K-Entertainment world is facing a new trend now, challenge marketing events using Chinese social App ‘Tiktok’ is spreading like a wildfire.
Tiktok’s strongest point as a Short-form video platform is creating a synergy effect with new generations’ interest, as they like to present themselves to the world by showing their originalities. Until 2019 K-Entertainment was not visibly sharing this pie, but from a series of successful campaigns made recently, it is witnessing Tiktok’s outstanding media influence power.
Top K-pop boy group BTS has released a teaser video of new title song ‘ON’ in their latest 4th studio album <Map of the sol:7>. The earliest access was given to Tiktok users, however, putting aside most powerful streaming websites or even youtube. The new teaser achieved 5 million views in the first hour from Tiktok alone, skyrocketing to 6.5 mil views in the following hour. Starting its first Tiktok account at Sept 2019, BTS is also famous for fastest reaching 1 million followers in only 3 and a half hours – They also ranked top of the ‘Korean Artist Top 10’ selected by Tiktok, outpacing Blackpink, TXT, Park Ji Hoon, StrayKids, Cha Eun Woo, and Momoland.
Advent of K-Tiktok challenges
BTS is not a pioneer of Tiktok K-pop marketing, though. 2019 winter-release ‘FEVER’ by JYP founder and singer Park Jin-Young, and ‘Flower Shower’ by artist Hyuna has been using Tiktok challenge as a marketing platform. But we cannot really talk about ‘New Song Challenge fever’ without referring to rapper ZICO (former Block-B leader). When he posted a video of himself dancing by his new song on January 2020, celebrities including Hwasa, Chungha and uploaded dancing video with hashtag #anysongchallenge. As this went viral and turned into a public fad, overall view of this challenge has reached over 800 million by this February. The extraordinary success of this Tiktok campaign also earned him global awareness, helping his ‘Any Song’ rank #4 Billboard World Digital song. Starting from ZICO, New K-Pop Song challenge has flooded into Tiktok from Feb 2020 – such as ‘#HandsUpChallenge’ by Cherry Bullet, ‘#CrossroadChallenge’ by GFriend, ‘#SoWhatChallenge’ by LOONA, and you name it.
Recently emerging campaigns are Tiktok challenges highly engaged with social welfare activities, and these are where you can find K-drama actors or actresses’ participation. With the recent global situation of COVID-19 lockdown, a couple of public ad challenges have been created by hashtag ‘#LemonChallenge’ (eating a lemon after washing hands according to COVID-19 guidelines, then donating $190), ‘#FlowerBucketChallenge’(gifting a bouquet of flowers in order to save endangered flowering industry), and more. Actor Lee Seung-Gi and actress Ha Jiwon has recently posted a challenge shots collaborating with UNICEF (#Short-but-steady-happiness), raising funds for children with Tiktok account they created last year.
How Tiktok Challenge interacts with K-Entertainment world
These new formats of marketing start from active collaboration of Tiktok and individual musician/celebrities. Global influence among younger generations, which Tiktok can provide, is such an attractive offer for celebrities; Consistent reactions from World-famous stars, and their social account activities help Tiktok expand its business toward global market. Either Tiktok or Individuals can suggest new marketing campaigns, while Individuals or their agency can make plans for content by themselves.
But even if celebrities create a new challenge and Tiktok promotes it, the entire plan does not work If there is no one who takes the challenge and performs it. Challenge marketing stands for ‘voluntary participation and diffusion’; instead of waiting for articles or social media postings of the favorite star, Fans enjoy their fan life uploading & sharing challenges, thus actively engaging into content creation. To lead successful viral marketing, K-stars and their Fans are working together now.
How Tiktok is changing public attitudes
As a social media platform, Tiktok has a strong merit of 15-min long video service. You don’t have to spend a great deal of your time to create such a short content; yet you can still put fun elements such as stickers, music, effect tools and make your video attractive. With these advantages Tiktok is getting spotlight as a new marketing breakthrough in the K-Entertainment world.
But how Tiktok changes K-Entertainment fans is even more interesting. Before then fangirls and fanboys found themselves far away from their stars, since these stars were the only ones who could put a lot of time and effort to provide attractive content. But with Tiktok’s 15-min video and some editing work people found content-making much easier, found K-stars lot more relatable and this is letting them engage in K-Entertainment more enthusiastic ways.
