What inspired you to play the gayageum and how has the journey been?
가야금을 연주하게 된 계기는 무엇이며 그 여정은 어땠나요?
A: My first encounter with a Gayageum was in elementary school, where we had Gayageum classes. I was mesmerized by the sound and went on to Art high school then Art college. There were several career choices after graduation, but I became a performer because playing the instrument meant the most joy for me.
I created a Gayageum ensemble called SET in 2014, and busked in various parts of Korea. We performed with artists of different genres, like the blues guitar, modern dancing, media art, perfumery, the handpan, etc.
Fron 2017 to 2020 I directed and performed my project as a individual, called “The Moment”, as well as various group creative works.
My discography includes the four formal albums “Start up”(2017), “100 days of Red(2017,2019)“, “The Moment(2019)”, “Improvisation-Speak in Harmony(2019)”, ”GAYAGEUM w/jazz(2024)”, as well as an EP and single albums.
– 초등학생때 학교 취미 수업과정에 가야금 수업이 있어 처음 접하게 되었고, 가야금 소리에 매료되어 예술고등학교, 예술대학교에 진학하게 되었습니다. 졸업 후 다양한 진로가 많았지만 그 중 연주하는것이 가장 즐거워서 쭉 연주자로 활동해왔습니다.
2014년 “가야금 앙상블 셋(Gayageum Ensemble “SET”)” 팀을 창단하여 대한민국 곳곳에서 가야금 버스킹 공연을 해왔고, 블루스 기타리스트, 현대무용가, 미디어 아티스트, 향 아티스트(조향사), 핸드팬 연주자 등 다양한 장르의 아티스트들과 협업공연을 이어왔습니다.
개인 프로젝트로 2017-2020년까지 4년간 시리즈로 작업한 ”순간은 순간(the Moment)” 공연을 제작, 발표하였고 그 외 다수의 그룹활동을 통한 창작작업을 해왔습니다.
발매한 앨범으로는 “Start up”(2017), ”백일홍-100 days of Red(2017,2019)“, “순간은 순간-the Moment(2019)”, “Improvisation-Speak in Harmony(2019)”, ”가야금으로 뜯는 재즈-GAYAGEUM w/jazz(2024)” 등 정규앨범 4장, EP 1장 및 싱글앨범 다수 발표하였습니다.
Your album ‘GAYAGEUM w/jazz’ is a remarkable fusion of traditional Korean music and jazz. What motivated you to explore this fusion?
‘GAYAGEUM w/jazz’ 앨범은 한국 전통음악과 재즈의 놀라운융합이 돋보이는 앨범입니다. 이러한 퓨전을 시도하게 된 동기는 무엇인가요?
A: I majored in Korean traditional music, but I’ve always been interested in other various musical genres too, and wanted to perform and create music.
I also wanted to publicize the Gayageum more, domestically and internationally. I tried to do so through a lot of busking performances in Korea and abroad. In the process, I thought about how to approach people who aren’t familiar with the Gayageum, including Koreans, in a more comforting, friendly and refreshing manner. Soon I came to focus on the impromptu nature of both Korean traditional music and jazz.
Both genres went through many stages of development in different periods, and still paving through and making new roads by the work of performers and creators. I pondered a lot about the energy that makes it possible for the two genres to keep going, and I concluded it might be their ever-changing form resulting from their impromptu nature.
For example, the subgenres of Korean traditional music, Sanjo and Shinawi, have set rhythms and formations, but countless new melodies are born innevery performance, through the creative impromptu playing of the musician.
This is akin to how jazz musicians play impromptu music of their own, departing from set forms and chord progressions, to make new music.
My album ”GAYAGEUM w/jazz” focuses on this common factor of the two genres, as it is an addition of impromptu melodies on the Gayageum to jazz standards, songs that have been loved throughout the ages.
– 저는 한국 전통음악을 전공하였지만 한국전통음악에 한정되지 않고 다양한 장르에 대한 관심을 가지며 연주, 창작활동을 하고자 하였습니다.
