Blockberry Creative Files to Block Chuu, Other Former LOONA Members from Entertainment Activities

Following Chuu’s expulsion and fellow now ex-LOONA members Kim Lip, Heejin, Jinsoul, and Choerry winning their contract termination lawsuits, Blockberry Creative (BBC) has opted to escalate issues further by petitioning the courts to have Chuu, Kim Lip, Heejin, Jinsoul, and Choerry barred from the entertainment industry.

The Korea Entertainment Management Association (CEMA) revealed BBC filed a petition in December to have Chuu’s entertainment activities suspended. In their petition, BBC stated Chuu violated her contract by agreeing to a pre-contract with BY4M STUDIO in 2021.

CEMA also revealed BBC submitted a petition to force Kim Lip, Heejin, Jinsoul, and Choerry to also suspend their activities after the company lost the contract termination case the LOONA members filed.

In regards to the injunction against Chuu, the Reward and Punishment Committee of the Korea Entertainment Management Association requested Chuu’s attendance at the hearing, to which Chuu’s legal representation agreed. Chuu’s attendance is needed to “confirm the facts regarding BBC’s claims and that they will investigate the case fairly.”

On her Instagram stories, Chuu posted in response to BBC’s petition.

Hello this is Chuu.

It’s really tiring and really sad that I have to keep releasing statements over these situations.

Recently, it seems that slanderous articles based on false reports have gone too far. In December 2021, I didn’t even know the company called BY4M that well. It is unbearable that they try to entangle not only me but also the [LOONA] members in lies, so I will sort out my position and respond soon.

Meanwhile, ORBIT (LOONA’s fandom) and the LOONA Union, a fan-led coalition, submitted a petition to provide LOONA with assistance during their ongoing legal struggles.

LOONA Union shared on Twitter their plan to submit a formal petition to assist LOONA members Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Gowon, and Olivia Hye with ending their exclusive contracts in any future trials. LOONA Union sought legal advice in their mission to file a petition.

Stay tuned for updates regarding the LOONA situation as this case continues to get messy. In the meantime, the only two members to not file a case against BBC, Vivi and Hyunjin, did an Instagram live with Chuu, which can be heard here.

Jersey Club 1

Gaining popularity thanks to her unique mic skills and her tracks based on hip-hop and R&B, rising young Japanese artist LANA released her single ‘PULL UP’ on November 30, 2022 – and now it is going viral on TikTok.

The track is based upon the Jersey Club genre, which is setting TikTok alight with a rush of dance videos from all around the world. Over the distinct rhythm style associated with that genre, the track’s melancholy melody is given a fresh finish with LANA’s iconic singing voice.

In December, right after the song was released, a wave of young Japanese “gyaru” (fashion-conscious young women) began posting videos of themselves dancing to the song on TikTok. By January, many popular female Japanese influencers had posted their own dance videos, igniting an unprecedented “gyaru x Jersey Club” dance trend, embraced by young Japanese women in their teens and twenties.

Now, on February 1, LANA has released her latest track, ‘TURN IT UP (feat. Candee & ZOT on the WAVE)’, featuring popular male Japanese rapper Candee and hit producer ZOT on the WAVE.

She was soon flooded with offers from both within Japan and overseas, and began producing music as a trackmaker and rapper, while also featuring on tracks by other artists. While her music is based on hip-hop and R&B, she has a sense for melody that transcends boundaries and genres, as well as an unforgettable husky voice, making her one of the scene’s most promising newcomers.

TV Shows 1

tvN presents ‘Seojin’s’, a spin-off of the variety show ‘Youn’s Kitchen’, which runs a Korean restaurant overseas.

Actor Lee Seo-jin runs a snack bar with ‘Youn’s Kitchen’ members Jung Yu-mi and Park Seo-joon. Instead of Yoon Yeo-jung, who was in charge of the kitchen at ‘Youn’s Kitchen’, ‘World Star’ V joined and is receiving great attention. In addition, Choi Woo-sik, who is well-known abroad for director Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’, is active as a new member.

In the teaser video, ‘Seojin’s’ sells gimbap, ramen, tteokbokki, and hot dogs. It plans to captivate the taste buds of locals with lighter menus than ‘Youn’s Kitchen’, which sold traditional Korean food such as bulgogi and bibimbap.