‘DancerSona’ is a Korean Tiktok celebrity with 2.2 million followers, and It’s easy to find her dancing Kpop choreos & taking part in Kpop challenges such as ‘#Anysong challenge’. But she is not one of those Kpop stars -what she shows her followers with her video is how she dances. She represents how ordinary people can enjoy memes from K-Entertainment & yet showing her own identity using Tiktok.
It is clear that Tiktok is slowly, but steadily changing the geography of the K-Entertainment world. Through Tiktok two-way communication is made between celebrities and their fans. Both Stars and Fans are creating memes among the social media world, and the boundary of content creator and its viewer is getting blurred. It is worth watching how the collaboration of Tiktok and Korean Entertainment Industry will lead to a new fandom culture.

The singer Yoonhak from the Korean group Supernova, formed in 2007, is the first Korean celebrity to be officially diagnosed with COVID-19.
Once Yoonhak was diagnosed on 1st April, the places he visited have become public knowledge. And it has recently been reported that just before he started showing symptoms, he met up with a female acquaintance who works at one of the “adult entertainment establishments” in the Gangnam area.
These establishments sell strong liquor and offer private rooms where sexual activities occur, though they do not usually admit it to be the case. This particular venue is known to have 100 members of staff working there, and dozens of private rooms underground. These rooms are kept very private and shut while the visitors are there, with the staff moving from room to room, so one virus carrier among the staff could do a lot of harm to a great number of people.
Yoonhak says that he never went into the venue and privately met the said worker in his car, but a great panic is caused by this revelation, nevertheless. Shortly afterwards the encounter, she was tested positive for the coronavirus as well. Her roommate, also a worker at a similar establishment, has also been tested positive.
It is impossible to tell how many people Yoonhak’s “friend” came into contact with, although the venue has provided the health authorities with a list of about 100 names. It is obvious that this kind of business will not reveal a lot of the names. It is also well known that celebrities, sports stars and other well-known persons visit these places often; they would definitely not want to be openly associated with their favorite venues of entertainment.
Yoonhak returned from Japan on 24th March and started showing symptoms a couple of days later. While it is now mandatory for anyone having been abroad to keep to themselves for two weeks and avoid going out, at that time it was only a strong recommendation. And it seems that the singer had refused to take it. He went and met the woman in question, and she in turn is known to have worked 9 hours the following day at the Gangnam venue.
The health authorities have recommended anyone who visited the establishment to get tested for COVID-19. One journal estimates at least 500 people to be at risk. We may be seeing the beginning of an outbreak in certain circles of the Korean society.

Our new online live-stream initiative started 2 weeks ago to great success, continuing the mission of bringing people together. The field of Korean politics is known for its dynamics. And with the elections coming up, there is not a day gone by without some excitement.
The 21st legislative election is to be held on the 15th this month. The Korean National Assembly, the equivalent of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, consists of 300 members who will all be either re-elected, or leaving their office.
The public sentiment, perhaps not entirely reflected by the polls, is more negative than otherwise against the current government made up of the Democratic Party. It is due partly to the recent outbreak of the new coronavirus and its effect on the economy, but it is undeniable that the Korean economy had been suffering quite badly for quite some time. The most significant opposition, the United Future Party is a new formation of mostly conservative factions. Its main objective is to pull the reins in on President Moon’s policies.
In the recent days, there have been endless happenings in and around the party. On 9th April, there was an attempt to attack its candidate for the district of Gwang-jin, Seoul. The said candidate is a Mr. Oh Se-hoon, who is a former mayor of the capital. The apprehended attacker was said to be in his fifties, and was caught with a knife in hand. He was stopped before anyone was hurt.
Despite the fact that guns are practically non-existent in the civic life of Korea, there is the occasional violent attack for political reasons. As it happens, the legislator-candidate Oh was on his election campaign with the former President Park Geun-hye when a man cut her face just below the ear with a knife.
In 2015 there has also been an American Ambassador, Mark Lippert, who was terrorized and cut in the arm and around the same area as the former President Park. The weapon in this incident was also a knife. During and after Park’s impeachment, the streets filled with protesters on her behalf have also been attacked by cars and knifes.
Most of these acts of terror are usually explained away with a mental illness, but there is no denying the fact that the perpetrators also had very pronounced political inclinations. It is perhaps just as well that, because of COVID-19, these are not exactly the time for travelling the country or being on a crowded street. For the time being, caution is advised for residents in Korea.

