PyeongChang Olympic Moments: East and South Asians, Pacific Islanders Make History, Have Defining Moments at the XXIII Olympiad

Between February 8 and February 25, 2018, the world came together to watch the world’s best compete in the XXIII OlympiadĀ in PyeongChang, South Korea. From curling to skiing, figure skating to aerials, there was plenty of sport to see. South Korea held one of the most memorable Winter Olympics in recent memory, and it was a history-making event. Here are some of the defining moments from the games’ Asian athletes and athletes of Asian descent as we celebrate the closing of the games.

Redemption: Nathan Chen’s History-Making Free Skate

Olympics 1

Nathan Chen wraps up his free skate at the PyeongChang Olympic Games February 17, 2018. Photo courtesy Vanity Fair.

Since 2017, the media pegged Nathan Chen as America’s hope for figure skating gold. The Quad King, as Chen has been dubbed thanks to his ability to perform the quadruple jumps, had uncharacteristically bad performances during the team figure skating event and during his short program in the individual round. Following his short program, Chen landed in 17thĀ position and did not start in the top group on February 17’s free program.

The 18-year-old threw his cards down during his ā€œMao’s Last Dancerā€ performance, attempting six quads and landing five of them cleanly to become the first skater to do so on the Olympic stage. Chen’s score of 215.08 ranked him first in the competition for more than two hours before China’s Jin Boyang toppled the score.

Following his skate, Chen said, “I have been working on it for a while. It’s never really fully come together. I already fell so many times, I was like, ‘I already fell so many times [earlier in competition], I might as well go out and throw everything down and see what happens.’ ”

Chen ultimately ended up fifth, but his score places him third on the all-time list of best free skates behind Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu and Spain’s Javier Fernandez. Chen won the free skate portion of the event.

ā€œHonestly, I just didn’t care anymore,ā€ Chen said following the free skate. ā€œI was like, ā€˜all right, screw it.ā€™ā€

Following the event, American ice dancer and 2014 Olympic gold medalist, Meryl Davis, said, ā€œChen reminds athletes everywhere that giving up is never an option. As an athlete myself, I’m grateful for the reminder that you have neither to be perfect nor must you win in order to possess the qualities of a champion.ā€

Olympics 2Mirai Nagasu’s Historic Triple Axel

Four years after being left offĀ the US Olympic team, Mirai Nagasu found herself back into the Olympic spotlight following years of training and hard work.

Nagasu, who is in prime condition and an inspiration to many thanks to her perseverance, skated the long program for the team figure skating event held on February 11 and 12 at the Gangneung Ice Arena. Nagasu had a planned triple axelĀ in her program, a jump that only Midori Ito and Mao Asada have landed in Olympic competition. Nagasu attempted—and cleanly landed—the jump early in her program, making her the first American woman to land the jump in Olympic competition, and the second American woman to land it in any international competition after Tonya Harding.*

Korean Unified Team Now Part of the Hockey Hall of Fame

Olympics 3 1024x658

The leading story for the PyeongChang Olympics was North and South KoreaĀ competing under the unified flag during the women’s hockey tournament. While the Korean unified team had a dismal performance during the Olympics, the team did provide several moments worth cheering.

The unified team—which consisted of North Koreans, Korean-Americans, Canadian-Koreans, and South Koreans—had to overcome language barriers during their short time together (North and South Korea have different dialectsĀ and languages have evolved) as well the political ramifications that come with being a unified team in a time of political turmoil. Ā The two teams did not train together for long, leading coaches Sarah Murray (Canadian), Rebecca Baker (American), Kim Doyun (South Korean), and Pak Chol Ho (North Korean) to wonder if the team would mesh or branch off into cliques. However, despite the differences, the team worked together and showed guts and gusto despite their 0-4 record.

In addition to making history as a unified Korean team, the team’s first and only goal came against Japan February 14, 2018. The goal, which was scored by Randi Griffin, was Korea’s—for both men and women— first-ever Olympic-level goal scored. Prior to PyeongChang, Korea never had an Olympic hockey team.

Following the goal, officials took the puck. The puck will now be immortalized in Hockey Hall of FameĀ in Toronto, Canada.

Yun Sung-Bin Wins Gold, Korea’s First-Ever Sliding Medal

South Korea never medaled in a sliding sport (bobsled, luge, skeleton). This changed when 23-year-old Yun Sung-Bin, dubbed ā€œIron Manā€ thanks to his Ironman-themed helmet, took to the top of the slide at Alpensia Sliding Centre, and slid his way into skeleton history.

Not only did Yun earn his country’s first sliding medal, his three runs earned him gold ahead of Nikita Tregubov (Olympic Athlete from Russia) and Dominic Parsons (Great Britain) with a time of 3.20.55.

Malaysia’s Julian Yee Skates for Pride

Olympics 5

2018 marked the first time Malaysia had winter Olympians.

Figure skater Julian Yee qualified for an Olympic spotĀ by finishing sixth at the 2017 CS Nebelhorn Trophy competition. His feat is incredible considering his figure skating training occurs at an ice rink inside a shopping mall.

Yee, who was also Malaysia’s flag-bearer during the Opening Ceremonies, performed a dazzling short program that showed his ability to become one of figure skating’s up-and-coming stars. While his skate didn’t have the technical difficulty as the likes of Nathan Chen, Shoma Uno, Jin Boyang, or Victor Zhou, Yee’s charm and determination wasn’t lost on the ice. While his goalĀ was to make it to the free skate, Yee’s score brought him just outside the top 24. However, his skate will hopefully open the door for other Malaysian dreamers who hope to make it to the Olympics someday.

Shiva Keshavan Competes in His Sixth Olympics

Olympics 6

Luger Shiva Keshavan has a story to tell: Not only is he India’s only luger, he is also ranked in the top 38 in the world in the sport. The 36-year-old finished 34thĀ in the competition, but the placement doesn’t take away from how he’s qualified for six consecutive Olympic games and has been supported through crowdfunding to make his Olympic dreams into reality. Keshavan is the first Indian to qualify for the winter Olympics, and since 2005, he’s a multi-time medalist at the Asian Luge Cup. PyeongChang is Keshavan’s final Olympics, and the decorated Olympian plans on recruiting new Indian talentĀ to compete in winter sports.

Tonga’s Pita Taufatofua Inspires

Olympics 7 1024x631The last time we saw Pita ā€œThe Shirtless Tonganā€ Taufatofua, he became Internet Famous as the glistening flag bearerĀ for Tonga during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Taufatofua competed in Taekwondo during the summer Olympics, but for PyeongChang, he competed as a cross country skier. He is Tonga’s first dual Olympian.

TaufatofuaĀ became one of the faces of the PyeongChang Olympics long before the games began. He trained in sand and water as his country doesn’t get snow. Taufatofua trained on wheeled skisĀ and clocked only four weeks of training timeĀ before his first race. Overall, he only had three months training.

“We found roller skis, I’d strap planks of wood to my feet and run on the beach, just to try and find that balance point,ā€ Taufatofua told CNN. ā€œI’d watch a lot of YouTube and see what the professionals were doing, and I’d try and mimic that mentally in my head.”

Taufatofua almost didn’t qualify for the Olympics due to a string of bad luck, lack of funding, and, most notably, the snowstorm in Iceland.

