Big Ocean is K-Pop industry’s first deaf and hard-of-hearing band that has gained global accolades for its top-notch musical pieces and performances. KCrush America Magazine had a conversation with the talented trio to get to know them better.
You all had different jobs before becoming Big Ocean. How did you meet and why the name ‘Big Ocean’?
Chanyeon: Before debuting, we each had different paths—Hyunjin was a content creator raising awareness about hearing disabilities, I worked as an audiologist, and Jiseok was a competitive alpine skier. We all had unique experiences, but what brought us together was our passion for music and the opportunity to express ourselves in a way that felt meaningful.
Hyunjin: We met through Parastar Entertainment. The name ‘Big Ocean’ represents something vast, deep, and limitless—just like music and sign language, which connect people across different backgrounds.
Jiseok: There’s also a deeper meaning to the name. Underwater, divers communicate using signs because verbal language doesn’t work there. Similarly, sign language is a natural and universal form of communication that transcends barriers. We want our music to be like the ocean—welcoming, boundless, and a space where people can find their own rhythm.
What is your song recording process like and how do you synchronize with the music and stay on beat when performing live?
Hyunjin: Recording songs is always an exciting challenge for us. Since we have different hearing abilities, we use a combination of methods to ensure we stay in sync with the rhythm. During recording sessions, we rely heavily on vibrations, visual cues, and metronomes to guide our timing. We also work closely with our producers to fine-tune our vocal delivery and make sure our emotions come through in the song.
Chanyeon: Performing live requires a lot of teamwork and trust. We use vibrating smartwatches that act as metronomes to help us feel the beat, and we take cues from each other and the stage lighting. The bond we’ve built as a group plays a huge role in how well we synchronize on stage—we’ve learned to communicate instinctively.
Jiseok: Another important factor is the energy from our fans. We recently introduced performance start signals and fanchant guides to help the audience engage with our shows. Seeing their excitement and feeling their support gives us an extra boost of confidence, making every performance even more special!
The ‘FLOW’ track, from the ‘Follow’ EP is such a blast with powerful lyrics and vibe. What’s the message behind the song?
Chanyeon: ‘FLOW’ is about finding your own rhythm in life and embracing the journey with trust and confidence. The song encourages people to let go of fear and move forward naturally, like the flow of water.
Hyunjin: More than just a song, ‘FLOW’ is also our love letter to PADOs. It carries the message that we’re all on this journey together, and no matter where life takes us, we’re connected through music. We wanted PADOs to feel that sense of freedom, warmth, and encouragement when they listen to it.
Jiseok: Filming the ‘FLOW’ music video at the National Institute for Deaf Youth in Paris made the song even more meaningful for us. Being in a place with such deep history in the Deaf community reminded us of the importance of inclusivity and communication. Through this song we hope to inspire others to move forward with confidence, knowing that every step they take is part of their own unique path.
You’ve done several performances, including internationally. How do fans, both deaf and hearing, engage with your performances?
Hyunjin: One of the most beautiful things about our performances is how both Deaf and hearing fans experience them in their own way. Some fans follow along with our sign language choreography, while others connect through the music and energy of the stage.
Chanyeon: We also encourage the audience to engage actively. During our fan meetings and concerts, we introduce performance start signals and fan chant guides so PADO can feel more involved. Seeing fans, regardless of their hearing ability, sign along, cheer, and move with the music makes every stage feel even more special.
Jiseok: Music is about connection, and it goes beyond sound. The energy, the visuals, the rhythm—we want everyone to feel included. Whether through vibrations, visuals, or movement, we hope our performances create an experience where everyone can enjoy music together.
Fans are going crazy over your latest “brighT” addictive single. What was the first idea or feeling that sparked the creation of this song?
Chanyeon: ‘brighT’ was created as part of SK Telecom’s Happy AI Coding Challenge 25th anniversary, with its lyrics written by two students with intellectual disabilities using AI-assisted tools. From the very beginning, the song carried a powerful message of hope and perseverance, and we wanted to bring that message to life through our voices.
Hyunjin: When we first heard the lyrics, we were amazed by how they captured determination and optimism so beautifully. The song speaks about chasing dreams, embracing challenges, and never giving up, which resonated with us deeply.
Jiseok: The melody is uplifting and energetic, making it even more special. Knowing that ‘brighT’ was created through collaboration, inclusivity, and technology, we felt honored to be part of something so meaningful. The first idea behind this song was simple—to remind everyone that their light can shine bright, no matter what obstacles come their way.