The Power of Nunchi: The Korean Secret to Happiness and Success is out. Translation rights have been sold in 17 regions, and this US release comes on the heels of a triumphant debut in the UK and France.
What is nunchi? To find out, read the New York Times piece that ran earlier. Also, it’s #1 on Amazon for the category of “Interpersonal relationships” in New Releases. And the book has only been out for a short time!
Nunchi, which translates to “eye-measure”, is the subtle Korean art of reading the room. If you’re Korean, your parents probably yelled at you for not having any. Koreans have an expression, “A person with quick nunchi can eat shrimp at a temple” , which makes sense if you understand that Buddhist temples are vegetarian. In other words, someone with fast nunchi can part the waters. And if you lack nunchi? People simply won’t want to be around you and they will never tell you why. This impairs your relationships, your career, and overall sense of grounding.
You know people with quick nunchi: They’re the first among your friends to sense when two people have a crush on each other. The person in your office who accurately predicts who is going to be laid off. The host who creates a smooth distraction when a guest breaks something or farts loudly.
You also know people without nunchi: That person in the work meeting who says, “Wait, I have one more question actually,” as you’re about to break for lunch. The friend who doesn’t notice that everyone rolls their eyes when they talk. The world leader who tries to buy an autonomous Danish territory and, upon discovering he has made an error, draws even more attention to it.
Read The Power of Nunchi to find out why Koreans say “Half of social life is nunchi!”
Early praise for The Power of Nunchi:
“Deceptively simple yet profoundly wise”–Publishers Weekly
“It should also be read by all politicians, as Brexit negotiations drag on, and by those struggling in fractious relationships, or families squabbling on holiday.”–The Times (UK)
“This book is my essential reading for 2019; it’s the golden buzzer – a simple, but life-changing, book for society” (Sunday Independent (Ireland))
“Given how powerful nunchi can be in our relationships and careers, I’ve often wondered whether it could be taught. Putting a modern spin on an ancient concept, Euny Hong shows that it can be, and had me laughing at and relating to her observations in this wise and witty guide.” (Juju Chang, co-anchor of ABC News’s NIGHTLINE)
“A must-read for anyone interested in the art of intuitively knowing what others feel.” (Haemin Sunim, bestselling author of THE THINGS YOU CAN SEE ONLY WHEN YOU SLOW DOWN and LOVE FOR IMPERFECT THINGS)
“Whip-smart, hilarious, and filled with eye-opening insights on every page, The Power of Nunchi will make you rethink the way you approach the world and help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. I couldn’t put it down.” (Amy Chua, author of BATTLE HYMN OF THE TIGER MOTHER)
“A life-changer for someone like me who struggles with emotional intelligence and personal relationships. Beautifully written and filled with actionable advice, it has changed the way I deal with social situations. It really feels like having a superpower!” (Héctor García, co-author of IKIGAI: THE JAPANESE SECRET TO A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE)
“I’ve been using The Power of Nunchi in all aspects of my life and I’ve been truly kicking ass . . . The best twenty dollars you’ll spend all year!” (Gary Shteyngart, New York Times bestselling author of SUPER SAD TRUE LOVE STORY)
You can find Nunchi, on amazon or goodreads.
The Power of Nunchi compels you!

More than four months have passed since the tragic suicide of Goo Hara, best known as a member of the Korean girl band Kara. Besides a self-restraining effect it has had online commenters who are often less than kind, Goo’s death has given rise to discussions on two ethical issues in the Korean society today, most ostensibly led by her older brother’s campaign. These issues are significant because they could well end up bringing about changes in the law.
The first is about Goo’s closest blood relation who will benefit from her death: her mother. Goo’s brother has openly declared that her (and his) mother had abandoned them when they were very young, and that it is not fair for her to benefit by her daughter’s inheritance.
This issue has been raised before. For example, after the drowning of school children in the Sewol ferry, and the death of a single father with children whose mother had abandoned them, the question was raised whether it was right for the “underserving” parents to benefit by the government’s compensation or insurance money.
In the case of Goo, her brother has led a formal petition for a “Goo Hara Bill” to be passed by the National Assembly. The petition has been signed by a hundred thousand people and therefore qualifies to be reviewed by the relevant committee made up of legislators.