The final event prior to the Olympics was in ƍsafjƶrưur, Iceland, and getting to the event proved to be a challenge for him and his travel partners and fellow competitors, Chilean cross-country skier Yonathan FernandezĀ and Mexican endurance specialist German Madrazo. The trio tried for three days to make it to the final competition so they could qualify for the 2018 games.

“Luckily, on the third day we tried to get through, the roads had just been cleared so we managed to get on through and get to that last race,ā€ Taufatofua told CNN.

During his race February 16, 2018, Taufatofua came in 114thĀ place out of 119 skiers. He hopes his Olympic journey inspires other TongansĀ to get out there and strive for Olympic glory.

“It’s your turn next,” Taufatofua told NBC. “I had my turn. You guys got to come and take it to the next level. I finished. You guys come and finish better than I finish.”

Choi Min-Jeong Earns 1500-Meter Gold

Olympics 8

Choi Min-Jeong celebrates her 1500-meter race gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. Photo courtesy Ā BBC.

Americans first met South Korea’s Choi Min-Jeong during an NBC Olympics segment where she introduced us to her dog, Mini Potato. Since then, the Yonsai University freshman became an easy favorite to root for during her speed skating races.

Choi’s Olympic run started with some controversy during the 500-meter short track final. Choi initially won silver in the race but was disqualified after the referee determined she bumped into Canada’s Kim Boutin, even though there is video that shows Kim pushed Choi first.

However, this devastation didn’t stop Choi as her competitive spirit helped her win gold at the 1500-meter short track final. The determined Choi hung back the first few laps before strategically moving up and blowing the rest of the field away in a cleanly skated race. How’s that for triumph during your first Olympic games?

Hanyu Ties Dick Button’s Consecutive Gold Record

Olympics 9

Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu listens to the cheers following his short skate February 16, 2018 at the PyeongChang Olympics. Photo courtesy Daily Herald.

Before the rain of Winnie the PoohĀ dolls flooded the Gangneung Ice Arena, it was unclear if reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu would be competing at the PyeongChang games. Following an ankle injuryĀ that occurred during a training run prior to the NHK Trophy in November, Hanyu dropped out of the Figure Skating Grand Prix and Japanese Nationals. When the Opening Ceremonies began, Hanyu was nowhere to be found.

Prior to the men’s event, Hanyu did arrive at the Olympics, his security detail in tow and various fan clubs ready for his turn on the ice.

Hanyu turned a spectacular performance during his short program, earning a score that was shy of his world record. It was his first performance following his ankle injury, and he showed no hesitation as he catapulted to the top of the standings as Winnie the Pooh plush toys bounced around the arena. Following his near-flawless free skate, Hanyu cemented himself into figure skating history by collecting his second consecutive gold medal at the Olympic games. He ties the United States’ Dick Button who achieved this feat in 1948 and 1952.

Of Hanyu’s win, Dick Button tweeted,Ā ā€œBravo Hanyu, Records are made to be tieā€ (sic). If Hanyu plans to attempt a three-peat in 2022, we’ll be ready!

Yura Min, Alex Gamelin Bounce Back

Olympics 10

During the team event, South Korean ice dancers Yura MinĀ and Alex GamelinĀ had a solid, energy-filled short dance that delighted skating fans in the arena and watching on TV, but her unfortunate wardrobe malfunction was all the media could focus on following their program.

During the final moments of their program, Min’s top came undone and started to flap forward. Min and Gamelin fought through the mishap and the slight bobble the malfunction caused, but their score wasn’t enough to help their team make it to the team final.

During the individual event on February 19, 2018, Min’s outfit had some minor changes that made it more competition-ready. The duo earned a 61.22 for their short program and an opportunity to skate in the free program.

Vincent Zhou: His Time Is Now

Olympics 11

17-year-old Vincent Zhou became the first skater to land a quad lutz in Olympic figure skating history. Photo courtesy NBC Olympics.

17-year-old Vincent Zhou was often overshadowedĀ during the Olympics thanks to his American counterparts, Nathan Chen and Adam Rippon. However, Zhou quietly cemented himself as one of the United States’ future stars following his strong performances during the games.

While Chen is dubbed the Quad King, Zhou is the crowned prince. During his ā€œChasing Carsā€ short program, Zhou became the first skater to land a quad lutzĀ at an Olympics. If that wasn’t enough, Zhou landed several other quads across his two performances, earning him a sixth-place finish in the men’s event.

Zhou’s demeanor on the ice exudes a quiet confidence, especially after his stunning ā€œMoulin Rougeā€ performance in the long program. Zhou, who isn’t even in the prime of his skating career, can only get better from here. Perhaps it’s better if the media and skating fans pay attention to his teammates? This will give Zhou a chance to take the skating world by storm.

Ryom, Kim Dazzle, Earn Medal Buzz for 2022 Beijing Olympics

Olympics 12 1024x450

Ryom Tae-ok and Kim Ju-sik earned praise and adoration following their Olympic performances. Photo courtesy Olympic.org.

North KoreanĀ pairs skaters Ryom Tae-okĀ and Kim Ju-sik generated plenty of buzz prior to their Olympic debut following a bronze medal performance at Four Continents. Kim, who towers over his petite partner Ryom, has a certain charm about him, while Ryom’s personality filled the arena the moment she took the ice. Pegged as one of the feel-good storiesĀ of the games, the pair were truly a delight to watch. Nerves didn’t seem to rattle the pair, especially as Kim spun Ryom in effortless death spirals, Ryom’s face relaxed and taking in the moment.

Prior to the Olympics, the pair had an opportunity to train in CanadaĀ to help refine their skating. Ryom and Kim trained alongside Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford during their time in Montreal.

Ryom and Kim performed well in their first Olympic competition, signaling the start of a promising career for the pair. The couple finished 11thĀ overall, but they earned personal best scores along the way while earning some much-deserved praise.

Already, analysts consider Ryom and Kim early favorites for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. If they continue to grow, it is quite possible this prediction could become a reality.

Michael Christian Martinez Skates Well on Short Notice

Olympics 13

The Philippines’ Michael Christian Martinez initially failed to qualify for the Olympics following the CS Nebelhorn Trophy in September 2017. Following the competition, Martinez retiredĀ from figure skating to become a body builder. As luck would have it, though, Martinez was given a last-minute spot for the Olympics when Sweden gave up a quota place. Martinez was notified of his Olympic chance on January 23, 2018: 16 days prior to the Olympics’ start!

Martinez, who also competed at the 2014 Sochi Olympic games, is the first skater from the Philippines to compete at the Olympics. He came in 28thĀ and was ineligible for the free skate. While many feel his ā€œEmerald Tigerā€ performance was severely underscored, Martinez’s story is still an inspiring storyĀ of luck and hard work.

Nao Kadaira Wins Japan’s First 500-meter Gold; Earns Olympic Record, Admiration

Olympics 14

In one of the top moments of the Olympics, Japan’s Nao Kodaira comforts South Korean’s Lee Sang-hwa following the 500-meter speed skating race. Nao denied Lee a third-straight win in the event. Photo courtesy Japan Today.

On February 18, 2018, Nao Kodaira, also known as the ā€œThe Angry Catā€Ā following her training in the Netherlands, ā€œ took to the ice and coasted to an Olympic-record time of 36.94, eclipsing the record set by South Korean Lee Sang-hwa. Lee, a favorite to win her third straight gold in the women’s 500-meter race, earned a silver medal, .39 seconds behind Nao. As Lee sobbed during the victory lap, Nao comforted her fellow racer in a show of solidarity between competitors and friends.