The producers of ‘Seojin’s’ said, “The idea is to introduce Korean culture rather than Korean food.” I express my impressions and thoughts about Korean food,” he said. “‘Seojin’s’ has a management philosophy that prioritizes profits. It would be fun to find out what has changed from ‘Youn’s Kitchen’,” he said. You can feel the charm,” he hinted.

There were often entertainment shows that showcased Korean food abroad in the past, but it was disappointing when the pulse was cut off for a while due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘Youn’s Kitchen 1, 2’ (2017, 2018), ‘Pocha Without Borders’ (2018-2019), ‘Will it be eaten locally? – China/US Edition’ (2018, 2019), etc were praised for raising the liking for it.
‘Seojin’ will open on February 24th at 8:50 pm.

According to the broadcasters on the 1st, JTBC will show ‘Korean food plate’ in March, where chef Lee Yeon-bok makes Korean food, and tvN will show ‘Seojin’s’ on the 24th of this month, where V, a member of the group BTS, works as an employee at a snack bar.

‘Korean Food Plate’ is a program that provides meals made of Korean food to places in the world that need meals, such as prestigious overseas schools, global companies, and professional sports clubs.

Chef Lee Yeon-bok, broadcaster Hong Jin-kyung who runs the kimchi business, nutritionist Kim Min-ji, comedians Heo Kyung-hwan and Nam Chang-hee, and group Monsta X’s Jooheon appear as the meal service corps.

Song Joong-ki Announces Marriage, Impending Fatherhood 1

Actor Song Joong-ki announced his marriage to British actress Katy Louise Saunders!

Song, who is known for his roles in A Werewolf Boy (2012), Descendants of the Sun (2016), Vincenzo (2021), and Reborn Rich (2022), announced his marriage and Saunders’ pregnancy through a message shared on his fan café.

 Hello. This is Joong Ki.

Today, I am greeting you because I want to share a promise that is more happy and valuable to me than anything.

I have promised to continue life together with Katy Louise Saunders, who has been by my side supporting me and who I have spent valuable time with while cherishing each other.

She has a kind heart, and she has lived her life passionately. She is a sensible and amazing person to the point that I revere her.

Thanks to her, I am becoming a better person.

We naturally dreamed of creating a happy family together. We have put in much effort to keep each other’s promises, and we are sincerely thankful as a new life has come to us.

And today, based on our deep trust and love for each other, we are on our way back from registering our marriage to begin life as a married couple.

As we are now, the two of us will walk our days ahead beautifully while facing the same direction.

I sincerely thank all the fans who always cherish me no matter what.

Especially following the wishes and support of Ki Aile who provide the greatest strength to me throughout my acting career, I will work to fly higher as an actor and individual with the wings of greater responsibility and passion.

I hope everyone will be happy and healthy until the day I can greet you in person.

On December 26 2022, Song’s agency, HighZium Studio, confirmed he was in a relationship. News began buzzing he was with someone after he thanked “Katy” during the 2022 APAN StarAwards. At the time, the media reported Song’s girlfriend was a “non-celebrity.”

Saunders reportedly retired from acting after the 2018 movie Welcome Home. Saunders is rumored to have a daughter from a previous relationship.

This is the second marriage for Song. From 2017-2019, he was married to his Descendants of the Sun co-star Song Hye-kyo.

Congratulations to the couple on their marriage on upcoming child!

Agency Roulette 1

Over the weekend, three K-Pop artists and an actor made agency moves.

Agency Roulette 2

Following a week of rumors, it has finally been confirmed that Dawn has signed with the Groovyroom-created company AT AREA.

Dawn, who was previously signed to P Nation and Cube Entertainment, hinted that he signed with a new company on January 26 when he posted  “New place, new music coming soon” on Instagram.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DAWN (@hyojong_1994)

On January 30, Dawn said, “I’m looking forward to working with AT AREA and GroovyRoom. I feel reassured knowing that they share a view on music with me. Please look forward to the new music I’ll be releasing.”