The gist of the bill is to disqualify “immediate family members of the deceased who have grossly neglected the duty to protect or support the deceased”. If the bill is passed, it will not stop Goo’s mother from inheriting, but things may be different for others who abandon or neglect their family members.
The second issue to be raised recently by Goo’s brother is related to her ex-boyfriend Choi Jong-beom, who at the first trial was found not-guilty of illegally photographing her, though guilty of physical assault and blackmail. The court acknowledged that Choi’s photographs of Goo were sexual and could invoke humiliation, but that there were insufficient grounds to suppose that they were taken against her will.
Goo Ho-in, Goo Hara’s older brother, is addressing this issue as a date-violence problem. He has openly accused Choi of driving his sister to suicide. After being released on probation, Choi was allegedly unremorseful and threw a party at his new venue of business, a couple of months before Goo Hara’s suicide.
This is clearly a moral or ethical issue. In the eyes of the law Choi is not a murderer, and callousness is not punishable.
However, in Korea, public sentiments tend to go a long way in establishing a precedent that may redefine a crime. It may be that “date violence” could be stretched to include something that ended up in an unforeseen tragedy, or it may be that Choi’s apparent lack of remorse may render him guilty in more ways in the appeal court, which opens in May.
It will be interesting to see what changes, if any, are brought about in Korea regarding “undeserving beneficiaries” and “date violence”.

COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) doesn’t discriminate as celebrities, sports stars, and regular citizens have been struggling with the effects of 2020’s global pandemic. In South Korea, a K-Pop idol active in Japan has tested positive for COVID-19 becoming the first South Korean celebrity to do so.
Yunhak, who is a member of the group Supernova that is mostly active in Japan, became the first Korean celebrity to come down with the virus.
According to reports, Yunhak returned to South Korea from Japan on March 24. When he returned home, he noticed symptoms of the virus and was tested March 31. His test came back positive on April 1; he has since been in quarantine and treated in a Seoul-area hospital.
In related COVID-19 news, Kim Minkyu and The Boyz’s Juyeon both tested negative for the virus. Juyeon and Minkyu co-host The Show with EVERGLOW’s Sihyeon. The pair were tested after one of EVERGLOW’s staffers tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. The Show has halted production while staff undergoes quarantine; Minkyu, Juyeon, and Sihyeon will also engage in quarantine.
Meanwhile, all members of EVERGLOW also tested negative for the virus following news of the first staffer’s diagnosis but will also follow quarantine precautions. Yuehua Entertainment announced the results of the staffer and EVERGLOW members in a statement; they announced that EVERGLOW’s schedule is now postponed.

Certain employees of the company who potentially had interaction with this employee also undergone testing, with several of them reported negative and some others are waiting for their pending tests. When they are available, we will inform you all with additional information
In the case of EVERGLOW, whilst all the members screened negative, we agreed to postpone the whole of their forthcoming activities in order to guarantee their safety; The members must follow self-quarantine protocols during the next 2 weeks in compliance with the Government’s health and safety decree.
In the future Yue Hua Entertainment will instead choose to cooperate in whatever way we can, understanding the seriousness of this present situation.
We apologize for raising worries and we pledge to double our measures to protect everybody’s health and safety from COVID19.
A second EVERGLOW staffer also tested positive for the virus. Yuehua Entertainment announced the news via a secondary statement.
This is Yuehua Entertainment.
We are here to share the news that another staff member in our agency has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
The second staff member was someone who worked most closely with the first staff member who was diagnosed, and they ate a meal together on March 27. The second staff member received their test results on April 3.
The staff member is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, and we will continue to monitor the situation.
We wish to once again express our apologies for causing concern to fans and representatives, and we will continue follow the guidelines given by the government and related institutions and do as much as we can.
Rapper Kisum is also self-quarantining as she shared a waiting room with the EVERGLOW staff. While she has currently tested negative, her schedule for the next two weeks has been canceled.
“Everyone, don’t worry too much! I’m healthy,” Kisum wrote on social media. “After I safely self-isolate, I’ll be back. You should all also always wear a mask, wash your hands as soon as you get home, and use hand sanitizer. Together, we can beat this.”
While she is no longer in the K-Pop industry since leaving SNSD, Tiffany Young’s tour manager, Tara Anne, has also tested positive for COVID-19. The announcement was made on a GoFundMe set up for her to assist in paying for medical care.
