KCON:TACT 2020 – the virtual K-pop festival will return in fall of this year, after garnering almost 5 million viewers from 153 global regions in its previous summer fest. KCON is undeniably one of the largest K-pop events in the world since its creation in 2012.

KCON:TACT 2020 Fall will begin from October 16th until 25th – for 10 days in total – airing from Mnet and its studio in Seoul, South Korea – and the online concert will be streaming on Mnet K-pop’s YouTube channel.

This will make it convenient for everyone who is a K-pop fan to tune in easily, especially during the season of COVID-19 pandemic. KCON’s annual In-person concert was cancelled this year, and may be discontinued to be held in the future.

“This year has been an amazing opportunity for us to accelerate our experimentation with the latest technology,” CJ ENM stated. “We can’t be together at our in-person events, but we are proud that we have created a virtual world where fans can get that amazing artist interaction they can expect from KCON. KCON has served as a vanguard for promoting Korean culture to the world so far, so it will provide new experiences of K-culture contents to Hallyu fans around the world even in the era of the Untouch. Since it is a difficult time to perform overseas, I hope it will be time for artists and fans to get closer through ‘KCON:TACT 2020 Fall’.”

CJ ENM will be using new technology to enhance viewers’ experiences through upgraded AR devices like holograms, multi-view feeds, and sound technology which will increase fan interaction with artists through audience participation events.

Could you introduce yourself to K-hiphop international fans, with some behind stories on your rap name, ‘V1NO’?

Hello, my name is V1NO. A 2nd generation Korean-American K-hiphop artist. As an artist I struggled with a lot of doubt and found myself constantly anxious to get things done instead of focusing on myself as an artist first. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t rush the process (music) but that I should trust it instead. On saying that, “V1NO” means wine in Italian, and just like wine my music will only get better with time. The “1” in V1NO represents my mindset to do my best in all things, my acknowledgment that there is 1 God, and the fact that no matter what, you should always try 1 more time.

As ‘Paul Shin’ living in New York, people find you in a unique background as the second generation of U.S. immigrants. Could you introduce your lifetime events with the most powerful impact, that made your music special, absorbed in your songs.

As a 2nd generation immigrant, I think a lot of us try our best to bear the burden and struggles of our 1st generation immigrant parents.  As an immigrant residing in NY, as diverse as it may be, it is still full of the struggles of stereotypes and racism. But the experiences that come with being an immigrant has given me a rollercoaster of emotions (pain, joy, pride, sorrow, etc) and with these experiences it has definitely led me to embody and convey all of this into a Korean-American outlet which is K-HipHop. This exact artform represents who I truly am a Korean-American that shares his experiences of joy, sadness, pain, pride, and more with the world.

Lyrics of your new song “Me, Myself, & I” shows your strong will to stay on your own, as yourself. Looking into your previous songs, they also contain lyrics to stay intact regardless of agonies in life. How do you define your identity in music, as a self-portrait?

I define my identity in my art by embracing my emotions. These emotions can range anywhere from happiness to extreme sadness. Emotions are what fuel me to create genuine music. Every emotion I face, whether it be good or bad, it only inspires me to share that specific experience with the listener.

What was your previous job before being a rapper? What made you decide to become a K-rapper?

My last job was actually at an insurance company, but before that I was in school, and I actually didn’t fully start pursuing music until the start of 2019. Back in July of 2016, I received a call from one of my good Hyoung’s by the name of Albert Oh. He was the one to push me to pursue music. He himself, was also someone who experienced a similar crossroad. Albert was someone who gave up a successful position at Goldman Sachs to pursue his dreams of being a filmmaker. He encouraged me to do the same that summer night of 2016.

What was the happiest and most rewarding moment in your life with music, after starting Hiphop?

One of the most rewarding moments in my music career was when listeners and fans from all over the world began to direct message me via instagram telling me about how much they loved my songs as well as memorizing the lyrics. That’s when I knew I was doing something right.

Could you introduce your routine to work with new songs, or practice normally?

My routine is usually this: I will listen to a background track of an instrumental and if it gives me the right emotion and feeling, only then can I really start to create genuine art.

Screen Shot 2020 09 10 At 3.43.24 PM

How was Paul Shin like as a student? Were you a model student in class, or a free spirit by nature?