ā€œI really look up to her as a human being and a skater. She is my friend,ā€ Nao said of Lee.

With her win, Nao became the first Japanese speed skater to win a gold medal in the 500-meter race. Following her win, Nao dedicated her win to her friend, fellow speedskater, Miyako Sumiyoshi, who was found dead in her apartment a month earlier.

During a press conference, Nao said ā€œ[Sumiyoshi] has been in my thoughts so many times. Of course, I can’t forget about her. Even when I have tried not to think about her, she kept coming into my mind. But as captain of the Japanese delegation I knew I had to face my race with a focused state of mind.ā€

Nao said, “I don’t know whether it is okay for me to say this or not, but Sumiyoshi’s people told me before the Olympics that she had said to them if I get the gold it would be the same as her winning it. I actually won the gold medal, but I wanted to tell her about it in person, and it is such a shame that I am not able to do that.”

Nao also earned silverĀ in the 1000-meter final.

Noriaki Kasai Competes in His Eighth Olympics, Hopes to Compete in Two More

Olympics 15

Japan’s Noriaki KasaiĀ is unstoppable and seemingly immortal. The 45-year-old ski-jumper appeared in his eighth Olympics, showing that age is just a number if one still has the drive to continue in a sport he or she loves.

While Kasai didn’t have a successful Olympic run—he was eliminated in the first roundĀ of the Men’s Large Hill Jump on February 17, 2018—he was invited to jump in the team event.

While many feel this Olympics may be Kasai’s last time to fly, he hasn’t ruled out 2022 in Beijing or 2026 if Sapporo, Japan is selected as the host city.

Shib-Sibs First Ice Dancers of Asian-Descent to Earn Olympic Medal

Olympics 16 1024x682

American ice dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani skate into history with their bronze medal performance. Photo courtesy Time Magazine.

The United States’ Maia and Alex Shibutani have a lot to be proud of following their Olympics. The brother-sister ice dancers became the second siblings since 1992 (France’s IsabelleĀ and Paul Duchesnay) and the first ice dancers of Asian-descent to earn a medal at the Olympics.

Prior to the free skate, the Shib-SibsĀ were fourth, .02 points back of their American teammates, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donahue. The Shibutanis had a strong free skate that showcased their signature, dazzling twizzles and clean lifts that matched the rises and falls of their selected Coldplay soundtrack. With mistakes by Hubbell and Donahue and the Shibutani’s stunning performance, the duo rightfully earned a spot in Olympic history.

Brother-sister teams generally aren’t favored in the skating world, especially ice dancing where romance is an expectedĀ theme for programs. However, the Shib-Sibs have proven that romance isn’t required to be a winning team as their often fun, light-hearted programs have a sense of hope and wonderment that add a different edge to the typical skating tropes.

And while Asians and skaters of Asian-descent have medaled in pairs, ladies, and men’s events, ice dance was the one sport where an Asian athlete failed to podium. The Shibutani’s, hopefully, have opened the door.

ā€œWe worked really hard and we found our way and we did it.ā€ Alex Shibutani said. Ā ā€œHopefully other teams coming up after us, they’ll believe if they’re brother and sister, if they’re Asian.ā€

Choi Dabin Skates in Memory of Her Mother

Olympics 17

Choi Dabin wraps up a successful, emotional free skate to “Dr. Zhivago” at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic games. Photo courtesy Indian Express

South Korea’s Choi Dabin had an Olympics to remember. Following her elegant performances to ā€œPapa, Can You Hear Me?ā€ (Yentl) and ā€œDr. Zhivago,ā€ Choi finished eighth overall; her teammate, Kim Hanul, finished tenth. During her programs, Choi earned personal best scores of 67.77 (short program), 131.49 (free skate), and 199.26 (overall).

Olympic gold and silver medalist, Kim Yuna, told Yonhap News, ā€œI was worried whether the young athletes would be too nervous at home and at their first Olympics. [Kim and Choi’s] flawless performances were admirable. This experience will help them continue their athletic careers.ā€

Choi’s enduring smile and exquisite show of grace under pressure in her home country showed her strength, endearing her to skating fans at home and abroad, but this was just a Cliff noteĀ to her story. The 18-year-old lost her motherĀ June 26, 2017 following a long battle with cancer. Ā In the weeks following her mother’s passing, Choi skated in the Olympic qualifier, placed in the top ten, and earned South Korea two spots for the Olympics.

Choi said of the qualifier, “I thought about pulling out of this event, but I felt like I’d have regrets if I didn’t skate here.”

Choi states a lot of her Olympic success is due to feeling her mother’s presence with her on the ice.

ā€œI am very thankful to my mother, who is watching me from Heaven,ā€ Choi said. ā€œSkating in the Olympics was my dream and also my mom’s.ā€ She later added, ā€œIf she were here, she would have given me a warm hug.ā€

Shaolin SƔndor Liu Helps Hungary Speed into Olympic History

Olympics 18

Hungary won their first-ever Winter Olympics gold in PyeongChang, thanks to Shaolin SĆ”ndor Liu’s stunning performance in the men’s short track 5,000-meter relay. Liu, along with his brother, Shaoang Liu, and teammates Viktor Knoch and Csaba Burjan stunned Canada, China, and Korea by taking the gold medal. Liu’s last lap helped to push the team ahead to secure an Olympic-record time of 6 minutes 31.971 seconds.

Liu said, ā€œIt’s such a big honor. The journey was really long to get here. The team qualified for the Olympics in eighth position, the last position, and we made it count.ā€

The win was also Hungary’s first Winter Olympics medal since 1980 when Krisztina Regƶczy and AndrĆ”s SallayĀ won silver in ice dancing.

ā€œGarlic Girlsā€ Take Country, World by Storm

Olympics 19

Curling is often the butt of jokes, but the sport has gained a lot of traction during the 2018 Olympic Games. Part of the increased interest is due to the meme-worthyĀ South Korean women’s curling team.

The ā€œGarlic Girls,ā€ nicknamed such as four of the five girls hail from the garlic-producing locale of UiseongĀ in the Gyeongsangbuk-do province, have earned Internet fame thanks to their nicknames, charisma, and skip (leader) Kim Eun-Jung’s game face. The girls—Kim Cho-Chee (ā€œChochoā€), Kim, Eun-Jung (ā€œAnnieā€), Kim Seon-Yeong (ā€œSunnyā€), and sisters Kim Yeong-Mi (ā€œPancakeā€) and Kim Kyong-Ae (ā€œSteakā€)— chose their nicknames based on their favorite breakfast foods to practice their English and help others identify them during the competition. The names and the girls’ personalities have been worked into fanart and memes, making them overnight sensations.

Their silver medal comes as a surprise because the team was not expected to do well given how young South Korea is in the sport. Ā In Olympic competition, this is only South Korea’s second appearance.

ā€œCabbage Patch Kidā€ Lee Sang-Ho Grabs Men’s Parallel Giant Slalom Silver

Olympics 20

South Korea’s Lee Sang-Ho didn’t learn how to snowboard like many of the big-name snowboarders: He learned how to snowboard in a cabbage patch, thus his nickname.

Lee allegedly edged out Slovenia’s Zan KosirĀ by :01 seconds (photo evidence does show otherwise) to advance to the big final where he lost to Switzerland’s Nevin Galmarini. However, his finish is Asia’s first-ever Olympic alpine snowboarding podium finish, and South Korea’s first ever winter Olympics medalĀ in a skiing event.