Our friend Tara has recently learned she has come down with a case of Covid-19 caused by the Coronavirus strain, which has also resulted in her developing pneumonia as well.
As any of us would assume, this is an unexpected hardship to face physically and financially, which can require a little monetary support to get through it. Tara has played an important role for many musicians and touring artists, ensuring everyone is taken care of and in good spirits. Let’s help with doing the same for her.
This support will help Tara with not being able to work while focusing on recovering and also contribute to a yet unknown amount of medical expenses which have been incurred so far. There will be limitations in health insurance and out of pocket costs for testing including an ER visit and medication costs, upwards of $500 at minimum. There is rent, bills, and a soon to be lack of health coverage on the horizon that monetary support can help supplement.
Now is as great of time as ever to lend a friend a hand if we are in a position to do so- Tara surely would do the same. Thank you!
Earlier in March, singer Chungha self-quarantined after two of her staff members tested positive for COVID-19 after being in Italy, one of Europe’s hardest hit areas. Her promotions were canceled following the news.
Global health organizations continue to ask citizens to take the necessary precautions to help fight the virus. Avoid touching your face, wash your hands, and stay at home!

The weather finally warmed up and it’s time to start preparing some cool outfits for Spring/ Summer 2020. When you are finally ready to start going out, after staying home for a while, you should be on the lookout for these latest fashion trend pieces that Korean celebrities are loving. To make things easier, we’ve picked out the most wearable fashion trends that are simple enough to style and easy for everyone to pull off!
Leather Blazers
Leather jackets are popular year-round, but this Spring, leather blazers are getting the spotlight while the traditional leather moto jackets are looking a bit outdated. Quickly gaining popularity after actress Kim Dami’s appearance in a leather blazer in 2020’s hit K-Drama Itaewon Class, a leather blazer is now the new must-have item to add to your wardrobe. Style with casual outfits and bold chain jewelry like in the Korean models and idols’ #ootd.
Cropped Jackets
Seen on several runway shows, as well as Korean celebrities’ airport fashion photos, cropped jackets are in trend this season. This great transitional piece that can be layered and styled with shirts, dresses, or jeans. The best thing about this trend is that it really gives an elongating and slimming effect to your silhouette – guaranteed that your legs will look 10cm longer!
Puff Sleeves
Spring fashion is all about cute tops and dresses. This year, voluminous puff sleeves and puff shoulders are trending in these categories. Coming in all shapes, sizes, and colors, there are so many fun variations of puff sleeves available this season. Incorporating puff sleeves into your outfit will automatically elevate the look and add femininity to your style.
Bermuda Shorts
The Bermuda shorts have made a stylish comeback this year and are already being loved by many Korean fashionistas. These knee-length shorts made appearances in the major luxury designer shows and we predict that this trend will blow up this summer. Try styling tailored Bermuda shorts with blazers for a modern classic look, or wear a trending vegan leather pair with t-shirts for a casual summer vacation look.
Oversized Blazers
This trend has been around for several seasons now, but it’s not going away anytime soon. Hottest Korean celebrities, including Lisa and Jennie from Blackpink are still loving their oversized blazers and showing them off on their Instagrams. One thing to note is that the blazer trend is evolving and they are just getting bigger and bigger each season, almost looking as if you borrowed your dad’s blazer, and that’s chic. It’s such a versatile piece – you can style it in a more classy, formal outfit or dress it down with t-shirts and sweatshirts to give off a more “cool girl vibe” like the K-pop stars.

Would you briefly introduce yourselves to our readers?
Wondae: Hello, this is Wondae, the sexy, oldest member and leader of DONGKIZ.
Kyoungyoon: Hi, I am the manly guy, Kyoungyoon.
Munik: Hi, I am Munik – 20-year-old member of DONGKIZ
Jaechan: Hello, I am Jaechan, a legal adult this year at age 20!!
Jonghyeong: Hello, I am Jonghyeong, the Maknae.
Please enlighten us on what “DONGKIZ” means.
Wondae: DONGKIZ is a group of 5 men who know how to have a great time, in the east. Our chant is “From (Dong) East to the World,” which means we would expand our horizon from the east to the rest of the world.
How did you all end up in this band?
Wondae: When I was younger, I used to watch music shows and thought the performers look so cool. Because I wanted to be like them, I started auditioning and failed numerous times to get in. Thankfully, I learned a lot from the experience.