AT AREA stated, “We are delighted to be able to introduce Dawn as our first new member of the family in 2023. Dawn is an artist who we have always admired. We will actively support him so that he can fully demonstrate his potential as an artist and quench his thirst for music.”

Agency Roulette 3

Kim Chungha is rumored to be departing MNH Entertainment when her contract expires in March. According to AllKPop, the departure will be a mutually exclusive decision.

Chungha has been critical of MNH in the past and has joked about wanting to leave. She’s commented about issues regarding the delays surrounding Bare and Rare Pt. 2 among other problems. MNH has also struggled to promote her and their other artists properly, with BVNDIT disbanding in late 2022.

The company, who is also home to Vvon and Lim Sang Hyun, debuted their male idol group 8TURN January 30.

Meanwhile, Chungha is one of the artists slated to perform at the MIK (Made in Korea) Festival February 18-19, 2023 at  Accor Arena in Paris, France. Other performers include CL, BtoB, KARD, Cherry Bullet, Pentagon, Kid Milli, and Giriboy among others.

Agency Roulette 4

After parting ways with Blossom Entertainment in December, actor Park Bo Gum finally found a new home!

On January 30, The Black Label announced Park joined the agency.

“We have signed a management contract with Park Bo Gum, who is one of South Korea’s leading actors and who has been receiving the love and trust of the general public while switching back and forth between the small and silver screens,” The Black Label said.

The label added, “We are extremely delighted to be able to work together with actor Park Bo Gum, whose global influence extends beyond Korea. As actor Park Bo Gum has a wide variety of charms and talents, we will maximize our use of THEBLACKLABEL’s strengths and know-how so that he can deepen his charms in many different fields, including as an actor. We will go all out in our support [of Park Bo Gum] all over the world.”

Park was signed to Blossom Entertainment for 10 years. During his time with the agency, Park had roles in Runway Cop (2012), Reply 1988 (2015-16), Love in the Moonlight (2016), and Record of Youth (2020) among others. The multi-award-winning actor is set to have roles in 2023’s You Have Done Well and Wonderland.

The Black Label is home to Taeyang (BIGBANG), Zion.T, and Jeon So Mi.

Agency Roulette 5

Yezi, who has made her name as a solid singer and rapper since Fiestar’s disbandment, left JG Star, a company she’s been with for three years. Yezi’s contract with the company expired, and she’s currently shopping around for a new agency.

While signed with JG Star, Yezi released a string of underrated bops including “Home,” “My Gravity,” “Raining All Night,” and “Acacio.”

Momoland Members Depart MLD Entertainment Image

Momoland appears to have disbanded as all six of the remaining members opted to not renew their contracts with MLD Entertainment.

MLD Entertainment released a statement confirming the news.

Hello, this is MLD Entertainment.

First of all, we sincerely thank the fans who cherish and support MOMOLAND.

After a lengthy discussion with MOMOLAND (Hyebin, Jane, Nayun, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy), we respected each other’s opinions and agreed to terminate the exclusive contract upon expiration of the contract period.

We express our deep gratitude to MOMOLAND who has been with us for a long time, and we will sincerely wish the best for the members’ future endeavors.

We would like to ask fans to show unchanging love and support to the six members who are about to start anew.

Thank you.

Momoland debuted in 2016 through the reality series Finding Momoland. When they debuted, Momoland was a seven-member group consisting of Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Jane, Nayun, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy. Daisy and Taeha joined the group in 2017, making Momoland nine members. In 2019, Taeha and Yeonwoo departed the group and the agency with Daisy following in 2020 (in 2022, Daisy claimed she was “fired” from the group).

Daisy’s departure included a legal battle for unpaid wages as well as claims that Finding Momoland was rigged. Daisy ultimately won her lawsuit against the company.

Momoland had a lot of potential but lacked clear direction thanks to MLD Entertainment not knowing what to do with them. In 2018 and 2019, Momoland had two of K-Pop’s biggest songs with “Bboom Bboom” and “Baam,” but after that, album sales and music releases declined. Momoland’s last EP was Starry Night in June 2020, and their last single album was Ready or Not in November 2020. In 2022, the group released “Yummy Yummy Love” with Natti Natasha, but it was an English single.