I think before I began pursuing music my studies were my passion. I am a very goal-oriented person when I have a target to aim for, and so when i was a student my studies were my #1 priority as i studied to excel in my academics, that was until i started pursuing music.

While traveling to other cities in Korea, which city do you like the most?

The last time I visited Korea was at 5 years old. I think the most memorable times I had was when I used to spend time in the countryside of my mother side of town. (Jungmun-1 li, Gaeun-eup, Mun-Kyeong, Gyeongsang-bukdo, South Korea)

Which place do you like to stay the most; a quiet & idyllic countryside, or busy & bustling city?

I am a city person at heart. I love a lot of bright lights and being surrounded by people. It gives me a very cozy feeling.

Could you name any rapper who inspired you the most, regardless of nationality?

The artist that really gives me a lot of inspiration would be between dean and Zion-t. The reason being is that these artists make art into a very unique perspective of how they tell their story as well as talking about deeper issues at hand.

Which Korean artist would you most like to collaborate with?

If I could collaborate with 1 korean artist it would have to be between DEAN or ZION T. I think they’re both very unique in the way they express themselves and the subjects they talk about is very meaningful. To have a chance to even be a part of their songwriting process would be a good opportunity.

What do you pick as the charming point of K-Hiphop for international fans to enjoy?  What is your favorite K-Hiphop song of all time?

I think the biggest charm to international fans is to connect the bridge of 2 different cultures through the medium of hiphop. My favorite K-hiphop song would probably be “INSTAGRAM” by DEAN. This would be definitely my favorite because of the honest, vulnerable and relatable subjects he talks about in that song.

Is your everyday life going through any changes in 2020, with COVID 19?

2020 from March onwards has definitely been a little tough to adjust. My day to day schedule for post covid activities are almost all done indoors. I have been even more strict when it comes to quarantining because I am currently living with my parents and I do not want to expose myself or them to the COVID.

As you prepare to launch new songs & albums further, which style or messages you hope to represent in your new work? Please give us a brief sketch of your next step.

I have a lot of new music coming out very soon! I think, again, I am an artist that is inspired by the impact of my emotions, so therefore with each season I tend to convey different emotions. On saying that, I have some projects for each current and upcoming seasons ( current summer, fall, winter and so on)

Could you give any advice for kids dreaming to be a rapper?

My advice to any upcoming/aspiring rappers is to be as authentic and genuine as possible. True followers and listeners will gravitate towards honest artists.

Any unique & special method to endure hard and stressful times?

Yes, I put everything into my music. Music is literally my form of therapy. If I feel bad or sad I put it into music and sooner or later something positive comes out of all my negative situations.

Do you have any special dreams and ambitions along the way of life with music, such as stages to appear, or record to achieve?

I think my biggest dream is for many people to be able to recognize my art and become believers of my music. Everything that comes from that is just a bonus for me.

Screen Shot 2020 09 10 At 3.43.34 PM

Last question-please leave any words or messages to your new international fans here.

I would love for them to know that I make music for them. Life is beautiful and sad all at the same time and I would love to share this with my new listeners.

Powerful Typhoon hits South Korea

Typhoon Maysak is forecasted to be one of the most powerful typhoons to ever hit South Korea – it’s currently moving towards Jeju early this Wednesday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Maysac was moving at 22 kph some 370 kilometers south of Jeju as of 6 a.m. Its maximum speed was 47 meters per second with an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals – being categorized as a strong intensity typhoon.

The agency said that Maysak would cause more damages than Typhoon Bavi that hit Korea last week and was expected to follow a similar route as Typhoon Maemi that caused the second-highest property damage recorded in 2003.

Maysak is forecasted to pass through seas east of Jeju soon and arrive on the southern coast near Gyeongsang Province on Thursday. It is later expected to pass through to Busan and the eastern coastal cities.

They typhoon’s strength is expected to ease in the afternoon, but substantial damage is still expected as the inland is predicted to be under the influence of the typhoon.

The national weather agency warned of heavy rains and strong wind in many regions. Rainfall is forecast for all regions in South Korea and is possible the typhoon changes in strength and direction. With the typhoon approaching the country, a typhoon advisory has been placed in seas surrounding Jeju, which is to expand all over the country.

BTS tops the Billboard 100 with "Dynamite"

BTS are now the first South Korean act ever to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart – a day after winning four awards at the MTV Video Music Awards: Best Pop, Best Group, Best Choregraphy and Best K-pop for “ON.”