Takagi, Lee Take Gold in First-Ever Speedskating Mass Start Event

Olympics 21

The first speedskating mass start event was held on the final weekend of the PyeongChang games. Japan’s Nana TagachiĀ won gold in the women’sĀ mass start, while South Korea’s Lee Seung-Hoon took it for the men’s event. Korea also won silver in the women’s event thanks to world champion Kim Bo-Reum.

The mass start event has been trialed at the junior Olympics and different competitions leading up to the Olympics. The event has been dubbed as the ā€œNASCAR of speedskatingā€ due to its speed, crashes, and passing/sprint/point set up.

TO OUR KCRUSH COMMUNITY AND FRIENDS

Join us in our attempt to bring more awareness to an “international” problem called Suicide and Mental Health.

KCRUSH America will be walking in and assisting with the “Out Of The Darkness-Overnight Walks” in Dallas on June 2, 2018, and are seeking volunteers to walk with us on that day. The same walk will take place in Philadelphia on June 16, 2018. If anyone would like to participate in Philadelphia as well, we can put together a team there too, but there must be at least 10 volunteers.

As you are aware the K-pop world lost one of its greatest shinning stars, SHINee’s Kim Jong-hyun in December 2017, and we are aware that there have been others known and unknown in the past and even recently, thus we want to become involved in this cause to help prevent anymore suicides in the future, “Internationally!”

We decided to make this a team effort and to not just donate to the cause alone. It is more exciting and heart-felt to have our followers participate with us for something special like this.

If you would like to walk with KCRUSH in the name of Yourself, Jonghyun and others known and unknown, visit the following website and learn more about the walk, http://bit.ly/JoinOurTeamWalk and www.theovernight.org. If you decide it is for you and believe that you can help raise funds for such a worthy cause and that it might be helpful to you, go ahead and email us at events@kcrush.com OR provide your information in the pop-up form on the kcrush.com website. You will be contacted. We do not have a team cut-off count, but we seek a minimum of 10 volunteers to walk with us and to help raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Thank you, let’s have fun and make this count.

This WednesdayĀ only series will provide English subtitles on select videos. We hope you will enjoy.

Vietnamese women are renowned for their beauty and their poise and many of their beauty tips and tricks have been passed down, not just for generations, but for thousands of years. Vietnamese women also take their beauty routines very seriously. They tend to take very good care of their skin so that they can achieve their natural looking beauty and their flawless skin without using a lot of make up. If you want to find out how do they do that please go through these beauty secretsĀ following.

1. Never Ā forget to wash their faces twice everyday.

You might think this is not a secret at all becasue everyone knows about it. However, if you live in Vietnam where the weather is totally hot and humid in the summer which can make your skin very oily and easy to get acnes or you can get super dry in the winter which causes so much more problem with your skin, you might want to find yourself a facial cleanser that help you avoid all the bad issues that I’ve just mentioned.

There are hundreds of facial cleansers in Vietnam but people are interested in using big brand names like Pond’s, Cetaphil,Clean&clear,ceraVe,innisfree..etc as they believe that those product are safer for them to use and they work good on their skin. So secret #1: Find yourself a good facial cleanser and wash your face twice in the morning and at night before bed

Facial Skin 1

2. Steam your face 2-3 times/ week.

You can totally do this at home with a hot bowl of water with some essential oils or some herbs with a big towel cover over your head like this:

Facial Skin 2

1, It cleanses your pores. Clogged pores are one of the key contributing factors to acne breakouts, and can lead to infection and severe skin irritation. Whether you suffer from acne or have blemish-free skin, one of the best ways to cleanse facial pores is to steam your face. The warm steam causes your face to sweat, which opens the pores and helps soften the surface layer of dead skin cells, releasing dirt and debris that could be the cause of breakouts and would otherwise stay trapped. Our skin naturally produces sebum that protects and lubricates skin, but when it becomes trapped in a follicle, a breakout can occur. One such breakout is in the form of a blackhead. When steam is applied to the face, it softens blackhead plugs, gently releasing them from follicular openings. While this process can help clear up mild acne, those who suffer from severe acne or skin conditions like rosacea should consult a doctor before trying an at home facial steam.Yes, it’s still not a secret but let me tell you why Vietnamese women enjoy steam their face 2-3 times/ week.

2, It makes your skin more receptive to other skincare treatments. Once your pores have opened and the dirt and debris have been eliminated, your clean pores can now better absorb products you might use, such as a face mask or serum.

3, It enhances circulation. Without getting too scientific, steaming your face triggers a thermoregulating response in which blood vessels in the skin dilate so more blood can flow to the skin, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. This is what gives tired, dull skin that rosy, dewy post-steam glow.

Facial Skin 3

4, It helps removes toxins. When you sweat in the steam room or take a hot detoxifying bath, your body perspires and releases toxins. Your face is no different, soĀ facial steamingĀ is a great way to release toxins that could be causing imbalances in your skin.

5 It promotes relaxation. Steam has a calming effect on the system, and if you add essential oils or herbs to the water, you now have a soothing, healing aromatherapy session in an at home facial steam

Good news is they now have a small facial steamer that you can find anywhere especially online. The one you are looking at now is one of them. Does that look fun to you? If yes, why not get one and try it at home now to make some changes to your facial skin!

3. Be a good friend with sunscreen!

Sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet, or UV, rays. It also help reduces risk in skin cancer Ā Ā and to reduce the damage of the sun to your skin. We all know that sunscreen is not only used when it’s sunny outside but you should use it almost everyday. Vietnamese women don’t like the sun. What a big different with western women, right? The same with facial cleansers, we have thousands of different kind of sunscreen here in Vietnam. Korean or Japanese sunscreen are very popular in here and to be honest Vietnamese women love their product when it comes to sunscreen. You can see these are the products that they use.

Facial Skin 4

Facial Skin 5

Oh, I did mention that Vietnamese women don’t like the sun, right? Ā But hang on,let’s look at these photos

Facial Skin 6

You might be asking these quetions like :Who are they? Are they ninja? Is muslim the main religion here?

The answer for all those questions is no… They are just trying to avoid the sun!! This sounds and looks funny but it actually works for Vietnamese women. They think the best way to eliminate the damage from the sun is staying away from it or “hide” from it. Simple as that! So that’s the secret #3!

4. Use face masks!

Face masks are a wonderful way to treat your skin to get deep cleansed, refreshed, soothed, exfoliated.

Get radiant results with masks made with fresh fruit, vegetables, butters, clays and the finest essential oils. Each ingredient is specially chosen for its effect, so no matter what skin you’re in, there’s a mask for that.

In Vietnam, women are using masks that are made from very natural and easy to find ingredients like turmeric powder, honey, yogurt, green tea, oatmeal..etc

Facial Skin 7Facial Skin 8

They believe that using ingredients from mother nature will bring them the best natuaral look and that the way it should be.

Facial Skin 9

5. Last but not least: Using moisturizer and massage your skin everyday.

Moisturizer is key to having healthy-looking, supple skin. It hydrates and helps your skin’s moisture barrier, which can leave you with a glowing complexion. You should be applying moisturizer after cleansing twice a day. However just quickly spreading moisturizer all over your face may not be the most efficient way to apply your product. In fact, a great way to make your skin look beautiful is by massaging moisturizer into your skin. This activates your facial muscles and circulation and can help your skin look brighter and more taught.