It is not clear if Momoland will resign as a group with another agency or if they will go their separate ways and focus on their individual activities. In the meantime, Momoland is considered disbanded. Good luck to the members on their futures!

Singer Sam Kim’s Father Killed in Armed Robbery Image

On January 13, 2023, an armed robbery at Rainier Teriyaki, located on the corner of Rainer Avenue South and Walden Street in Seattle, Washington, ended in tragedy as the three suspects in the robbery shot a man inside the restaurant. The man, who had a gunshot wound to the chest, was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

On January 25, Korean media outlets identified the deceased as Hansoo Kim, the father of Korean singer Sam Kim.

Rainier Teriyaki was Hansoo Kim’s family restaurant according to the Seattle Times. The Seattle Times elaborates that Kim was the restaurant’s co-owner.

According to the family’s GoFundMe, Kim “loved being outside in nature and would spend his few days off during the year hiking with his wife and friends. More than anything, he loved his family deeply and would go to great lengths to set them up for success and cheer them on. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, uncle, friend, church member, and local restaurant owner who was always willing to lend a hand and support those around him in whatever way he could.”

Kim’s funeral was held January 24, which had over 200 people in attendance. Sam Kim performed “Don’t Worry,” a song he originally wrote for his mom, during the service.

Hansoo Kim is survived by his wife and three children: Sam, Sujin, and Juyoung.

Rainier Teriyaki is currently closed. The Kim family’s GoFundMe is asking for donations to “go towards any funeral or memorial costs, college tuition for the kids, and helping the family stay afloat financially as the restaurant was their primary source of income.”

In a tweet, Metropolitan King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay said, “Let’s wrap his family in love & resources and let’s double down on the work to end gun violence especially in the South End.”

Please support the loved ones of Hansoo Kim, our neighbor, who was shot and killed at his restaurant Rainier Teriyaki this weekend. Let’s wrap his family in love & resources and let’s double down on the work to end gun violence especially in the South Endhttps://t.co/QN0p0XoBPc

— Girmay Zahilay (@GirmayZahilay) January 18, 2023

No arrests have been made in Hansoo Kim’s murder. Seattle police are asking for the public’s help in catching those responsible. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.

GWSN Win Lawsuit Against The Wave Music Image

Female idol group GWSN (Girls in the Park), who has been inactive since May 2021, won their lawsuit to have their exclusive contracts with The Wave Music terminated. The announcement came January 22, 2023, but the verdict was announced by the Seoul Central District Court January 12.

According to Asian Junkie, The Wave Music did not respond to GWSN’s lawsuit or appear in court, so the seven-member group won by default. If The Wave Music does not appeal Judge Yoon Do Geun’s ruling, the ruling will become final.

Despite there not being any prior news alluding to their being a lawsuit, the news wasn’t a surprise to fans of the girl group. Back in February 2022, #SaveGWSN trended on social media as fans demanded better treatment for the girls. However, it appears fans weren’t aware of how bad things supposedly were for GWSN.

In their lawsuit, GWSN pointed out the severe mistreatment they allegedly experienced while with The Wave Music. They joined the company in 2021 after their original label, Kiwi Media Group, went under in 2020. Since being with The Wave Music, in exception of The Other Side of the Moon and “Like It Hot” in 2021, GWSN’s promotions decreased and eventually stopped.

The lawsuit states “The agency neglected care for [the members] since the last album promotion in June 2021, making it impossible for [them] to continue working in the entertainment business.”

Along with lacking promotions, GWSN members were not paid, and The Wave Music could not provide adequate records to show the members were provided fair wages.

“Management of the signed artists is one of the most primary duties of The Wave Music as outlined by the exclusive contracts,” GWSN’s lawyers said. “The failure to care for the members—as well as the failure to provide transparent records of finances have damaged the trust between The Wave Music and the GWSN members. Hence, the contracts can no longer be held valid.”

In February 2022, GWSN members were also evicted from their dorms when The Wave Music stopped paying rent. The company also got rid of the dance practice studio and released GWSN’s administrators, producers, and managers. Members Soso and Miya, who are from Taiwan and Japan respectively, also have criminal records and had to pay fines for overstaying their visas. The Wave Entertainment failed to take care of Soso and Miya’s immigrant statuses leading to their penalties.