What keeps you going despite the industry challenges?
Hyunjin: More than anything, our love for music and performance keeps us going. There are difficult moments, but every time we step on stage, we remember why we started. The connection we have with PADO gives us the strength to keep moving forward.
Chanyeon: The support from our fans and team motivates us. Knowing that our music reaches people, inspires them, and even encourages some to learn sign language makes every challenge worth it.
Jiseok: We also remind ourselves that every step forward, no matter how small, is still progress. Challenges come and go, but our journey with Big Ocean is something we cherish. As long as we have music, our message, and PADO by our side, we’ll keep pushing forward.
What are some of the memorable feedback you have received from fans?
Hyunjin: One of the most touching messages I’ve received was from a fan who said that our music gave them strength during a difficult time. Knowing that our songs can bring comfort and encouragement makes everything we do feel even more meaningful.
Chanyeon: A fan once shared that they started learning sign language because of us. That was really special because it shows that our music isn’t just about sound—it’s about connection. Seeing people embrace sign language and make efforts to communicate inclusively is incredibly heartwarming.
Jiseok: A moment I’ll never forget was seeing fans sign along with us during a performance. Whether they are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or hearing, PADO finds ways to express their support in a way that makes us feel truly connected. It reminds us that music is something that can be felt in many different ways.
As the first deaf K-pop group, what has been the biggest challenge in establishing yourselves in such a competitive industry?
Hyunjin: One of the biggest challenges was changing perceptions. Some people had doubts about whether a Deaf and Hard of Hearing group could succeed in the industry, but we wanted to prove that music is more than just sound—it’s about emotion, expression, and connection.
Chanyeon: Synchronization was also something we had to approach differently. Since we all have different hearing abilities, we developed our own methods, like using vibrating smartwatches, visual cues, and strong teamwork to stay in sync during performances. It was a challenge at first, but it became one of our strengths.
Jiseok: Another challenge was making sure that our performances were accessible to everyone, both Deaf and hearing audiences. We worked hard to integrate sign language naturally into our choreography so that our music could be experienced visually as well. Seeing how people have embraced this has been incredibly rewarding.
What’s one thing that fans are yet to learn about each of you?
Hyunjin: I’ve been really passionate about learning English lately. I even bought the entire Harry Potter series in English, but… I haven’t actually started reading it yet! (laughs)
Chanyeon: People often think I’m very outgoing because of my performances, but I’m actually quite introverted. I love spending time alone, especially at cafés, just enjoying the quiet.
Jiseok: I’ve been working hard on my fitness recently, especially my abs. It’s a personal goal of mine, and let’s just say… it’s still a work in progress! (laughs)

You already have several confirmed performances for 2025. What should fans be expecting?
Hyunjin: We’re thrilled to have a busy year ahead, starting with our first solo concert, ‘Follow’ in Toyota City, Japan, on March 9th. It’s a special milestone for us, and we’re working hard to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone attending.
Chanyeon: We’ll also be performing at Polymanga 2025 in Lausanne, Switzerland, in April, followed by the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, in July, and the K-Pop Revolution Festival in Mainz, Germany, also in July. Each of these events is a great opportunity for us to connect with more fans around the world.
Jiseok: Fans can expect new performances, fresh arrangements of our songs, and even more engagement with PADOs. We’re always looking for ways to bring our music to life in a way that everyone can feel and experience together. We can’t wait to meet you all!
What does the future hold for Big Ocean?
Hyunjin: We want to keep growing as artists and sharing our music with more people. We’ve already taken big steps this year, and we hope to continue expanding our sound and message to reach even more listeners worldwide.
Chanyeon: Our journey is still unfolding, and we’re excited about the possibilities ahead. We’ll continue to explore new musical styles, improve our performances, and find new ways to connect with PADO.

HYBE, BTS and SEVENTEEN’s agency, has announced plans to launch a U.S.-based boy group. The powerhouse is partnering with Grammy-winning producer Ryan Tedder and the reputable music executive Scooter Braun, who is also HYPE America’s CEO, marking HYBE’s global expansion stance.
The upcoming boy group will be developed under HYBE America. The team will blend K-pop training system and Western music influences. Ryan Tedder, has worked with artists like Adele while Braun has worked with artists like Justin Bieber and CL.

1. You all started as producers for Gaho’s solo projects. At what moment did you decide to step into the spotlight as a full-fledged band?