These are all the secrets of Vietnamese women for having a natural, healthy-looking skin. They are very easy to do but if you follow their secrets, you will have as beautiful skin as they do so why not give them a try!

Special Clip B A P 6TH ANNIVERSARY To BABY eng sub

It would seem meaningless to state that there have been so many deaths of Korean celebrities (especially, during the last decade or so) due to suicide.

For this article, I chose to list of the Korean celebrities originating from diverse backgrounds and eras, who passed away due to reasons and causes other than suicide.

The listed causes include car accidents, illnesses, health complications and unknown causes that remain as unsolved to this day.

Since a large majority of these incidents happened many years ago, some of these people may not seem very familiar to a lot of the readers but they still have one thing in common: They all died from tragic causes that have hurt their family and loved ones.

And it makes it even more devastating because some of these deaths might or could have been prevented, while other causes were simply tragic events that couldn’t have been helped much.

Brunei’s fashion is highly influenced by Kuala Lumpur, Korean pop culture and the United States. Brunei is an Islamic country 67% of the population who practiced it therefore the laws and unspoken social norms follow it too.

The general Bruneian clothing style for women is a baju kurung which is a traditional costume of Brunei Malays. Baju kurung is loose clothing which involves a long sleeved, knee-length tunic and a long skirt to that reaches the ankles. Muslims and non-Muslims commonly wear them as work attire as well as uniforms for school.

Brunei 1

The other viariations of the costume is baju kebaya which is a similar style except the top is buttoned down and the length varies from hip to knee length. This style originates from Indonesia which is the national costume of their country. The kebaya is often made with silk, thin cotton or artificial fabric that is adorned with floral pattern embroidery. It is also more form-fitting than a baju kurung and a popular choice for events, private functions, weddings as well as Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

Brunei 2

It is also customary for Muslim women to wear tudungs (head scarf) in Brunei. Female students who attend government (public) schools are also required to wear them as part of their uniform. Brunei has its own unique way of wearing tudung and we are often able to tell where a person is from by the style. Brunei tudungs are simpler with an unwrapped bottom, Malaysian style often has a round bottom with a cascading style and Indonesian style is wrapped closer to the neck.

Ā  Brunei 3Brunei 4Brunei 5

Brunei 6

Most people tend to visit the numerous fabric stores to mix and match their designs and have them tailor made. It doesn’t cost very much to make a simple outfit where prices can vary from USD$25. Needless to say, the more intricate the designs (hand sewn embroidery) can also bring the price up to hundreds of dollars. This goes the same, as well for men when it comes to wearing traditional costumes.

Brunei7Brunei8

However, the ever-changing trend of fashion allows people to adapt and make changes according to the season. Most people can easily pick up a long skirt or blouse from the mall or any retailer to pair their outfit rather than needing to wait for their clothes to be made.

Brunei 10

The accessorizing of fashion here are often shoes due to the covered-up styles. The relaxed and slower pace of life also lends to the footwear of choice. Flat shoes are versatile enough to be worn casually and for celebrations. Often times the shoes have large jewels or glitter on them but the colors are often not too bold. Heels are worn too but they are often reserved for more glamorous occasions like Eid-al Fitr or wedding receptions.

Brunei 11

Brunei 12

As mentioned before, there is K-pop culture that has made a fairly large influence and presence in Brunei especially in the cosmetics industry. Some famous chains such as The Face Shop, Holika, Skin Food, Laneige, Clio, etc., have all set up shop in Brunei. Following most Asian cultures, whitening products are quite popular and can be found in soaps, face wash and even body lotions. The words like ā€œwhiteningā€ have been replaced with ā€œbrighteningā€ or ā€œlighteningā€Ā  due to the backlash and bad press of using harsh chemicals.

Brunei13Brunei14

Brunei15

Brunei’s small population makes it difficult for businesses to bring in more varied and newer trending fashion and also to keep prices down. So, the locals have opted to travel to neighbouring countries to shop instead such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or even a 2-hour drive across the border to Miri. Although online shopping has already been going on for more than a few years in other countries, Brunei has only just started using it. Zalora, a Malaysian online clothing company, is the go-to website as they cater to both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Brunei7 1

The traditional costume of men is called baju cara melayu. This consists of cotton or polyester material with long sleeved buttoned shirts, long trousers and a sarong wrap. There isn’t much variation between the neighbouring country’s men’s traditional costume.

Brunei 21

The casual or work attire for men have a much simpler fashion style. The local men often wear simple jeans and t-shirts or shirts paired with sneakers. As indoors are air-conditioned, they tend to sport a hoodie or jacket. The work attire is a button down western shirt, trousers and optional tie.

Brunei 22

Brunei 23

Overall, Brunei’s fashion tends to be quite casual with jeans and t-shirts or long blouses and slippers. It is rare to see a Bruneian dress up unless it is for work, events or celebrations.

I was able to launch a singing career after I participated in the music talent program, ā€œSuperstar K6ā€

I’ve always wanted to become a singer and was interested in taking it up as a career but since I majored in a completely different field;Ā I was not able to experience the musical environment as much I wanted to.

While I was hesitant on whether I would do well on the program, I took up the courage and took part in the show and was able to take a step into doing music.

I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity to learn more about the art and I worked hard and prepared myself a lot since then.

My dream was to be become a singer since I was very young, and I believe my uncle’s influence definitely played a big part in it. I really admired my uncle as a child, and would even say I wanted to marry him. Haha. It really excited me to watch him perform on stage, which made me more interested in becoming a singer as a profession.

It was just a dream of mine, when I was younger to be a singer like my uncle… On the actual day, I made my debut as a singer, my uncle was on the stage with me, performing.

My grandparents also came to watch us, so I felt grateful and it was a such an honor for me.

Do you have any interesting stories you can share while you were on Super Star K Season 6?

Looking back, I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I took part in that talent show…

I was very much in love with music, but didn’t have my own standard, nor was I in any mode of how I should sing or express myself.

But I made an effort to prepare myself as best as I was able to, even when I was very stressed out the whole time. When I reflect back, I realize how unprepared I really was. During the time, I learned a lot, both consciously and unconsciously, from watching the other contestants perform.

Ā

Can you tell us which of your songs you are the most attached to?

I’m very attached to every song I work on, each piece is very precious to me.

But if I was to select just one, the song ā€œStarsā€Ā that was released in October last year in 2017. When I first received this song, each word from the lyrics came into my mind like a movie. It felt like I was floating in space and while I was working on recording it, I fell in love with it completely.

On top of that, I was able to communicate extremely well with Kang Ji-won, who composed the song, so it made it extra easy for me to enjoy myself in the recording process and we were satisfied with the result.

ā€œStarsā€Ā is also a song that is liked by a lot of people, and quite a lot of people recognize my work through that song.

People have come up to me and expressed they gained a lot of encouragement from the song;Ā which made me glad and thankful to get direct compliments and reactions like that. That particular song made me happy and enabled me to feel rewarded for being a singer.

Let us know which artists you particular like or admire.

I like all kinds of genres and don’t have just one preference for a music genre, but I think I tend to listen to British Rock continually.

I especially like StingĀ and U2 very much, I feel that they make and produce music that excites and shakes your heart to the core. I can never forget Sting’s concert I went to a few years back.

The artist that I loved since childhood is BeyoncĆ©, for definite. I searched for all her albums, and even all the songs from her Destiny Child’s era. It’s needless to say, but I’ve watched every single one of her concerts and videos. She gives me a lot of inspiration and has influenced me greatly. Since I’ve been listening to her since my teens, I tend to have more affection for her. I love you, BeyoncĆ©!