또한 한국 전통악기인 “가야금”을 국내외에 소개하고 싶어 국내, 해외에서 버스킹 공연을 많이 시도하였습니다. 그 과정에서 한국 사람들에게도 생소한 가야금이라는 전통악기가 어떻게하면 편안하고 친근하게, 또는 신선하게 다가갈 수 있을까 고민을 하던 도중 한국전통음악과 재즈 장르가 동시에 가지고 있는 ”즉흥성“에 집중하게 되었습니다.
재즈와 한국 전통음악, 두 장르 모두 시대를 거치며 아주 많은 변화를 이루었고, 지금도 연주가와 창작가들을 통해 계속해서 새로운 길을 만들며 흘러가고 있습니다. 이러한 두 장르가 계속 흘러갈 수 있게 하는 힘이 무엇일까 고민해보았는데, ”즉흥성“으로인해 파생되는 변화무쌍함이 아닐까 싶었습니다.
예를 들어 한국전통음악 중 민속음악인 “산조“, ”시나위“ 는 장단 및 형식이 정해져있지만 매 공연마다 음악가의 즉흥성과 창작성을 통해 수많은 새로운 선율이 만들어집니다.
이는 재즈 음악가들이 정해진 형식의 코드진행에서 자신만의 선율을 즉흥적으로 만들어내어 전혀 새로운 곡으로 창작해 내는 것과도 일맥상통합니다.
이러한 두 장르의 공통점에 집중하여, 오랫동안 사랑받아온 재즈 스탠다드 명곡의 형식에 가야금의 즉흥 선율을 더하여 작업하게된 앨범이 바로 ”GAYAGEUM w/jazz” 입니다.
“Bluish” is one of ‘GAYAGEUM w/jazz’ album’s most trending hits. What challenges did you face in blending these traditional Korean music and jazz genres?
. ”GAYAGEUM w/jazz’ 앨범의 대표 히트곡 중 하나가 ‘블루시’입니다. 한국 전통음악과 재즈 장르를 융합하는 데 어떤 어려움을 겪으셨나요?
A: The greatest challenge was that the melodies were so well-known. They are familiar tunes that many people will be able to predict after the first bar or two. It was a challenge to create my own variations based on those beloved tunes.
It was also challenging to add the original sound of the Gayageum. It wasn’t easy to fuse the two genres in a way that was not too much and not too little, and just right. I tried many different things when preparing to record the album, studying jazz chords and applying theories. In the end, the melodies that came to me naturally while playing the Gayageum were chosen over deliberate ones.
– 제가 모티브로 삼은 음악들이 너무나도 유명한 테마 멜로디를 가진 곡들이라는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다. 오랫동안 사랑받아온 재즈스탠다드 곡은 인트로 첫 마디만 들어도 멜로디가 예상될 수 있을만큼 익숙한 곡들인데, 이것을 바탕으로 어떻게 나만의 선율을 창작해낼 수 있을까 하는 고민이 가장 컸습니다.
또한 여기에 ‘가야금‘의 고유한 음색을 가미하는 것도 큰 숙제였습니다. 너무 과하지도, 너무 부족하지도 않게, 말그대로 ”담백하게“ 두 장르를 융합한다는 것이 생각처럼 쉽지 않더군요. 앨범 작업을 준비하며 재즈 코드 공부도 많이 하고 이론적인 부분도 적용해보며 다양한 시도를 해보았는데, 결국은 인위적으로 만든 선율들이 아닌 연주하는 순간 저에게서 가장 자연스럽게 나왔던 선율들이 그대로 이 음악으로 만들어지게된 것 같습니다.
How do you perceive the role of traditional instruments like the gayageum in contemporary music scenes, both in Korea and globally?
현대 음악 씬에서 가야금과 같은 전통 악기의 역할을 한국과 전세계적으로 어떻게 인식하시나요?
A: Nowadays, the original sound and playing methods of traditional instruments are applied in various musical genres. Creators in contemporary scenes are able to make different musical attempts and expand the spectrum of music by crossing over genres.