모두 가호의 솔로 프로젝트의 프로듀서로 시작하셨어요. 어느 순간 본격적인 밴드로서 주목을 받기로 결심하게 되었나요?
답변 : 처음부터 밴드로서 활동하고자 하는 계획 하에 모인 것은 아니었습니다. 가호와 함께 자연스럽게 작업하면서 서로의 취향과 스타일을 이해하게 되었고, 우리만의 색깔을 가진 음악을 만들고 싶다는 확신이 들었습니다. 그게 곧 밴드 KAVE가 되었어요.
Answer: When we first got together, there wasn’t exactly a plan to start acting as a band. While working with Gaho we came to understand each other’s tastes and styles, and realized for sure that we wanted to make music of our very own colors. That was how KAVE the band began.
2. How have your experiences as producers shaped your approach to creating music as performers?
프로듀서로서 경험이 연주자로서 음악 제작 방식에 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?
답변 : 프로듀서로서의 경험 덕분에 사운드의 디테일과 편곡에 대한 감각이 자연스럽게 길러졌어요. 연주자로서 무대에서 어떻게 들릴지, 관객들에게 어떤 감정을 전달할 수 있을지를 생각하면서 곡을 구성하게 되었죠. 덕분에 라이브에서도 우리의 사운드를 보다 정교하게 조율할 수 있는 것 같아요.
Answer: Thanks to our experience as producers we could cultivate a natural sense of the details and arranging of sound. As performers we composed pieces thanking how they would sound on the stage, and what emotions they would convey to our audience. We’re also able to get down to the minute details for our sound in live performances.
3. Your music blends rock, alternative, and electronic elements. How would you describe KAVE’s signature sound?
KAVE 음악은 록, 얼터너티브, 일렉트로닉 요소가 혼합되어 있어요. KAVE 시그니처 사운드를 어떻게 설명하시겠어요?
답변 : 저희는 록과 전자음악을 기반으로 하지만 전통적인 밴드 사운드에서 벗어나 다양한 장르를 융합해요. 클래식 음악이나 월드 뮤직 같은 요소를 자연스럽게 섞어 저희만의 스타일을 만들어가고 있죠. 또한 폭넓은 레인지의 보컬을 통해 표현하는 감정적으로 강렬하면서도 다채로운 사운드가 우리의 시그니처라고 할 수 있어요.
Answer: Our music is based on rock and electronic, but we merge various genres beyond the traditional band sound. We create our own style by mixing in classical or world music. We’d say that an emotionally powerful and varied sound, expressed through a wide spectrum of vocals, is our signature.
4. You recently marked a major milestone with your first concert, ‘Say My Name’. What was the most unforgettable moment of the show?
최근에 첫 번째 ‘Say My Name’ 콘서트로 중요한 이정표를 달성했어요. 그 공연에서 가장 잊을 수 없는 순간은 무엇인가요?
답변 : 국내뿐만 아니라 해외 다양한 곳에서 와주신 관객들을 통해 우리의 음악이 누군가에게 닿았다는 걸 실감할 수 있었죠. 관객들 한 분 한 분이 저희를 연호해 주실 때가 제일 기억에 남는 것 같습니다.
Answer: Our audience was from not only Korea but overseas, and through all of those people it became real for us that our music had actually touched someone. The most memorable moment was when every single one of them cheered and chanted our name.
5. “You” and “Stone” double title tracks for the ‘Say My Name’ 2nd mini album have gone viral. What is the inspiration and creative process of these tracks?
‘Say My Name’ 두 번째 미니앨범의 더블 타이틀곡 “You”와 “Stone”이 큰 인기를 끌고 있어요. 이 두 트랙의 영감과 창작 과정은 무엇인가요?
답변 : “You”는 감정적으로 깊은 곡으로, 후회와 그리움에 대한 이야기를 담고 있어요. 반면 “Stone”은 강렬한 에너지를 표현하며 우리 내면의 또 다른 모습을 이야기하죠. 두 곡 모두 우리의 음악적 색깔을 담아내기 위해 저희의 기억들을 활용함과 동시에 다양한 편곡 스타일을 실험하면서 작업했습니다.
Answer: The track “You” is a deeply emotional song about regrets and longing after someone. “Stone” on the other hand gives off an intense energy and tells about the other person inside of us. Both tracks utilized our memories and are the result of our experimenting with different arrangement styles, so as to contain our musical colors.