Ā

What do you like to do during your free time, for leisure?

I like watching videos. I like surfing for various kinds of music-related videos and just funny entertaining videos I can watch and laugh my heart out to.

There are so many diverse contents and youtubers these days, so I get a lot of inspiration, and gain from watching great videos and contents online.

Ā

What is your favorite food or beverage?

I love pasta. I especially love eating Rosé pasta so I cook that often at home. I also like to drink coffee; my usual choice of coffee is usually Americano or Latte.

Ā

What kind of person is your ideal?

I like someone who has his own definite standards, with set goals. I think I feel attracted to those kinds of people, especially when I converse with them.

And most importantly, I like someone who has a warm heart.

Ā

Tell us about any movies, musicals or books you found inspiring.

Recently, I watched ā€œThe greatest showmanā€Ā and I enjoyed it very much.

Each of the soundtracks were all so great and the movie was just fabulous. It was so incredible to watch that it made me want to be given a chance to appear on a movie like that.

Let us know of your future plans and goals for this year.

Because I am working very hard on new material, I hope that people would show interest for my music this year as well.

I am also preparing to get into acting as well, while also pursuing my music career so please stay with me and support me. Thank you!

Girlkind

Girlkind, a hip-hop Girl group rookie, published their debut single ā€˜FANCI’ on the 17th of January, 2018. Girlkind is currently contracted with Next Level Entertainment.

Girlkind was already popular among many fans even before their debut, thanks to their powerful performance on the ā€˜Performance of the Year 2017’ festival held in Sejong University and their diverse boy-group cover dance videos such as WannaOne’s ā€˜Beautiful’, GOT7’s ā€˜You Are’, Seventeen’s ā€˜Don’t Wanna Cry(ģšøź³ Ā ģ‹¶ģ§€Ā ģ•Šģ•„)’, etc.. Girlkind’s Cover dance video of BTS’s ā€˜DNA’ was especially popular among many male fans, and from then was called as ā€˜Female BTS’. Even now, one can easily find several fan cams uploaded on YouTube, which recorded more than a million views. Girlkind’s debut single ā€˜FANCI’ placed high on several music charts after it was released, and Girlkind also performed in many stages and programs such as ā€˜Show! Champion’, ā€˜M Countdown’, ā€˜Music Bank’ and ā€˜INKIGAYO’.

Girlkind is composed of JK, Xeheun, SUN J, Ellyn and Medic Jin, five members in total, and their average age is only 20. Particularly, Xeheun had many fans even before debut thanks to her experience in ā€˜Produce 101 Season 1’ broadcasted in 2016. Sun J is also said to have appeared on TV drama of EBS, ā€˜Mirror Princess’, when she was only 11. The remaining three members are also loved by many fans since they possess many talents necessary for a good Hip-hop Girl group: gifted dance skills, outstanding rap skills and a unique singing ability.

One can easily understand how confident Girlkind is through their new debut single ā€˜FANCI’. There are lyrics such as ā€˜We’re the girls with the FANCI what uh, We’re the girls with the flash what uh, skills and appearance that you told me, why not me go uh’ or ā€˜Style and Class and FANCI that you still cannot follow, look directly into my eyes oh’. Based on synthesizer sound and bass riff, ā€˜FANCI’ is an EDM Hip-hop song with trendy melody that anybody can easily repeat.

Many singers and talents already expressed their amusement and expectations on Girlkind. BolBbangan4, a famous duo girl band, congratulated Girlkind’s debut and spoke highly of their dancing skills. Kino, a member of ā€˜PENTAGON’, asked for love and attention on Girlkind’s new debut single ā€˜FANCI’. As such, Girlkind is a hip-hop girl group that even senior singers praise and pay attention to.

Unlike many other girl groups that point out cutie or lovely concepts, Girlkind puts up ā€˜Girl Crush’ as their primary weapon. Therefore, they are expected to bring new style and a ā€˜girl crush’ boom to Korea’s music world. With pure appearance, excellent singing skills and powerful dancing abilities, Girlkind has a potential to become a better and a more popular girl group in the near future.

More information regarding Girlkind can easily be found on their official website (www.nextlevelent.co.kr) or on official Facebook and Instagram website of Girlkind.

7ane DUI Feat PENOMECO – English Subbed

This WednesdayĀ only series will provide English subtitles on select videos. We hope you will enjoy.

Veganism is a lifestyle that excludes exploitation and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or everyday products.

There are many ways to embrace a Vegan lifestyle;Ā like keeping a plant-based diet which prevents them from consuming meat, fish, shellfish, dairy, insects, honey, leather and any products tested on animals.

At KCRUSH America, we interviewed a Vegan Chef who operates a business in Seoul where she sells vegan products online, in hope that this interview would provide great resource and information to those who are interested in the idea of pursuing a Vegan lifestyle.

Vegan 1 1024x738

Hello, thank you for taking a KCRUSH interview. Would you kindly introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello, my name is Han Hee-jung and I am the founder and CEO of Vegbox, which is a Vegan market. I supply Vegan products to individual consumers and retailers;Ā while I also provide Vegan culture contents as well.

Ā

What made you start this business?

There are three founding members in our company, who all have their own careers – as a web developer, a designer and a cooking class instructer – we all work together and do our part in this Vegan product business.

Then we all encountered the same issue, which was the fact that we couldn’t find Vegan products very easily in Korea.

At times, there were so many cuisines we could’ve made that we couldn’t because we lacked one special ingredient. Like the Vegan cheese we now sell at our company for example.

After contemplating, we decided to start a business to supply the Vegan products for people who experienced the same issues as we did.

Ā

Tell us why you recommend a Vegan life, and enlighten us on what Veganism is all about.

There are so many reasons why people choose to become Vegan.

To name a few, it may be due to health reasons, environment issues, redistribution of wealth, animal rights and etc. I can’t state just one reason but I chose to become a Vegan because I seeked to have a more peaceful meal for myself.

I think I began to pursue a Vegan lifestyle because I found it ironic that a meal that was beneficial for a person could also cause death or harm to another animal.

I am also very satisfied of the outcome because the effect on our Vegan products is greater than I imagined.

As Jeremy RifkinĀ mentioned in his book, Beyond Beef, I think the Vegan way of life could be the solution for people’s health, environment, as well as protecting the abused animals and benefit the human race.

Ā

Tell us about your currently best-selling product. Ā

Soy meat, almond milk and coconut milk which are alternatives for milk are very popular and croissants that do not contain any milk, butter and eggs are also doing well.

But the best-selling product would be the Vegan cheese.

The Vegan cheese are usually popular to consumers who are allergic to milk, but they are also for those who are ā€œcheese maniasā€ wishing to try out different types of cheese like, smoked cheese, baked cheese, hot pepper cheese and more.

Ā

What kind of food do you normally enjoy eating?

I used to be someone who loved to eat Korean food with rice.

But nowadays, I get to eat a lot of pizzas and pasta since I spend time on developing and consulting about menus which involves using Vegan cheese.

I enjoy eating gluten-free pasta with a touch of oil and herbs. I also like Vegan cheese pizza with all sorts of veggies on top.

When do you feel the most content while you’re working?

At times, we receive phone calls from our customers, thanking us for our products.

A mother once said that her child couldn’t eat cheese and milk like the rest of the familyĀ when she couldn’t get lacto-free products before. So she was thankful that she could get our Vegan products.