– 요즘은 전통악기가 가진 고유의 소리와 주법이 다양한 음악장르에 사용되고 있습니다. 전통악기만의 고유하고 특별한 소리와 연주법들을 통해 현대 음악 씬의 창작가들이 다양한 음악적 시도를 할 수 있고 이를 통해 장르를 넘나드는 음악의 다양성을 확장할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
You’ve had several collaborations with artists from different musical backgrounds. How have these experiences influenced your artistry?
다양한 음악적 배경을 가진 아티스트들과 여러 차례 협업을 해왔습니다. 이러한 경험이 여러분의 예술성에 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?
A: Since I studied traditional music in school, I’ve always wanted to work with different genres. I became interested in the Hongdae(Hongik University) independent music scene, worked wit& different artists who were in that scene and became seriously invested in expanding the genre I represented.
It was so much fun to work together by understanding and recognizing music different to my own, and finding out ways to perform together. And this helped to mold myself into a musician who created music itself, not bound by traditional music or instrument.
When I could visualize just music, not limited to a certain genre, I went from HyeYoung Oh the Gayageum player to HyeYoung Oh the musician who utilizes the Gayageum, who works to provide joy (of varying definitions) for myself and the listener.
– 예술고등학교, 예술대학 국악과를 전공하고 쭉 전통음악만 공부해왔던 저는 항상 타 장르를 접하고싶은 마음이 있었습니다. 그러던 중 홍대 인디씬에 관심을 가지게 되고 또 그곳에서 활동하는 다양한 아티스트들과 교류하며 장르의 확장에 대해 진지하게 고민해보는 계기가 되었습니다.
서로 다른 음악을 이해하고 인정하며 그 속에서 같이 어울릴 수 있는 방법을 찾는 협업 과정이 너무 재미있었고, 결과적으로 나 자신이 ‘전통’음악, ’전통‘악기에 한정되지않고 틀에서 벗어나 ’음악’ 그 자체에 대해 고민하고 창작해나가는 음악가가 될 수 있었습니다.
어떤 장르의 특성을 가진 시각이 아닌 ’음악’이라는 존재 자체를 바라볼 수 있게 된 순간부터, 오랫동안 공부해왔던 ‘전통’의 틀에서 탈피하여 ‘가야금 연주가‘ 오혜영이 아닌 ‘음악가’ 오혜영으로써 가야금을 도구로 하여 나 자신과 내 음악을 듣는 사람에게 기쁨(다양한 의미로써의)을 줄 수 있는 작업들에 집중할 수 있게 된 것 같습니다.
What are some misconceptions people have about traditional Korean instruments?
사람들이 전통 한국 악기에 대해 가지고 있는 오해는 무엇인가요?
A: What surprised me the most in my busking days is how many people from Korea were so unfamiliar with the Gayageum, a Korean traditional instrument. Actually it shouldn’t have been a surprise because these instruments are rarely seen unless you go and see them in traditional music concert venues.
And most of these people expressed their surprise at how their expectations of the Gayageum always playing slow and boring music were not met.
Without experience, we wouldn’t know anything. So many people saw the Gayageum in a new light in a street performance they chanced to come across. I think people’s experiences like this lead to going to concerts and seeking out music, and wanted to make more chances for them to encounter the Gayageum, so that they would find its charm by escaping their stereotypical idea of the Gayageum associated with boring, slow and old music, and feeling it to be a familiar instrument.
Once they feel familiar with the instrument, the music people felt boring can become interesting too. This is a process of becoming connoisseurs.
– 제가 버스킹 공연을 활발하게 할 때 가장 놀랐던 점은 가야금이 한국 전통악기임에도 불과하고 가야금을 생소하게 느끼는 한국인들이 많았다는 것입니다. 전통음악을 주로 공연하는 공연장에 가지 않으면 악기를 보고들을 일이 거의 없었으니 당연한 일이었겠죠.
그리고 길거리에서 저의 연주를 통해 가야금이라는 악기를 처음 마주한 사람들의 대부분은 “가야금은 지루하고 느린 음악만 연주하는줄 알았다” 라는 반응이었습니다.