The K-pop band’s single “Dynamite” debuted at the top the chart with 33.9 million U.S. streams and 300,000 sold in its first week. It’s also the biggest digital sales week since Taylor Swift sold 353,000 units for “Look What You Made Me Do” back in September 2017.

Before this, the highest-charting Korean artist ever on the Hot 100 was PSY with his 2012 world-wide hit “Gangnam Style,” which peaked at the No. 2. And, the only Asian to make it to the top of the Hot 100 was Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto with “Sukiyaki” in 1963.

BTS released “Dynamite” on August 21 – breaking YouTube’s 24-hour streaming record with 101.1 million views on the first day.

The group performed “Dynamite” live for the first time during the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards broadcast on Sunday, August 30.

Who Will Be Abe's Successor?

People are waiting to see who will become Japan’s next prime minister since Shinzo Abe stepped down from the position citing health issues.

Former defense chief Shigeru Ishiba is Japan’s most popular candidate to be the next PM – with 34.3 percent of support – far outdoing other candidates. He is followed by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga with 14.3 percent, Defense Minister Taro Kono with 13.6 percent, Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi with 10.1 percent and LDP policy chief Fumio Kishida with 7.5 percent.

However, Ishiba’s chance of him winning the LDP presidential election (to take place in September) is not highly likely since he is not as popular with the party’s parliamentarians because he once left the LDP.

The 63-year-old former banker entered parliament at age 29, and is a 70’s pop music fan.

As results of the poll, “Leadership” was the most sought quality from the next prime minister at 25.7 percent, followed by “ability to give clear explanations to the public” at 25.4 percent, and “honesty and modesty” at 21.3 percent.

South Korea to restrict operations of Eateries

South Korea has decided to restrict operations of bakeries, restaurants and coffee places in the Seoul area from this weekend to lessen the fast spread of COVID-19.

This will take effect from this Sunday – restaurants and bakeries can operate until 9 p.m., while only delivery will be allowed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Customers cannot eat food at restaurants in Seoul after 9 p.m.

Seoul’s franchised coffee shops can only take delivery and take-out orders – this measure was due to the recent cluster infections related to coffee franchise stores.

This is set to last until September 6 (for 8 days), as the Korean government is making an effort to put a stop to rising virus cases.

South Korea’s health minister asked the public to cancel gatherings and stay home during the second wave of the coronavirus.

Kim Jong Un in a Coma

According to a former aide of South Korea’s late president Kim Dae-jung, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is currrently in a coma and his younger sister Kim Yo-jong will be ruling the nation in his place.

Chang Song-min – who served Kim Dae-jung as a political affairs secretary and as head of the state affairs monitoring office – expressed that no North Korean leader would entrust his authority to another unless he was too sick.

I assess him to be in a coma, but his life has not ended,” he told the media. “A complete succession structure has not been formed, so Kim Yo-jong is being brought to the fore as the vacuum cannot be maintained for a prolonged period.”

Kim has only been seen in public a few times this year after rumors spread that he was clinging to life in April due to a heart operation failure.

KCrush Interview With Rising Star - MAIL 1

For new international fans all over the world, could you introduce the meaning of your stage name, ‘MAIL’?

Hello, this is MAIL from Korea. I’m so glad to have a chance to send my greetings to you guys. MAIL came from that of E-MAIL, but the letter M stands for ‘music’. My stage name shows my hope to send great songs to everyone.

Your emotional voice is getting more widely known with TV programs such as <Voice Korea 2020>. What is the most valuable experience you remember to have from this competitive program?

I found everything there so new and fresh, first experience ever in life. The most impressive one was the blind audition; I can’t forget the feelings when coach Kim Jong-Kook turned his chair to give a ‘pass’.

What kind of story and emotion did you want to convey with your new album launched on May, “Fly High”?

The title song of this Album, “Fly High” is in alternative pop genre, with acoustic guitar melodies accompanied. This song contains hope, console and encouragement to everyone in the course of growth, with the message of ‘reflecting & loving myself’.

After the final episode of <Voice Korea> and recent comeback, how are your days like? Is there any special method of yours to relieve stress?

I am now preparing my new song release on the last week of August. The new song will be a duet, which is quite new to me. Before I have featured on ‘Starry Night’ with Rapper Kim Soo Jin of ‘PAXCHILD’, or other songs of Rapper DK; but this is the first time I release a duet song.