Another person, who hadn’t had pasta for years due to being allergic to gluten, also gave us a call to thank us for the product.

Then I realized how a product could be so crucial for someone, so I decided to work harder at this work of importing even tough it requires so much work.Ā

Vegan 2

What do you like to do for leisure?

I like to work out. I work during the night time because I have to work with the people abroad, I really need to stay fit and healthy. I exercise, swim and do scuba diving regularly.

What do you find the most difficult when running a business?

Vegan products are not yet very well-known in Korea.

Even when we were providing selective and the best products from many different countries around the world, it was hard to persuade people and let them understand why Vegan products are vital compared to other products and it was also difficult to persuade the retailers who were unsure of our products.

So we decided to show the public the prospects of the Vegan market currently, the pros of the vegan products, offer menus we developed by using Vegan products and promote the retailers of our products as well.

For the individuals who are hesitant to use, consume our products, we provide videos of menus we developed, share recipe books via blogs, hold pop-up restaurants at various events and flea markets, so people can come and sample our Vegan products.

Please tell us about your plans and wishes for 2018?

I’d like to reach out to more people with diverse products in the future. Since our company’s main product is Vegan cheese, we also want to launch different brands to introduce in Korea.

Next year, we’d like to explore further with our business and export our excellent quality Vegan products from Korea to Mexico.

Thank you for the time. We wish you all the best in all your ventures!

Malaysia 1

If you google which country in the world has the most number of national or public holidays, you’ll find Malaysia in the top five with 16 national holidays and that’s excluding the individual state holidays each state in Malaysia may have, such as the Sultan of the state’s birthday, etc..

Other than the usual New Year’s Day, Labor Day and Independence Day holidays in common with other countries, Malaysia’s rich multicultural population has resulted in many more festivals or celebrations commemorated with holidays, which comes as no surprise if you just look at the various cultural backgrounds of its people.

Its population of around 30 million people comprising Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazan/Dusun and many more indigenous cultures makes for a melting pot of different festivities such as Eid (also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji by the locals), Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Thaipusam, Wesak Day, Christmas Day, Gawai Dayak Day and others.

As we welcome 2018, one of the first of these festivities will be the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations on 16th and 17th February. An important celebration for the Chinese community around the world and not only in Malaysia, it marks the first day of the lunar calendar and is an opportunity for family to gather once a year for the customary reunion dinner on the eve of the holiday.

Malaysia 2

Each year has an animal zodiac and for this year, it is the Earth Dog which some believe signifies a year of taking action and fulfilling plans. Taking a walk in the city streets of Kuala Lumpur or one of the many shopping malls, you will be hard pressed not to notice the beautiful decorations marking the festivities as the holiday draws nearer.

Malaysia 3

Red lanterns, fireworks and cherry blossom tree decorations abound to remind and create the New Year atmosphere for shoppers and visitors alike. In the lead up to the holiday, you’ll find many goods for sale with this theme in mind. Clothes, bags, shoes (and even tissue paper boxes) in the lucky red color and adorned with Chinese symbols or the dog zodiac are widely available to entice shoppers looking for outfits to wear during the festivities.

However, once the day arrives, these very same streets and malls which were previously bustling will turn quite empty as the city folks return to their various hometowns for their family gatherings – a pivotal part of the celebrations.

In addition to the customary reunion dinner, the holiday is also spent visiting extended family with ā€˜ang pows’ or red packets filled with money given out to children and unmarried visitors by married couples – a much looked forward to practice especially by the children!

Malaysia 4

Mandarin oranges are also a common gift as the word for it in Chinese – ā€˜kam’, means ā€˜gold’ signifying giving riches and wishing prosperity to the receiver. Local Chinese temples also come alive with devotees offering prayers as well as curious visitors observing local customs.

Once back to their respective homes, the festivities continue with open houses held usually on weekends for friends and neighbors to enjoy good food and offer well wishes for the New Year.

Although Malaysians celebrate many different cultural festivities according to their own backgrounds, these open houses are a common thread among the different celebrations, providing friends and neighbors a wonderful occasion to come together and join in the various cultural celebrations regardless of race or religion.

IRONģ•„ģ“ģ–ø blu블루 MV – English Subbed

This WednesdayĀ only series will provide English subtitles on select videos. We hope you will enjoy.

As long as I can remember, I’ve always loved watching something from a moving screen. One of my earliest memories as a toddler is watching a French movie that was aired on TV, and to this day, I spend a considerable amount of my free time watching documentaries, talk shows, films, educational programs, interviews and the various.

When it comes to comedy films, I’m not particularly fond of slapstick movies with unrealistic or obvious storylines and endings. Instead, I enjoy flicks that have amusing dialogues, interesting but convincing scenarios and unpredictable ending that don’t leave me regretting about spending my time watching the movies.

I’ve listed 5 Korean comedy movies, which were released in the 21st century – but quite a while ago – which I have watched more than once or… several times in the past.

It would be fair to state that, except for Guns & Talks, the rest of these movies failed to become huge hits in the Korean box office, however we should keep in mind that it would never be right to judge a movie on how many audience it attracted.

Guns & Talks (2001)

Korean Comedy 1

Director and Writer: Director Jang Jin.
Cast: Shin Hyun-joon, Won Bin, Shin Ha-kyun, Jung Jae-young, Jung Jin-young

Guns & Talks is a movie about a band of assassins, consisting of leader, Sang-yeon, bomb expert Jung-woo, sniper Jae-young and computer specialist Ha-yoon.

The four men operate a private (and illegal) business where they meet their clients privately to discuss the time, place, how they want their victims to be killed, before they undergo the tasks. As a procedure, they take a photo of their clients as a souvenir to be displayed on their wall when their mission is accomplished.

Despite their secretive occupation, the quartet manage to lead a pretty normal life. None of them are extreme intellectuals – they are simple-minded and clueless about most things in the world. However, when it comes to work, they regard themselves as highly professional and they have no trouble living this way.

But cracks begin to show when the killing doesn’t come easy for some of them as before.
With an instinctive detective tailing them, things begin to complicate and they start to wonder if their work is really worth it.

For me personally, Guns & Talks was a similar experience as reading a comic book. There were many unrealistic scenes throughout the movie, but they weren’t overdone, making the scenario pretty enjoyable for both male and female audiences.

Happy Killers (2010)

Korean Comedy 2Director: Kim Dong-wook
Based on the short story, ā€˜Happy Killers’ by Seo Mi-ae
Cast: Kim Dong-wook, Yu Oh-seong, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Mi-do

A police detective named, Jung-min is assigned to catch a serial killer who murders one female every evening when it rains in the neighborhood.

Jung-min is having a frustrating time at work for always being scolded by his boss, and the tension arises as neighborhood residents gather to protest, because the police can’t seem to catch the serial killer for months. Jung-min is determined to track down the killer but his plans are hindered by Young-seok, a bankrupt and jobless man in mid 40s, who is also fervently out to catch the murderer as well.

His goal is to win the reward offered and his insurance claim, so he can send his daughter abroad to study music, which was what he had planned to do before his business failed.

Young-seok’s well-planned research and sharp instincts gradually lead him closer to catching the killer ahead of the police, but when his own daughter begins to get suspicious of him going out every rainy evening in female attire… things get out of hand for everyone involved.