뭐든 경험해보지 않으면 모르는 일들이라고 생각합니다. 우연히 거리에서 마주친 가야금 연주에서 상상했던 것과 전혀 다른 새로움을 느낀 분들이 많았던 것 같습니다. 저는 사람들이 이러한 경험을 얻을 기회가 있어야 그것을 계기로 추후 스스로 공연을 찾아가거나, 음악을 찾아듣거나 하는 행동으로 연결된다고 생각하여 계속해서 많은 사람들이 가야금을 접하는 기회들을 만들어냈습니다. 이를 통해 사람들이 “지루하다, 느리다, 오래된 음악이다”라는 고정관념에서 벗어나 가야금의 매력을 발견하고, 더 나아가 사람들에게 친숙한 악기가 되게 하려고 노력했던것 같습니다.
그렇게 일단 친숙해지고나면 예전에 ”지루하다“고 생각했던 음악들이 재미있어지기도 하는것 같습니다. 애호가가 되는 과정인거죠.
Apart from playing the gayageum, what do you do to destress or gain inspiration?
가야금 연주 외에 스트레스를 풀거나 영감을 얻기 위해 무엇을하나요?
A: I lie down doing nothing, no chores at all, or I meditate while focusing on myself objectively. When I have the time I travel, to be surrounded by nature rather than to cities.
When I’m immersed in the great nature, all my worries disappear and I find myself at peace.
– 아무것도, 아무일도 하지않고 가만히 누워있거나 또는 명상을 하며 스스로를 객관적으로 바라보고 생각해보려고 합니다. 시간 여유가 있을 때는 여행을 가곤 하는데, 도심지 보다는 자연을 찾아가는 편입니다.
거대한 자연 속에 존재하고있으면 그 순간 모든 근심 걱정이 다 사라진 아주 평온한 상태가 되곤 합니다.
You’ve done several performances. What has been the most memorable performance of your career so far?
여러 공연을 하셨잖아요. 지금까지 활동하면서 가장 기억에 남는 공연은 무엇인가요?
A: Busked with my Gayageum in 2015, for a couple of months in Trafalgar Square in London.
I was curious at the time how the public would respond to this instrument and chose this place for my busking experience where an international audience can be found, one that I’d always wanted to visit if I were ever to go to Europe.
On my first day I dressed up in traditional costume, carried my big instrument and arrived at the square, but got so scared that I couldn’t start playing.
I remember it like yesterday, wandering in Trafalgar Square carrying my Gayageum. I decided I wasn’t going back without doing anything, and when I finally did start playing so many people listened, and loved it.
The first time is always the hardest, I guess. After overcoming my first day fears I enjoyed performing every single day.
I played every day except rainy and snowy days, and I could intuitively see the audience’s response, all the more clearly because it wasn’t a formal concert venue. I strongly felt, in the end, that the Gayageum and Korean traditional music were welcomed and loved by many people from around the world.
This experience, this memory is what made me love the Gayageum more, and even now provides me with the energy to perform and live on as a musician.
– 2015년 약 두달 간 런던의 트라팔가 광장에서 가야금 버스킹 공연을 했습니다.
그당시 문득 해외에서는 가야금이 대중에게 어떤 느낌으로 다가갈까 궁금하여 버스킹 여행을 떠났는데, 전부터 유럽에 간다면 꼭 가고싶었던 런던, 그 중 전세계 사람이 많이 몰리는 트라팔가 광장을 버스킹 장소로 정했습니다.
처음 버스킹에 나가던 날 한복을 차려입고, 큰 가야금을 들고 당당하게 광장에 도착했지만 막상 도착하니 너무 겁이나서 연주를 시작하지 못했습니다.
악기를 들고 트라팔가 광장을 한참 서성이던 그 때 그 마음이 지금도 생생히 기억납니다. 이대로 아무것도 하지않고 집에 돌아갈 수는 없다고 생각하여 용기를 내서 자리를 잡고 연주를 시작하니 정말 많은 사람들이 연주를 듣고 좋아해 주셨습니다.
역시 처음이 가장 힘든 것이겠죠. 첫날의 두려움과 떨림을 이겨내고나니 그 이후로는 너무 즐겁게 연주를 한 나날들이었습니다.