The Wave Music only has until January 26 to appeal the ruling according to Pinkvilla. If The Wave Music does not respond, GWSN’s contracts will be nullified, and the group is free to promote and sign with a different company if they choose.

Soseo

Singer-songwriter Soseo freely expresses emotions that many people can relate to through music. In the past, while working as a model under the name of ‘SHUUU’, she prepared an album and released her debut song ‘Candy’ in May 2021, and has been steadily performing music activities. On December 29, 2022, a new single ‘EX’ was announced.

1. As soon as I listened to Ex, I felt so hurt. It’s been a long time since I felt like crying while listening to a song these days. Did you write and compose this song yourself? Have you ever cried while making or singing this song?

I am so happy and grateful to hear that you emotionally sympathized with the song <Ex>. I composed the lyrics and the top line of the melody, and producer KIME, who is always with me, worked on the arrangement of the tracks. This song is filled with a lot of emotional appeal, so I always felt like crying when I listened to it as well as when I recorded it. I didn’t actually cry out, but I do remember the tears welled up in my eyes.

2. The lyrics are so honest and straight, I like it. Do you tend to write lyrics based on your experiences?

I write a lot of honest and intuitive lyrics, maybe because I’m influenced by my own character. Autobiographical stories + Movies, animations, music, books, etc… I tend to build up inspiration from everything I see and hear.

3. You’re already best for me> has the vibe of old R&B songs, so it’s like a 90’s R&B mix that’s trending on YouTube these days. Did you purposely try this remix style? Do you enjoy remixing songs of these days with an old school vibe?

I didn’t actually plan it, but rather it’s because I grew up listening to 90s, 2000s R&B, K-pop, and pop songs since I was little, so they say that the songs I’ve made are somehow filled with the sensibility of those days. It’s amazing to hear that it’s trendy, as I just made something I like. I posted Jennie’s solo 80s remix cover on SoundCloud 5 years ago, and now when I listen to it, it’s a little embarrassing🥺

4. I heard that you were influenced by R&B in the 90s and 2000s. If you specify the golden age of music in your opinion, when would it be? How did you fall in love with the songs of this era?

I think people are most influenced by the music they listened to when they were little. The heyday of music in my personal standard is from the 90s to the early/mid-2000s, as I grew up listening to the music of that time when I was little!

Influenced by my mother and cousin brother, I was exposed to popular music since I was a baby, and I began to actively search for and listen to music from around the age of 7, and sang pop music from the age of 11. I remember singing Mariah Carey’s ‘My All’, Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ and Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Because Of You’.’ Haha

5. Your voice and singing style is clear and soft. Do you often go to singing rooms?

Thank you! I don’t go to singing rooms these days. When I was in the 6th grade of elementary school, I went to singing rooms four times a week.

6. Tell us your favorite singers and songs both in Korea and abroad.

There are so many artists I love, so it’s hard to decide.
Korean Singer: IU, Naul
Song: ‘You, In The Same Time With Me’ by Naul
Abroad Singer: Ariana Grande
Song: ‘Just The Way You Are’ by Billy Joel

7. What genre do you hate the most?

I listen to so many different genres, and there is no particular genre I don’t like!

8. Have you had any part-time job while in school? If so, what was it?

Well, I did make and served pizza at a wood-fired pizza house, worked at a PC room, convenience store and cafe, worked as a salesperson at a department store salesperson, as a kitchen assistant at an izakaya… These immediately came to mind. I think Kitchen assistant was the best fit for me. You don’t have to talk, and it was fun to prepare ingredients and cook.

9. Which dance choreography have you recently learned?

I haven’t learned any choreography, but I’ve done a cover dance of New Jeans ‘ OMG’.

10. Is there anything as a child you wished you had that does or does not matter now?

When I was little, I wanted to have a big dollhouse. I still want it now. When I earn a lot of money later, I want to have a secret playroom filled with things I like, such as dolls, toys, and games. I will pass it on to my children.