Korean Comedy 3

This movie didn’t do that well in the box office, and most viewers in Korea who were used to seeing actor, Yu Oh-seong play more stern and mysterious characters before, expressed disappointment with his role and acting in this particular flick.

I personally thought the movie had some mildly hilarious lines, while Shim Eun-kyung and Lee Mi-do’s characters were quite realistically acted out and entertaining. Kim Dong-wook’s character as the troublemaker police detective was also portrayed well.

For most viewers, finding out who the serial killer is, would probably not be predictable until the very end.

Twilight Gangsters (2010)

Korean Comedy 4 1024x683Director: Kang Hyo-jin
Writer: Han Ki-Eop, Ruth Toma
Cast: Na Mun-hee, Kim Su-mi, Gong Shin-ja, Lim Chang Jung

This movie is about three best friends who are in their senior years.
Jung-Ja was once a convict and currently suffering from cancer. Young-Hee has just become a widow, and notably the loudest one of the group. Shin-Ja is a widow, who is the youngest, is also the frailest one.

For almost a decade, the three elderly ladies diligently saved every dime for a trip to Hawaii. They undertook odd jobs, by working in kimchi factories, cleaning public toilets – as well as occasionally robbing supermarkets and auctioning off the stolen goods.

Korean Comedy 5The trio have now finally saved up the exact sum to get themselves VIP packages to their most wanted destination: Honolulu, Hawaii…

When they visit the bank to wire the money, the bank suddenly gets turned over by robbers just when the ladies were about to get the sum deposited by the bank clerk. They lose their savings to the robber but the bankers do not claim any responsibility, which leaves the three ladies dismayed.

Then the ladies come to a decision to get their money back somehow, even if it means attempting the seemingly impossible.

Villain & Widow (2010)

Korean Comedy 6

Director: Son Jae-gon
Writer: Son Jae-gon
Cast: Kim Hye-soo, Han Suk-kyu, Ji Woo

Yeon-joo is a widow, suffering from depression and insomnia. She lives with her only child, Seong-ah, who used to be a child model but is currently being teased at school for her looks. (K-pop boy band, U-Kiss’ member, Dong-ho also played a minor role as a school boy who harasses her.)

In order to financially support herself and her daughter from plunging into a deeper debt, Yeon-joo decides to rent out a spare room on the second floor of her house.

Her tenant seems like a harmless man who claims to need a room for a month or two, to write his novel. In reality, Chang-in is a professional thief who’s trying to find a set of ancient tea cups that Yeon-joo’s deceased husband hid in the house.

Before moving in, Chang-in initially thought it would be a piece of cake to discover the priceless utensils – but as time ticks on – the task turns out to be a little too difficult.

My New Partner (2008)

Korean Comedy 7 1024x819Director: Kim Jong-Hyeon
Writer: Kim Jong-Hyeon, Yoon Jae-Keun
Cast: Ahn Seong-ki, Jo Han-sun, Park Chul-min, Sun Woo-sun

Young-Joon is a very lieutenant who graduated from the Police Academy.

He’s been assigned the mission to join an investigation team in Busan whose chief is his estranged father whom he hasn’t seen for eight or so years. This case involves a heavy drug trafficking, so Young-joon has no choice but to cooperate and stay with his father and his unruly team until the case gets solved.

His father, Min-Ho relies on natural instincts and keeps no laws or regulations when it comes to investigating, unlike his son. The pair can’t see eye to eye and there is still a lot of animosity brewing on Young-joon’s part because of what his father had done to his mother in the past.

The investigation seems to bring the father and son closer somehow, but is a suspected mole in the police force and Yeong-joon can’t help suspecting his own father.

This movie features quite a bit of action, blended with a little comedy here and there. The action scenes are worth-watching and the main characters acted by Ahn Seong-ki and Jo Han-sun make this movie very worthwhile to watch.

Visiting Vietnam you would have so many choices for places to see and different foods to eat. If you want to experience the “hustle and bustle” Vietnam, I would recommend you to visit big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City but if you want to relax and want to explore more about the history of Vietnam, the Middle of Vietnam is your choice, especially Hoi An ancient town, Quang Nam province.

Hoian 1

What is it about this town that makes it so special?

Hoi An Ancient town is located in Viet Nam’s central Quang Nam Province, on the north bank of the Thu Bon River. The inscribed property comprises of 30 hectares and has a buffer zone of 280 hectares. It is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a small-scale trading port of activity between the 15th and 19th centuries, both with the countries of Southeast Asia and with the rest of the world. Its decline in the later 19th century ensured that it has retained its traditional urban tissue to a remarkable degree.

Hoian 2

Hoian 3 1024x476

The surviving wooden structures and street plan are original and intact and present a traditional townscape of the 17th and 18th centuries, the survival of which is unique in the region. The town continues to be occupied and functions as a trading port and center of commerce. The living heritage reflecting the diverse communities of the indigenous inhabitants of the town, as well as the foreigners, has also been preserved and continues to be passed on. Hoi An Ancient Town remains an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Far Eastern port.

What is the best thing to do in Hoi An?

Hoian 4
The answer is to attend the Hoi An Lantern Festival.

The Hoi An Lantern Festival is a monthly event that celebrates the full moon. The full moon is one of the most sacred times in the Buddhist calendar. It is said that Buddha was not only born on a full moon but attained enlightenment on a full moon. And so for centuries Buddhists have viewed the moon as an auspicious time of transformation.

Hoian 5

Even today people all over Asia view the full moon as a time to meditate, observe rituals, reflect on life and worship their ancestors. This is done in many ways from offerings made at family shrines to the burning of incense and the lighting of candles. In recent years these traditions have morphed into the popular Hoi An Lantern Festival.

Hoian 6 1024x680

Hoian 7Hoian 8
Releasing lanterns on the river is said to bring good fortune and love. It is a tradition in there to release lanterns to hope for happiness and health.

You can buy lanterns along the river from the local sellers for about 50 cents – $1 where there are also pop up street food stores, souvenir stalls and ancient game stalls. The night market is busy and full of smiley and friendly face.
Some couples also choose the day of this colorful festival to take their wedding photo album too

Hoian 9Hoian 10

The Hoi An Lantern Festival is a stunning experience and you will surely have a great time with the colorful, lantern filled evening in Hoi An.

If you are visiting Hoi An in 2018 and wish to join this beautiful and colorful festival, here are the schedules for this year:

2018 Hoi An Lantern Festival dates:
30 Jan, 1st March, 30th March, 29th April, 28th May, 27th June, 26th July, 24th August, 23rd September, 22nd October, 21st November, 20th December.

Useful tips:
To make the most of your Hoi An Lantern Festival experience, follow these tips:

– Use a wrist strap on your camera and attach your phone to a lanyard – you do not want your expensive items accidentally knocked out of your hand.
– Visit in February for the Hoi An Lantern Festival at its most brilliant – the first full moon of the lunar new year is the biggest celebration of them all.
– Expect crowds and arrive early to get a good spot. It’s a popular event with locals and tourists so Hoi An’s river banks fill up with people to look forward to a good view of the candle-lit water.
– If you want to escape the crowds, take a sampan ride on the river – you can watch the festivities away from the masses and more easily place your lantern on the water’s surface (expect to pay around USD $ 5)
– Buy handmade lanterns locally for a cost of around 50 cents – the vendor will usually lend you a long pole to lower the lantern onto the water
– Wear sturdy shoes – there’s a good chance you’ll have your feet trodden on as you navigate the busy streets.

That’s all you need to know and you are now ready to roll!