Kyoungyoon: When I was at school, I was inspired and consoled by a particular singer, so I started wanting to be like that in order to inspire and console others.
Munik: I got on stage for the first time after a teacher’s recommendation, and naturally got interested in performing… then it later became a dream.
Jaechan: I starting dreaming about being a singer because I found it amazing to be able to express my inner feelings through songs and other elements.
Jonghyeong: I watched a lot of performances while growing up. I began to follow their dances and singing – later enjoyed being on stage, so I started wanting to become an artist!
Tell us about what you’ve been up to most recently.
Wondae: We recently made a comeback with our latest single LUPIN. It’s an exciting song infused with old school Hip Hop and the choreography during the chorus is impressive. We’re currently doing radio djing, members Munik and Jaechan feature as variety panelists, as well as other various projects.
Tell us about your musical preference.
Wondae: I love all songs regardless of the genre. I love pop music, so I wanted to share the music with my voice with all the fans. I’m currently uploading my cover versions of pop music on DONGKIZ official YouTube site. I’ve become interested in Hip Hop recently, so I am doing rap covers and writing lyrics these days.
Kyoungyoon: R&B soul, Ballads, Rock Ballads – R&B got me interested in becoming a singer.
Munik: I try to expand on what I listen to, but I tend to listen to a lot of dance music, tropical sound, and funky sound that are upbeat.
Jaechan: I listen to Hip Hop, and at times, Lo-fi music.
Jonghyeong: I listen to a variety of different music from Hip Hop, R&B, to dance music that are rhythmical, moody and various upbeat music, because I believe they can somewhat change the listener’s mood.
What song or album are you listening to the most frequently?
Wondae: These days, I am listening to a lot of Ariana Grande and Lizzo’s music. I am a fan of Ariana Grande and even went to her concerts, I especially love her song called Jason’s Song. The piano tune, rhythmical melody, and lyrics like ‘bargain sale’ is addicting and attractive.
Kyoungyoon: Sam Smith-Stay with me.
Munik: Tones and I – Dance Monkey. I initially started listening because their vocals were unique but I’m currently listening to it frequently because I find the sound attractive.
Jaechan: Justin Bieber – Changes. Since I respect Justin Bieber, I listen to his album often.
Jonghyeong HONNE – Day 1, Alessia Cara – Here.
Which singer/artist do you respect the most?
Wondae: Bruno Mars and Beyoncé are role models that I was the most inspired by. The way they conduct themselves on stage and how they evolve endlessly are really what I should be taking after. One time, I watched them perform all day, from early morning until the evening. It felt good when I imagined myself singing on stage like that. If given the chance, I would love to work with them.
Kyoungyoon: Park Hyo-shin sunbaenim. He’s the driving force behind why I dreamt of becoming a singer!
Munik: I love BTS sunbaenims. I love how they all dance differently, yet, as a group, they look so unified. I also really want to emulate the fact they think about their fans so much.
Jaechan: I started music after listening to Justin Bieber’s music.
Jonghyeong: Dean, Penomeco, and HONNE. I respect them because each artist has defined characteristics and I like how they do music according to their own styles.
Which color/shade suits your voice the best?
Wondae: Probably Black & White… I think my voice goes well with jazzy and R&B songs well. When I sing songs by Michael Buble or John Legend, people around have said that my voice matches well with their songs.
Kyoungyoon: Grey. The reason is, it’s not too bright or dark and gives off a feeling of comfort because it’s in-between.
Munik: I would say white for my voice. It goes well with any vocals and I want people to hear clear and comfortable sound of my voice.
Jaechan: Purple. I like its dream-like feeling it gives.
Jonghyeong: Blue? I think it’s a color that gives good feeling. I would like my voice to be memorable and likeable when people hear it.
What’s your fav food and beverage?
Wondae: There isn’t any food that I can’t eat or dislike. It’s really a blessing that I can like and eat anything. I am especially in a great mood when I eat meat. Whenever I eat meat and Coke together, it’s like the best day ever for me.
Kyoungyoon: Strawberry smoothie… and meat!
Munik: I eat a lot of noodle-type foods and Sujebi, so I’m into flour-based foods the best. As for beverages, I love sweet drinks or fruit juice.