11. What’s your favorite liquor and how much can you drink?

I am literally an ‘alcoholic trash’, which means someone of alcohol intolerance and is called ‘Als’ in Korea. I get completely drunk by only 4 small cups of soju. I’ve once been taken to 119 after drinking in the past.  I don’t drink alcohol at all.

12. Do you usually stay at home during your break time or do you like to go out and hang out with others?

I like staying at home. I like shopping, cooking at home, walking nearby, and going to cafes.

13. Where is your favorite travel destination, where do you most want to go?

I want to go to Bali. I want to jump in for a swim as soon as I wake up at an accommodation with the sea right in front of me.

14. What is your dating style?

I like a relationship where I feel comfortable and have a deep bond as that of a best friend or family. I tend to act cute and lovely when I’m with the person I love.

Soseo 2

15. Falling in love and dating can be different. If you had to choose between dating and love?

You have to fall in love to be able to date someone. I tend to pursue a serious relationship, so dating is possible only when I can imagine a future together with that person!

16. Please say a word to your KCrush fans?

Atsushi Okada

It’s a mystery to behold when one’s wildest dreams come true. And this has been the case with Atsushi Okada, when his photography pursuit led him into the fairy island of Yururi-the phantom island inhabited by wild horses. In an interview with KCrush America Magazine, Atsushi Okada unwinds about his photography journey, his works, and fortunate opportunity of revealing the enchanted sanctuary, Yururi island, to the world through photo stories.

People only know you as Atsushi Okada, the photographer. But who really is Atsushi Okada?

People around me say that I am a quiet man. However, despite having been alive for nearly 40 years, I am still not sure what kind of person I really am. I guess you could say I keep taking pictures because I don’t really know myself. Photography is a way for me to understand myself and the world I live in.

How did you get into photography and what is photography to you?

I have loved drawing pictures since I was a child. I always felt comfortable spending time alone creating something. Eventually, that moved from drawing to photography. However, it doesn’t feel like I am doing something completely different. I guess photography became more compatible with my way of expression. People stop drawing in as they grow up. However, I still like the times when I can forget myself in the face of a blank piece of paper, just as I did back then. That has now changed to “photographs” instead of “paper and pencil”.

Your first work, the “I am” book, credited you the most prestigious national award, the Kimura Ihei Award. What’s the inspiration behind the book?

“I am” is a work I made in my mid-twenties. The photo book contains portraits of many young Japanese people – mainly female nude photos. Among them, there is a woman who has marks on her arms from hurting herself. I wanted to confront the unique “desire for life” that young people have through the act of taking photographs while I was still in my twenties.

Yoruri Island is one of the most secluded islands owing to the media restrictions. How did you gain access to such a haven?

Yururi Island is an uninhabited island off the coast of Nemuro City in Hokkaido, the easternmost point of Japan’s mainland. Although it is a small island with a circumference of only about 8 km, the island is designated as a natural monument as a breeding ground for seabirds. As such, landing on the island is severely restricted.

I learned about the existence of Yururi Island around 2009. An editor I was close to in Tokyo told me that there is apparently an island at the eastern end of Japan where only horses live. But at the time, no one in Japan was aware of it. Even I, who was born in Hokkaido where Yururi Island is located and lived there until I was 19, did not know of its existence.

So, it was very difficult to get permission to go to the island, and there was very little information regarding it too. After two years of negotiations, I was able to cross over to the island for the first time in 2011. There is no port on the island, so we were taken by fishermen in a small fishing boat that could dock there.

What does the opportunity of showcasing the heritage of Yoruri Island mean to you as a photographer?

I will never forget the first time I visited the island of Yururi and saw a group of horses standing in an uninhabited grassland. It was as though I had stumbled across creatures from a myth passed down from generation to generation. Yururi Island was covered with such unbelievable sights.

The only man-made object on the island is a lighthouse. There is not a single road made for humans to walk on. Misty grasslands spread out before my eyes. Only horses lived quietly in this meadow where humans rarely set foot.

I decided to capture that beauty in my photographs. Rather than going just once, I wanted to visit the island over a long period of time, to photograph the horses that lived there. Yururi Island had only female horses, and so they were sure to go extinct one day. I wanted to keep the beautiful scenery and the horses alive in my photographs, even though they would inevitably disappear.