6. You have done music productions for other groups and drama OSTs. How does working on other projects differ from making your own band’s music?
다른 그룹과 드라마 OST 음악 제작을 한 적이 있어요. 다른 프로젝트 작업은 자신의 밴드 음악을 만드는 것과 어떤 차이가 있나요?
답변 : 다른 프로젝트를 할 때는 그 아티스트나 드라마의 분위기에 맞춰야 하지만, 저희 음악을 만들 때는 100% 우리의 감성과 메시지를 담을 수 있어요. 그래서 KAVE의 음악을 만들 때 더 자유롭고 창의적인 시도를 많이 할 수 있는 것 같습니다.
Answer: When we work on other projects we have to accommodate and reflect the artist or the drama series or whatever, whereas making our own music we’re able to express our own feelings and messages. We are able to try things in a much more free and creative way.
7. If each member had to describe KAVE in one word, what would it be?
각 멤버가 KAVE 한 단어로 표현해야 한다면 무엇일까요?
Gaho : 그림자 같아요. Gaho가 희망, 빛을 이미지화 한다면, KAVE는 이와는 정반대의 이미지를 가지고 있거든요.
Gaho: The shade. If I as Gaho is a personified image of hope and light, KAVE is the opposite in imagery.
Kekinu : 하고 싶은 게 많은 친구들의 실험실이자 놀이터
Kekinu: The experiment lab and playground of friends, with a lot of things they wanna do.
Jisang : KAVE는 저에게 일대기 같아요. 제 어릴 적 꿈은 아티스트였는데, KAVE 덕분에 이미 저는 꿈을 이뤘네요. 저의 일대기는 이미 KAVE 멤버들과 시작되었습니다. 이건 정말 큰 행복이자 축복입니다.
Jisang: KAVE to me is like a saga. My dream as a kid was to become an artist, and through KAVE I’ve already realized my dream. My story has already begun with my band mates. It’s a huge blessing and happiness.
Hyun : 정말 좋아하는 형님이 해주신 말이 생각이 나는데요, 친한 사이란 별다른 게 아니라 ‘가장 자주 보는 사이’라는 말을 해주신 적이 있습니다. 가장 많이 만나는 게 저희 팀원들이다 보니, 저는 지음(知音) – 서로 소리를 알아주는 가까운 벗으로 표현하고 싶습니다.
Hyun: This reminds me of something a very close older friend told me. He said that a close bond is simply between people who see each other most often. Since I see my band mates more often than anyone else, I’d call our relationship as close friends of Jieum (knowing through sound).
Ownr : ‘퓨전 요리 식당’이라고 하고 싶습니다. 서로 많이 다른 사람들끼리 모여 식당을 차린 느낌. 그래서 가끔 이상한 요리도 나오지만 혁신적인 요리가 나오기도 하는 그런 식당이라고 표현하고 싶습니다.
Ownr: I think we’re like a fusion cuisine restaurant: Different people gathering to run a restaurant. The resulting food is strange sometimes but innovative too.
8. Your posts and music videos show a strong visual identity. How important is the visual aspect of KAVE’s artistry?
소셜 미디어 게시물과 뮤직 비디오에서 강한 시각적 아이덴티티를 보여줘요. KAVE 예술성에서 시각적인 측면이 얼마나 중요한가요?

Answer: Visual effects, not just music, are important in conveying our message. We work hard on our music videos, costumes and stage effects to convey the emotions and stories we want to tell, in a stronger manner. We want to thank our staff, for always working to achieve this with us.
9. Who or what inspires your stage performances and visual storytelling?
무대 공연과 시각적 스토리텔링에 영감을 주는 사람 또는 요소는 무엇인가요?
답변 : 공연을 할 때에는 Justin Bieber, Chris Brown 같은 아티스트들이 무대에서 보여주는 에너지를 많이 참고했습니다. 또한 A Clockwork Orange(시계 태엽 오렌지)와 같은 영화에서도 영감을 받아서 뮤직비디오 연출을 고안해낸 바 있습니다.
Answer: In terms of performing our go-to references are artists like Justin Bieber and Chris Brown. We also came up with music video structures inspired by films like A Clockwork Orange.
10. How do you think your 1st mini album, ‘Flight of Ideas’, shaped your identity as a band and prepared you for the ‘Say My Name’ second mini album?
첫 번째 ‘Flight of Ideas’ 미니 앨범은 밴드 정체성을 형성하기도 두 번째 ‘Say My Name’ 미니 앨범을 준비하기도 어떤 도움이 되셨나요?