When stressed, I go out for a drive. Listening to music that fits my feelings of that day, when I drive I forget all my worries and problems in that moment.

KCruch Interview With Rising Star - MAIL 5

What do you think you would have become if not a singer, something as a childhood dream?

I always dreamed to be a singer from my childhood, but in high school I thought about being a teacher in Day Care center-I like being with children so much! But I must have regretted, whatever way I choose instead of being a singer.

Four years after ‘THE ARK’ was disbanded, it was stated that you have gone through recovery within this period. What kind of activities gave you energy and resolution to restart as a solo artist?

All the performances I did, all the stages I made other than THE ARK group were solo stages. I feel like I always dreamed to be a solo artist. My current agency has recognized my dream, and we made in-depth discuss about re-debut as a solo artist. It was a bit challenging, but overcoming obstacles were part of my plans. I think all such resolutions gave birth to MAIL as I am now.

Solo concert where I can communicate with my fans is the main source of my energy. It gave me extreme excitement and realization about the true reason I always wanted to sing.

Are there any words you would want to say if you met yourself in childhood?

I was a timid and thoughtful child, so I missed a lot of chances in life. I want to tell little me to experience as many things as possible.

MAIL’s songs are known to convey strong emotion with beautiful & unique voice tones, how much do you emphasize to your songs’ lyrics when you actually sing?

Yes, I give weight to lyrics the most. Of course, when I practice, I need to polish details and technique more; but on stage I solely concentrate on lyrics. For me music is not about showing off, but about sharing emotions.

Could you give 3 songs of other artists you enjoy listening, or would recommend?

Recently, when I was competing in <The Voice Korea>, I browsed all the songs of coach Kim Jong-Kook. Among all of his songs, three most noteworthy songs are <One Man>, <It’s this person> and <Letter>. It is comfortable to listen to, but for singers Kim Jong-Kook’s songs are extremely difficult to sing.

Are there any episodes with, or comments from international fans you keep in mind?

When I performed on stage, I got so many international fans from far away. I thank them so much for coming to see me only; but on top of that, they learned Korean and tried to speak with me in my native language! We have the same hope to communicate, and It must’ve been difficult for them to learn different language. I was so touched to find their effort for me.

What is your favorite movie genre?  Are there any movies that gave you inspiration to sing with emotion?

I love romance movies-my favorite is <About Time>. Every time I watch it I find new attractive aspects of it.  When I sing, if the lyric is about things I haven’t experienced before, I recall feelings I had while watching movies.

What is the favorite line from your solo album song lyrics?

I like the line in ‘Fly High’, saying ‘Yesterday I was afraid of opening eyes every morning, but today I am ready to fly’. It represents MAIL as a solo artist on the start line; also it gives power and hope to people just like me.

You’re actively & successfully running your Youtube channel with cover song videos. if you ever have plans to upload special contents on your own, what would it be?

I think high note is my strongest point. So, I think if I create ‘Defeat MAIL with higher note’ competition with amateur challengers, it can be memorable and interesting.

What is your favorite dish among Korean food? One menu you would recommend to your international fans?

I love Kimchi Stew; love the spicy taste, scent of garlic in harmony with Kimchi and hot rice. I strongly recommend this menu to my international fans!

In spite of COVID 19 in the year 2020, seems like MAIL is getting more active & ready to fly higher. Could you give some hints about your next steps and activities?

I get my new song released on August 31st. This duet song is with sweet melody! Before I used to sing tragic songs with breakup scenes; sweet romance could’ve been awkward… but my counterpart has such a sweet voice, making our duet even more touchy. Please look forward to the new release!

What do you dream to achieve as a solo artist, the biggest dream you have?

My biggest dream is to continue music work for long, communicating with my fans. This does not seem big enough, but in fact it’s the most difficult one to achieve. I have to put all my heart, unchanging heart to my music for long run. I hope to be happy with my music and my fans for so long. 🙂

Could you leave any words or messages to your fans here, waiting for your new albums and activities?

After THE ARK disbanded, I made a late comeback after a 4 year-long break.  Thank you so much for waiting for me and supporting me as always. I will try to reward your precious support and expectations, with more activities, beautiful music and more active communication with you all.

Thank you for your love and support, I love you all❤️