Before heading to Yoruri Island, did you expect there to be so much buzz from the works you were to produce; to the point that global fans would demand an English website?

It was something I had not imagined at all. When I first became interested in Yururi Island in 2009, there was almost no information available about it on the Internet. I did not expect that people from overseas would be interested in a small island that even Japanese people did not know about.

Given that you dedicated your photography life to showcasing the beauty of Yoruri Island, what’s your daily routine like?

I usually live in Tokyo. I only go to Yururi Island for photography a few times a year. However, since I have been visiting the island for more than 10 years, I have accumulated a huge number of photos and videos up until now. I spend my days thinking about what I can do to ensure that they will not just end up being consumed and forgotten, but will continue to exist in this world 10 or 50 years from now. Perhaps it is because I live in Tokyo – a city surrounded by skyscrapers – that I so frequently think about the sight of those horses, standing in a meadow, on a small island on the edge of the world.

KCrush Interview With Atsushi Okada Image 1

The island’s real image has remained a mystery to the world for the longest. You have had an experience of over 10 years in Yoruri Island, and have documented about it including in the The Reason Why Yururi is a “Lost Island” chapter of the Yururi Island Website. How would you describe it in few words for us who only see it in pictures?

I am currently being interviewed about Yururi Island, but I do not know at this moment if the horses are even still on that island. It is unknowable. That is why I think its existence is precious and beautiful. And I do not even know if what I consider beautiful still exists in this world. So, I guess we could call it almost “Lost island”. The beauty of Yururi Island is not as simple as “horses on an uninhabited island”.

Yoruri Island is often described as “an island inhabited only by horses”. Having lived and travelled around the island for over a decade, would you attest to this saying still today?

We cannot prove that. Because at this moment, I cannot verify that there even is a horse on the island. That’s why sometimes I wonder if this is just one long dream. The island known as Yururi may very well be real, but whether the horses and the scenes I found so beautiful really exist at all…

To me, Yururi Island is a very sacred place. I think of it as a kind of sanctuary in the small port town of Nemuro, where Yururi Island is located. Therefore, I consider it to be an island that humans should not easily be able to set foot on. Myself included, of course. That’s why, from now on, I will not go there without a reason. The beauty of Yururi Island is so delicate that it would be destroyed immediately if humans were to set foot on it so easily.

Next year, the website; where you document interesting information about Yoruri Island coupled with photographs, is set to be published alongside an exhibition at the public art museum. How does that make you feel after dedicating your life on a secluded island for over 10 years and what would you tell us about this incoming book?

The book on Yururi Island will be published in the spring of 2023. It will be very important in my life because it is proof that the world I saw existed. If it does not exist as a book, the story I am telling now about Yururi Island may be no different than the dream I had yesterday.

In the summer, I will hold an exhibition of Yururi Island at an art museum in Hokkaido. I think it is very important to talk about Yururi Island within the framework of “art”. Because 10 years from now, there may be no more horses on the island. In fact, they may already be gone. But even so, every time my work is exhibited in a museum, people will remember the island and talk about the horses that were there. I believe that the horses of Yururi Island will live on through my works, not to be forgotten, but to be passed on.

Some of the works you have created since ensuing the Yoruri Island photography include “MOTHER” in 2014 and “Shota Yasuda Photo Collection: LIFE IS” in 2020. The artwork is also in the public collection of museums such as Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art. Were these works influenced by your stay in Yoruri Island?

Visiting Yururi Island from Tokyo has had a big impact on my life. All of my works have influenced me in the same way. So, to some extent, I think all of my works have influenced each other.

My photo book “MOTHER” was published in 2014, but I shot this work around 2008. “MOTHER” is a work that vividly follows the process of one woman’s childbirth. My desire to capture the moment a human is born was influenced by the publication of my photo book “I am” the year before, in 2007.

Mr. Yasuda, photographed in “Shota Yasuda Photo Collection: LIFE IS (2020)”, is a famous idol in Japan. He is also a member of the most popular idol group in Japan, known as “Kanjani Eight”. He has told me that he has liked my work for more than 10 years, which led me to shoot his photo book. Rather than the photo book of an idol, we worked together to produce it as a work of art. Mr. Yasuda is a very sensitive and kind-hearted person.