눈비가 내리는 날 말고는 꼭 트라팔가 광장에 나가 연주를 하였는데, 정식 공연장에서 형식을 갖춘 공연이 아니다보니 전세계 사람들이 어떻게 가야금을 받아들이고 느끼는지 직관적으로 명확하게 느낄 수 있었고, 결과적으로 가야금과 한국 전통음악이 많은 사람들에게 환영받고 사랑받는다는 느낌을 강하게 받았습니다.
이 경험과 기억이 제가 가야금을 더 사랑하게 만들고, 지금까지도 연주하며 음악가로 살아나갈 수 있는 원동력이 되었던 것 같습니다.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences, both in traditional Korean music and other genres?
한국 전통음악과 다른 장르에서 가장 큰 음악적 영향을 준 사람은 누구인가요?
A: The Gayageum maestro ByeongGi Hwang had the greatest influence on me. Every student of the instrument has grown up with his music, learned and played it. His work consists of all kinds of sounds from his infinite imaginative creativity. Though his music is decades old now, I always find something new, something to learn. His new attempts were pioneering, and so much variety was there that I could learn, and I also realized so much about the mindset of a creator who never stopped studying and pondering.
– 가야금 명인 황병기 선생님의 영향이 컸습니다. 가야금을 공부하는 학생이라면 누구나 그렇듯 어릴 때부터 황병기 선생님의 음악을 배우고 연주하였는데, 무궁무진한 상상력을 통해 가야금에서 다채로운 소리를 끌어낸 작품들이 너무나 멋집니다. 지금은 몇십년이 지난 음악들임에도 아직도 들을때마다 새롭고 배울 점들이 가득합니다. 그 시대 누구도 시도하지 않았던 참신한 시도들, 가야금으로 만들어 낼 수 있는 다양한 소리들을 황병기 선생님의 작품들을 통해 배울 수 있었고, 끊임없이 고민하고 연구하는 창작자의 마음가짐에 대해서도 많은 깨달음을 얻었습니다.
If you could introduce the gayageum to a global audience through a major festival or event, where would it be and why?
주요 축제나 행사를 통해 전 세계 관객에게 가야금을 소개할수 있다면, 그 장소는 어디이며 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
A: Even without an event, I’d like to play at Trafalgar Square of London again. It was where I introduced the Gayageum to so many people from around the world, on my busking tour. It was 10 years ago when I decided to go there armed only with a passion for introducing and playing the Gayageum. I want to do it again with my 10 years of music based on that very experience there, and introduce the Gayageum to a global audience again.
– 런던의 트라팔가 광장에 다시 가고싶습니다. 제가 해외 버스킹 여행을 하며 정말 다양한 사람들을 만나 가야금을 소개했던 곳이 트라팔가 광장이었습니다. 10년 전 가야금을 소개하고 음악을 연주하고싶은 열정만으로 찾았던 곳인데 10년이 지난 지금 그 경험을 바탕으로 성장한 지금의 저의 음악, 소리를 통해 전 세계 관객에게 가야금을 소개하고 싶네요.
What are your aspirations for the future, and how do you plan to continue evolving your music?
앞으로의 포부는 무엇이며, 어떻게 음악을 계속 발전시켜 나갈 계획인가요?
A: I think the most important thing when performing music is to make a good sound. I want to be a musician who puts her heart into every single sound that my fingertips create, though they may not be glamorous, to reach out and touch people deeply.
I’m also working on a compilation of musical scores for my album, “GAYAGEUM w/jazz”. That album is a result of cooperating with musicians of other genres and studying composition based on chord progressions and theories for the Gayageum. So I’d like to publish a compilation of my studies and processes that went into the album, to offer a good study material for students of the 25-string Gayageum, in Korea and abroad.
– 음악을 연주함에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 바로 ’좋은 소리를 내는 것’이라고 생각합니다. 화려하지 않아도 손끝에서 나오는 소리 하나하나에 마음을 담아 깊은 울림을 전달하는 음악가가 되고싶습니다.
더하여 “가야금으로 뜯는 재즈-GAYAGEUM w/jazz” 앨범의 악보집도 준비하고 있습니다.