Jaechan: Milkshakes. I got really into them after tasting a milkshake once.
Jonghyeong: Tteok-bokki, Iced Americano, and Mate tea.
What are your hobbies or interests?
Wondae: I love searching for great songs. When I am at a café searching for songs, the time flies by so quickly. I hate being in a stuffy place so listening to songs while taking walks freely is a way of releasing stress for me.
Kyoungyoon: Listening to a song that I like, watching movies, working out and writing lyrics.
Munik: I recently starting gaming. I starting playing because it got me away from all the heavy thinking.
Jaechan: I look up videos of youtubers who travel the world, because it is my dream to travel the world as well.
Jonghyeong: Taking walks while listening to music, watching dramas or movies, and reading books. I release stress while taking walks because I can somehow feel free from doing it. I also watch dramas or movies because I can then concentrate on that and think less of distracting things. I love getting consolation from reading books and becoming both emotional and rational from doing so.
Name any books, movies or dramas that you’ve enjoyed recently.
Wondae: It’s not something that I watched recently, but The Devil Wears Prada is a move that I watch regularly. It might seem like a movie about just fashion but it is about a life struggle of a newbie at work. Due to the competition within the company and amount of work, the main character changes and has less time for her friends. I think the movie deals well with what young people go through in life or will go through in the future.
Kyoungyoon: It’s okay since it’s your first time living (처음 살아보니까 그럴 수 있어–요적) is a book about social issues from the animals’ perspective.
Munik: I haven’t been able to watch or read anything recently but I would like to watch Parasite the movie because I heard that the acting and black humor leave a great impression.
Jaechan: It wasn’t recent, but I remember enjoying WALL-E!!
Jonghyeong: Drama: When the Camellia Blooms. Book: Walking Man (걷는 사람, 하정우) by Ha Jung-woo. When the Camellia Blooms could be a real-life story and I really enjoyed watching the characters overcome hardships. And I enjoyed the books because I could find answers and consolation from reading it.
Tell us about your future plans and goals.
Wondae: We’re trying to achieve things that we haven’t been able to in the past. Please stay with us since we have much to show you! You’ll be able to see a new side from us!
Kyoungyoon: We’re doing well as a group, but it is our goal to mature into globalized artists. My personal goal is to be recognized through my music and give inspiration to the people as I have been when I was at school.
Munik: I will try to become a multi-talented idol, whom everyone can enjoy watching on stage.
Jaechan: We want to work hard to make it to the Billboard Chart like BTS sunbaenims.
Jonghyeong: As a team and an individual, there is so much we have yet to showcase, and have a lot to develop, so it is my goal to evolve!
Let’s wrap this up by adding nice comments for the fans!
Wondae: Aris! You know we are one, right? Please stay healthy and safe! Love you, all!
Kyoungyoon: There’s so much room for improvement, but I will continue to develop and evolve! Aris, thank you for being there whenever we’re tired out and weary!
Munik: We’re nearly in our first anniversary since debut, we’ll try to always make you smile and be happy when you see us! Stay with us!
Jaechan: Thank you for supporting us and please wear a mask in this coronavirus pandemic! Please support our latest single, LUPIN as well ~~
Jonghyeong: Thank you so much for all the continued love and support. We will try to become singers that can repay your love! Thank you ~❤

With COVID-19 dominating the news due to the virus’ global spread, many take news of the virus seriously. For many with family members with compromised immune systems, even joking about having the virus is somewhat of a touchy subject and no laughing matter.
On April 1, 2020, singer Jaejoong (TVXQ, JYJ) initially worried fans when he posted on social media that he is currently in the hospital with COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus).
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Jaejoong said:
I have been infected with COVID-19. It is a result of my negligence, ignoring the cautionary words shared by the government and those around me.
A person’s individual actions can have such a big impact on society as a whole. I am so sorry to those who may have been infected because of me.
My foolish judgment to live as though it couldn’t happen to me is why I am like this today. I am currently hospitalized. I am reflecting on my past a lot and feeling both grateful and sorry.
There are many things I want to say. There are many people I want to see so much.
As news spread and his agency, CJeS Entertainment, stated they were investigating the matter as the star is in Japan, Jaejoong once again posted on social media, this time to state his initial post was an April Fool’s Day joke.
What if the people we love, someone precious to us, contracted the virus?
It’s such a heart-wrenching thing to think about.