답변 : ‘Flight of Ideas’는 우리가 하고 싶은 음악이 무엇인지 실험해 보는 과정이었어요. 덕분에 우리의 스타일을 구체화할 수 있었고, ‘Say My Name’에서는 그 스타일을 더 정리하고 확장할 수 있었습니다.
Answer: ‘Flight of Ideas’ was a process of experimenting with music, to find out what we really wanted to do. We could get more specific thanks to that, and refine and expand our style in ‘Say My Name’.
11. Where do you see KAVE in five years? What’s your ultimate goal as a band?
5년 후 KAVE 모습을 어떻게 전망하시나요? 밴드로서 궁극적인 목표는 무엇인가요?
답변 : 우리는 항상 변화하고 진화하는 밴드가 되고 싶어요. 5년 후에는 지금보다 더 다양한 음악을 시도하면서 세계적으로도 인정받는 밴드가 되어 있을 것 같아요. 궁극적으로는 우리만의 독창적인 음악과 공연으로 많은 사람들에게 영향과 감동을 주는 것이 목표입니다.
Answer: We want to be a band that’s always changing and evolving. Five years later we’d have tried even more variety of music, and hopefully established internationally. Our ultimate goal is to influence and touch many people by our very original music and performances.
12. What would you like to say to your supporters?
팬들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있으세요?
답변 : 항상 저희 음악을 사랑해 주고 응원해 주시는 모든 분들, 제작을 지원해 주시는 분들께 감사드립니다. 여러분 덕분에 우리가 존재할 수 있어요. 앞으로도 더 좋은 음악과 무대로 보답할 테니 향후 있을 공연들에서 만나길 기대하고 있겠습니다!

GENIC, a seven-member dance and vocal pop group from Japan with a mixed male and female lineup, have released their fourth album ‘if’ on Wednesday, February 5.
As the title suggests, the album embarks on a journey through a “what if” world through GENIC’s music, and is an entertaining collection of accessible “pop & cool” music that has become the group’s trademark.
The album contains 14 songs, two of which were used as theme songs for TV drama series and two more from commercials starring the members of GENIC themselves, along with an additional three hours of video content. Their music videos continue the “what if” theme, with the lyrics and visuals of ‘FUN! FUN! FUN!’ exploring a colorful miracle island, and ‘IT’S SHOWTIME’ showing a version of GENIC if they had been a 1990s J-pop group instead of starting in the modern era – truly a series of fun parallel worlds to enjoy.
The members of GENIC have been expanding their horizons through acting, writing, modeling and more. In 2024, Atsuki Mashiko appeared as Haku in the London production of the stage play adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s ‘Spirited Away’.

GENIC are a seven-member dance and vocal group from Japan with a mixed lineup of male and female members, who were selected from a development program hosted by avex titled a-genic PROJECT, aimed at discovering artists to inherit the legendary label’s DNA.
Their third album ‘N_G’ reached No.1 on the Oricon Daily Albums Chart in Japan when it was released in March 2024. The group have drawn over 50,000 fans to their live shows since their debut, and began their largest ever nationwide tour of Japan in September 2024, titled GENIC LIVE TOUR 2024 -if-. They will release their fourth album ‘if’ on February 5, 2025, and will also perform at the Nippon Budokan for the first time on November 5.
The seven members of GENIC – Atsuki Mashiko, Joe Nishizawa, Kakeru Amemiya, Maiki Nishimoto, Maria Kaneya, Ryuki Koike and Yurari Ui – are active in a wide range of disciplines beyond music, including acting, writing and modeling. ‘THE BEST 2020 – 2025’ sold over 1.1 million copies on its first day on sale, topping the Oricon Daily Album Ranking chart for January 21, 2025. Its first-week sales hit 1,395,000 copies, setting a new record for the highest first-week sales of Japan’s Reiwa Era (which began in 2019), according to the Oricon Weekly Album Ranking dated February 3, 2025, and based on the sales period of January 20 thru January 26, 2025. All five of Snow Man’s albums to date have sold over a million copies each, making it the first time in the history of the Oricon rankings that an artist has had their first five consecutive albums sell over a million copies, as well as setting the record for beating a million on the first day on sale.
‘THE BEST 2020 – 2025’ contains 61 songs, including brand new tracks, and 30 music videos including their videos to date and two new ones.