그동안 타 장르 음악가들과 협업하며 가야금 악기 특성에 맞는 코드연주 및 이론을 바탕으로한 창작 공부를 하고싶었던 것이 이번 앨범 작업으로까지 이어진 것인데요, 제 공부 및 작업 과정이 녹아있는 악보집을 발간하여 국내외 25현 가야금을 공부하는 학생들에게 좋은 공부자료가 될 수 있었으면 좋겠다는 마음으로 준비하고 있습니다.
If you could give advice to your younger self when you were just starting out, what would it be?
이제 막 연주를 시작하려는 후배에게 조언을 해준다면 어떤것이 있을까요?
A: Be a performer unlimited by boundaries, and not afraid of experiencing and challenging.
Keep learning through those attempts and experiences, and applying what you’ve learned to keep creating your own sound, your own music.
And if you could go further and become content with your sound and music, you’ll feel the utmost happiness as a musician. What’s important is to go your own way and never giving up. Spend a lot of time focusing on yourself, and build up a strong, unswaying musical world of your own.
– 틀에 갇히지 않고, 뭐든 경험하고 도전하는 것을 두려워하지 않는 연주자가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
다양한 시도와 경험을 통해 계속 배워나가고 그 배움을 스스로의 음악세계에 적용해나가며 나만의 소리, 나만의 음악을 창작해 나갔으면 좋겠습니다. 여기서 더 나아가 내가 만들어낸 소리, 음악에 만족할 수 있다면 음악가로써 더할나위없는 기쁨을 느낄 수 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 중요한 것은 포기하지 않고 나의 길을 가는것입니다. 나에게 집중하는 시간을 많이 가지고, 흔들리지 않는 단단한 나만의 음악세계를 만들어가시길 바랍니다.

SKINZ is an upcoming virtual K-pop boy group under Bridge Entertainment agency comprised of digital avatar members. With fresh and vibrant energy, SKINZ is not just another virtual idol group. They represent a new wave of creativity in the K-pop industry as they prepare for their debut.

XY is a Japanese boy band formed in 2023 through the Yoshiki Superstar Project X, a talent competition produced by renowned musician Yoshiki. Combining rock band elements with a dance-vocal unit, XY captivated audiences with their energetic performances and diverse musical styles. However, after a strong debut, the group’s activities have slowed down, leaving fans wondering about their future.
Debut & Early Success
On November 5 before XY band’s debut, member Yoshi died in a traffic accident. With approval from Yoshi’s family, a new vocalist, Tegoshi Yuya, was chosen. As a tribute to Yoshi, XY band released the “XY feat. YOSHI” digital single using his pre-recorded voice. XY officially debuted in June 2023, with the single “Crazy Love”, which topped the iTunes Alternative Charts in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. You initially debuted under the stage name “Shine” and later adopted “Bada.” What inspired this change, and how does “Bada” reflect your artistic identity?

A: As the only member at my company with ample experience in an all-girls group, I made good use of that experience in N-DAY. I hope my experience of over 10 years may reflect some of my technical and artistic aspects as a singer and idol.

A: I’m not really suited to working in a team. I have met so many cool friends along the way, but nobody who was compatible as a colleague or a co-member. I was too young to realize this, however, and repeated the same mistake. If I had known this about myself earlier, I don’t think I would have started N-DAY. I now want to succeed as a solo singer.

Having been involved in solo and group activities, how do you balance these endeavors, and what distinguishes your solo work from your group performances?
솔로 활동과 그룹 활동을 병행하고 있는데, 이 두 가지 활동 균형을 어떻게 맞추고 있으며 솔로 작업과 그룹 공연의 차이점은 무엇인가요?
A: I instinctively feel very strong and secure when team members are together, and even happy when we’re all together, whether it be in front of the mirror when we’re practicing, or on stage. But I’m greedy, passionate and love being in control. I want to feel the same confidence for a solo performance.

Your latest “kiss me baby” digital single has fans hooked. What is your song creation process like?
최근 발표한 디지털 싱글 ‘Kiss Me Baby’가 팬들을 매료시켰습니다. 곡을 만드는 과정은 어떤가요?
A: It was a hard challenge for me, as the track demanded such a different singing technique from my previous songs. ‘Kiss Me Baby’ is a song that improves my vocal skills, but also a relaxing song to listen to while driving.