MOTHER

“THE WORLD” work is quite artistic. What was the inspiration behind it?

In the works I have presented so far, the subject may seem different depending on the piece. But in my mind, everything is connected. In this sense, I would say that “THE WORLD” connects each of my pieces in an easy-to-understand way. In “THE WORLD”, stories of childbirth, self-harm, and the earthquake that hit Japan in 2011 are all told through the same medium of photographs. The title of the work does not mean “my world”. I tried to perceive this “world” in which “I” live, through the act of taking photographs.

THE WORLD

When not doing photography, what do you like doing to rejuvenate?

This is a difficult question. I don’t think of creating my work as a job. Therefore, there is no ON and OFF for me that separates when I’m working and when I’m not working. I guess since I am not able to switch between them easily, I never really stop creating something. If I had to choose something, then the time I spend late at night drinking and thinking about the work I am currently making is probably the most rejuvenating time for me.

What do you hope to achieve through Yoruri Island documentaries?

I have no desire to achieve anything. I did not start taking pictures of Yururi Island because I was asked to do so for work. So, I did not go to the island for money or to make a living. Rather, it’s something I personally have spent a huge amount of time, energy, and money on.

If someone asks me “what is the purpose of taking pictures of Yururi?”, I would not be able to explain it in a simple way. I don’t think it’s something other people will understand.

I don’t know what will happen to Yururi Island in the future. I don’t know if there will still be horses on the island in 10 years, or if they are already gone. So, I think leaving this piece behind is the only thing I can do.

What are your future plans as a photographer, with regards to your personal works and Yoruri Island?

I am currently preparing for a book on Yururi Island to be published this spring and an exhibition to be held at a museum in Japan this summer. I can’t imagine what will happen beyond that. I don’t even know when I will next visit the island.

But back in 2011, when I first traveled to Yururi Island, I never imagined that 10 years later the American media would be asking me about it. In the same way, there may come another time in the future that I never would have even imagined would happen. For example, in a few years, there might be an exhibition of Yururi Island in an American museum. I look forward to such a future.

Thank you for asking about Yururi Island. I am glad that people in the US know about this small island in a corner of Japan.

K Pop Fan Essentials Image 1

Essentials constitute of intrinsic elements that are fundamental in various aspects and purposes. K-Pop essentials for fans showcase the fandoms’ unwavering support towards their bias idols. K Pop Fan Essentials Image 2

1. Photoalbum

With the evolution in technology, physical CDs have become a thing of the past, although not for K-Pop fans. Nonetheless, the latest album version that is highly essential for any K-Pop fan is the photoalbum. Just as a CD is filled with an artist or group’s music, a photoalbum on the other hand is a collection of collectables related to the artist or group. The collectables include a photo book, t-shirt, and photocards among others. The photoalbum has become a trend and is being done in various editions (limited, deluxe, standard, etc.) and volumes (vol.1, vol.12, etc.). A photoalbum is a K-Pop fan’s way of expressing their undying love for their bias artist or group.

2. Photocards

Compared to the photoalbums, photocards are smaller and easier to carry around. Photocards usually come in the size of trading cards, are part of the photoalbum, and are always found in K-Pop events and concerts. These collectables are more treasured in the case of K-Pop groups since each photocard is dedicated to each of the band’s members. As such, photocards enables a fan to have his or her bias K-Pop icon all in one photo rather than all group members in one photo.

4. Wearables

A fan is never complete without securing a wearable whose content is dedicated to his or her favorite idol, including the idol’s face, their motto or lyrics among others. The most common wearables are t-shirts with the most treasured ones being those part of a K-pop group’s photoalbum edition. In addition to clothing, some agencies such as SM Entertainment go a step further and give fans the option of having wearables in form of jewelry. As such, the agency releases editions of jewelry, such as bracelets, representing each of their K-Pop groups and artists. This has become quite a trend since unlike the clothing wearables, most of the jewelry can be worn anywhere and on any day giving the fans more freedom to express their support towards their bias K-Pop idols and groups.