Despite this, so many people walk the streets and live their lives without their guards up, ignoring it… and thinking it won’t happen to them, and it makes me so worried that my family and friends might get sick. Believing that we and the people around us will be safe will end up making us and everything around us sick.
Currently, a growing number of my acquaintances and industry representatives are being tested positive. It is not something that is far away.
When negligence turns a sad premonition into reality, it’s not something that we can simply end by wiping our tears away.
Staying on alert right now.. That is what I say to myself again and again.
Although this did go quite far for April Fool’s Day, so many people worried about me in a short span of time.
Oh… and I don’t think of this as an April Fool’s joke. My family and my friends are getting sick.. and dying.. It’s never!! just someone else’s problem. I wanted to tell you that protecting myself is protecting the precious people around us.
I will accept all punishment I receive from this post. I hope all of you are healthy.
While the initial post saw an outpouring of well wishes, the admittance that the story was fake and his explanation fell flat with fans who called the star out on his poor joke taste and caused the hashtag #Jaejoongisoverparty to trend on Twitter. The backlash caused him to post another apology.
I am also personally aware that it was something that shouldn’t be done.
First, over the social media post I wrote, I want to express my sincere apologies to the people who have suffered because of COVID-19 and to the people who were disrupted in their administrative work.
Bad judgment. I knew that’s what this was.
The current lack of awareness of response methods and the dangerousness of the virus outbreak.
I wanted to convey that message because I hoped that people would be more aware and therefore, we could minimize the number of people who suffer because of COVID-19.
It’s so scary to think that things like people spending time outside in the warm weather as spring arrives, or coming in contact with others in an enclosed space while making use of leisurely time as the start of the semester is postponed, could cause a secondary or tertiary resurgence in COVID-19 cases.
My father also recently had lung cancer surgery and he went to the hospital often.
When I saw the medical staff and patients at the hospital, I felt a bit angry and I wished that people thought of the virus as not someone else’s problem, but their own problem.
Contrary to the people who actually are working hard to get us out of COVID-19, there are many people who enjoy their leisure time while dressing just as usual and not wearing a mask. When I heard that, I thought there needed to be more awareness.
In many different kinds of media and on the internet, there are both big and small requests for people to take caution, but there are people who do not listen to that, and I wanted to convey the dangerousness of the current situation to them one way or another. “Please, listen. Please. Don’t get sick.”
There are also confirmed cases among the people I know. This made me feel certain that this is not something that is happening far away, and it made me more scared.
Self-reflecting after losing someone is no help at all.
It’s frustrating and hard but I want to try a bit harder than now and get through this difficult time together. My post today… it went very far, but I thought that if people paid a large amount of interest to it, then they might listen. This method has hurt a lot of people and I am receiving criticism for it.
For causing distress, I sincerely apologize to the government agencies and medical professionals who are working hard because of COVID-19 and to the many people who are following instructions to give up on their lifestyles and are doing all they can to overcome this.
Jaejoong’s Instagram account was also temporarily unavailable.
Jaejoong’s post caused a domino effect that prompted the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) to respond regarding a potential punishment for spreading false information.
“We are currently looking into the case regarding Kim Jaejoong,” a KCDC representation said. “It involves the spreading of false information, so we’re discussing how exactly the punishment will be carried out.”
The representative continued, “It’s possible to punish those who are reported for inciting disorder by continually making malicious prank phone calls to the epidemic prevention authorities, however this case is something done by a celebrity on social media, and so it seems more internal discussion is required.”
Star News reports that there is a current Blue House petition asking for Jaejoong to be punished for his tasteless joke. According to Soompi, Star News states “if someone deceives a government employee or institution and therefore disrupts the performance of their duties, they could face a maximum of five years in prison or a fine of a maximum of 10 million won (approximately $8,090). This act is referred to as an ‘obstruction of performance of official duties by fraudulent means.’”
Since the controversy, Jaejoong has canceled various appearances in Japan including NHK Radio’s Furuya Masayuki’s PopA and TV Asahi’s Music Station. In Korea, there are discussions regarding if his show Travel Buddies will be halted.
Unfortunately, this isn’t Jaejoong’s first rodeo with tasteless April Fool’s Day pranks as he pulled pranks involving fake marriage news and fainting on stage. Hopefully, with some reflection, he’ll realize some things aren’t worth the joke.