Your recent performances on SBS, MBC, and KBS have been well-received. How do you prepare for these appearances, and what do they mean to you?

A: I’m to my company what Boa means to SM. My company began through me and acting through me in everything. Artists to come after me won’t have it as hard as me, to pave through. I also am so grateful for the management at my company, and want to be a profitable artist for everyone. I wanna be the artist to ‘construct my company’s building’.

You have a rich background in dance. What first drew you to dance, and how has your journey evolved over the years?
무용에 대한 풍부한 배경 지식을 가지고 계십니다. 처음 무용을 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇이며, 그 여정은 어떻게 발전해 왔나요?
A: I think I began dancing in grade school, or maybe as a seven-year-old in my dad’s car. I danced for sports competitions, middle and high school talent shows, for dance teams, then for college…I really love dancing. I feel the most lonely and yet the happiest when I dance. I myself am Dance.

A: You really do know a lot about me, I’m so flattered. I learned that the real world is oblivious to my sweat and hard work put into dancing. What a Management or representing company can do is not easy. I learned that an artist like me can’t make it on their own. Life is a tough dealer, I found out the hard way.

A: I hope that through me, someone somewhere, maybe the other side of the globe, might come to have a dream. Just like I did watching Michael Jackson. You’ve got to work for it, go through all the pain and solitude. My competitiveness as Bada is myselt, and there is nothing I can do other than continue to improve myself. My company is discovering the necessary elements of Bada the character, from the talents that I have and making me into a diamond from the rough gemstone. I am very lucky to have met my management.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
5년 후 자신의 모습은 어떤 모습일까요?
A: I am living my dream life already, on the tour for my concerts. I have paid back my company for more than I have received in support, having built up the building for my management. I will carry on with my endless album recording, music show appearances, national and world tours.

This is WOLF HOWL HARMONY’s most difficult dance performance to date, creating incredible visual impact through its choreography and expressive power. The choreography was devised by LIFULL ALT-RHYTHM Director Naoya Nagai.
The video was directed by YERD, a Japanese creative who has become renowned as a filmmaker and music video director whose works boast stunning visual beauty and unique storytelling. The video for ‘BAKUON’ was filmed in a manmade yet familiar abandoned structure, in a remote location devoid of visitors. Based on the concept that cultural evolution and the emergence of new movements also begin in unknown places, the video was shot using a variety of angles, large-scale aerial photography using drones, distinctive setups within the space and dizzying editing techniques, with the aim of creating a video that would serve as a statement of WHH’s resolve to shape the times to come.

KCrush America Magazine sat down with GALCHANIE to discuss her evolving career, creative process, and what fans can expect next.
What inspired you to pursue a music career and how would you describe your evolution as an artist since your debut?
I’ve always loved music since I was a kid. I was fascinated by how songs can express emotions and connect people. When I started making music, I fell in love with the creative processes like writing, producing, and bringing ideas to life.
Since my debut, I’ve grown a lot, both in my sound and how I approach my work. But one thing that hasn’t changed is my passion for creating meaningful music that resonates with people. Now, I’m stepping forward more as an artist, which feels like a big and exciting step in my journey.
Tell us a little about yourself when you are not in artistic mode. What about your travels and/or do you consider yourself a homebody?
I’m definitely more of a homebody, but I’m always learning and exploring new things online. This year, I’m hoping to pick up some new hobbies and get out more to experience things in person, let’s see how that goes! Haha.
Your solo debut in August 2022 featured the singles “Hide” and “Yok Yai.” What is your songwriting process like? Do you start with a melody, lyrics, or a concept first?
My songwriting process isn’t always the same, it depends on the song. Sometimes I start with a concept or a feeling I want to capture, and other times, a melody or a lyric just comes to me, and I build around that. With Hide and Yok Yai, I wanted to create songs that felt raw and honest, so the lyrics and mood played a big role from the beginning. But no matter how a song starts, I always focus on making sure it tells a story and connects with people in a real way.
How did the special project group DREAMGALS come into existence and what has been the most rewarding aspect of collaborating with MILLI and Flower. far in DREAMGALS?
DREAMGALS started when MILLI saw a clip of me and Flower.far singing together. She had the idea that we should make a song as a trio, and everything just flowed from there.
The best part of working with them is how much we inspire and push each other. We all bring different strengths to the table, but somehow, it just works. It’s been so fun creating music together and seeing people enjoy what we’ve made.
In January 2025, you released “ก็พอ (Enough)” single whose MV was filmed in Japan. What was the inspiration behind this song and its visual setting?
This song was written during a time when I was heartbroken. I did a lot of self-reflection and realized that sometimes, just being here and seeing the people you love happy is enough even if you can’t have them for yourself. That’s how the song came about.
As for the music video, we had the chance to film it in Japan, at various tourist spots. The vibe of the song really matched the locations, and the Japanese crew was so kind and wonderful to work with!
Congratulations on the latest “Baby Tee” single. How would you describe this lyrical masterpiece in a few words?
Thank you! “Baby Tee” is a fun, playful love song with a touch of sexy energy. It’s all about confidence, independence, and embracing who you are, while keeping things cute and flirty. It’s got that mix of empowerment, style, and a little bit of attitude, all wrapped up in a sweet love vibe.
You’ve collaborated with several artists like Nulbarich on the “Floatin” track remix. How do such collaborations come by and how do they influence your musical growth?
It started when Nulbarich wanted to do a remix with a Thai artist. He had the chance to listen to my music and really liked it, so we ended up collaborating. It was such a great experience working with him!
Working with different artists helps me grow by exposing me to new ideas and sounds I might not have explored on my own. Every collaboration teaches me something new about music and about pushing my own boundaries, which keeps me evolving as an artist.
You’ve been part of both the T-pop and international music scenes. How do you see T-pop evolving globally?
I think T-Pop is growing and getting noticed globally right now. We have our own unique Thai style, whether it’s in the visuals or the music. I really hope the charm of T-Pop gets recognized worldwide soon!
You’ve collaborated with several brands. How do you balance maintaining your artistic integrity while partnering with commercial brands?
Balancing artistic integrity with brand partnerships is about staying true to myself. I work with brands that fit my style and values, so it feels natural. As long as it aligns with my vision, it’s all about keeping things authentic and genuine.
You’ve performed at events like the RIMPHA MUSIC FESTIVAL alongside other DREAMGALS members. How do you prepare for such large-scale performances? Are there any festivals or events on your bucket list where you’d love to perform?
Preparing for big performances like the RIMPHA MUSIC FESTIVAL means a lot of practice and coordination with the team. We focus on making everything perfect for the audience.
As for my bucket list, I’d love to perform at HITC one day! It would be such an amazing experience!
“From Now It’s My Turn” track has a powerful aura from the unapologetic lyrics. What was the inspiration behind this musical piece?
“From Now It’s My Turn” was inspired by my experience in a toxic relationship. It’s about breaking free, reclaiming my power, and moving forward without looking back. I wanted the song to feel bold and unapologetic, representing strength and self-worth.
For our readers and your fans, is there anything you would like them to know about you that they might not know already?
I just want to let everyone know that I’m actually a lot more soft and sweet than I might seem! Hahaha! I know my appearance can come off as bold and fierce, and sometimes I don’t smile much when I meet people, but honestly, I’m not mad or anything it’s just my natural face! LOL
What’s the biggest goal you have yet to achieve in your career?
One of my biggest goals is to be recognized as a top artist and to have my work acknowledged on a global scale. I want to be that little spark that helps girls feel confident and inspires every one through the work I do. Making people feel good about themselves and empowered that’s the dream! and hopefully be nominated for The Best Female Artist of the Year someday. There’s still so much I want to accomplish, and I’m excited for the journey ahead!
As an artist, where do you see yourself in the next five years?
In the next five years, I see myself continuing to make music that really connects with people. I want to grow my influence in the music world and maybe try out some other creative projects too. Most importantly, I want to keep inspiring others, especially young women, to chase their dreams and be true to themselves. It’s all about growth, exploring new things, and leaving a positive mark!
