HYBE entertainment agency has been going through a series of ordeal in the past few days.
In addition to the Newjeans and Min Hee Jin’s issue, the recent series of ordeals stem from HYBE’s controversial internal report that criticized idols. The report gained attention during the October 2024 National Assembly audit where its inhumane content started gaining trackion on the internet. The report included statements such as “members debuted when they were at their ugliest” and “no one has the features of an idol, and the plastic surgery is excessive”.
The report, titled “Weekly Music Industry Report”, was meant for key leaders of HYBE and its subsidiary labels. The content criticized idols to the extent of demeaning their appearances and skills. Amidst the rage which saw artists and producers also respond to the criticisms, HYBE dismissed the report creator, Chief Content Officer Kang, on October 29.
On October 29, HYBE’s CEO Lee Jae Sang also posted an apology on the agency’s official website. The CEO apologized to artists, fans, and industry colleagues for the demeaning report. Jae Sang highlighted that the report was for collecting opinions on industry trends and issues. However, he admitted that the company was at fault for using provocative language toward K-pop artists and allowing the author’s personal assessments and opinions to be included in the document.

Why is this so frustrating?!” is a question I ask myself every time I sit down to write a piece for publication. The angst of the creative process is exasperating, energy consuming and… well, fun. Once you’ve gotten into your groove anyway. In filmmaker Kenichi Ugana’s (Love Will Tear Us Apart, Extraneous Matter), chaotic and funny homage to the pain, and horror of the creative process and Japanese splatter films, The Gesuidouz ザ・ゲスイドウズ, the angst of creating is brilliantly tied to the fear of maturing while trying to figure out how to be a successful punk rocker for lead singer and writer Hanako (Natsuko) and her perfectly imperfect bandmates.
Named after song lyrics referencing the desire to want to live like a “gutter rat” and the Japanese word for sewage, but also the hope of something beautiful coming from something dirty, Hanako has one wish, for The Gesuidouz to have a major hit single and perform at the famous Glastonbury Festival in England before her untimely demise on her 27th birthday.
Convinced she’s destined to die like some of the greatest punk rockers who popularised the genre though she herself is neither as talented and famous as them, nor has any known life-threatening disease – Hanako’s obsession serves as her driving force to create. While her four best friends and bandmates played by, Leo Imamura, Yutaka Kayan, and Rocko Zevenbergen, believe in Hanako completely, their Manager (Yûya Endô) is as frustrated by their abysmal album sales, as she is her writer’s block. Desperate for them to create a hit, he sends them to a rural village in the countryside to take part in a ‘work for lodging’ program.
And wouldn’t you know it. It works. Hanako and the band find inspiration by going back to the origins of punk rockers rocking out in small garages, but this time in a barn surrounded by animals, vegetable fields, and an audience of elderly people who might not understand their lyrics but appreciate their sound.
While in Toronto for the world premiere of The Gesuidouz ザ・ゲスイドウズ at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Ugana sat with me to talk about his own creative process, using calligraphy as a visual metaphor for the blood and pain of creating, using an homage horror film and punk rock to highlight the dilemma of Japan’s aging population.
The Gesuidouz ザ・ゲスイドウズ premiered in the TIFF 2024 Midnight Madness program.
Interpretation for the interview was conducted by Aki Takabatake of MOMO Films.

SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan could no longer hold his peace and ended up speaking his heart out highlighting that “idols are not items to be used”.
On October 29, Seungkwan shared a heartwarming message on Instagram pleading for more humanity. This message comes amidst recently released reports of HYBE’s internal documents critiquing idols of other agencies.
In the post, Seungkwan admitted that he could no longer stand back as the situation was worsening. The artist highlighted that fans and other artists work so hard. He added that artists give all they have to share their positive energy with their fans. Seungkwan pointed out that being an idol isn’t something he as an artist should have to endure while it eats him away. The star emphasized that artists should not be underestimated nor are they items to be used however users deem profitable.
Seungkwan added that it takes a toll on idols as they strive every moment while on stage. The star concluded by expressing his hopes that the industry would be a little bit more considerate and kind. Seungkwan highlighted that his heart breaks watching others give in and give up. He requested that people should not cause pain if they cannot afford to be accountable. Seungkwan also shared a personal note from fellow idol Haewon, an NMIXX member, which also echoed a similar message. Seungkwan ended the note in gratitude wishing everyone happiness and good health.

The court rejected Min Hee Jin’s plea to be reinstated as the ADOR CEO.
On October 29, Seoul Central District Court denied Min Hee Jin the honor of being reinstated as the CEO of ADOR. This follows Min Hee Jin’s hearing on October 11 after Min Hee filed a reinstatement injunction on September 13. In the injunction, Min Hee was pursuing a court mandate that would culminate in ADOR’s board voting for her reinstatement.
The September 11 injunction came about after ADOR’s board voted out Min Hee and replaced her with HYBE’s human resource head, Kim Joo Young. Since Mi Hee claimed that HYBE violated their shareholder agreement by voting her out, the company responded by extending her term, but as a main producer. the extension is set to expire on November 1.

Japanese boyband THE RAMPAGE have provided the song ‘Endless Happy-Ending’ as the opening theme song for the anime series ‘FAIRY TAIL: 100 Years Quest’.
The music video for the song sees the members of THE RAMPAGE performing in heavy rain for the first time.
The song begins with lyrics about “beginning the greatest story without an end”. THE RAMPAGE recently held their second Tokyo Dome concert, and the video epically depicts the group members reaching a new awakening, enhanced by magical CG effects that connect with the anime series, inviting the group and their fans (known as RAVERS) to push forwards to an even brighter future.
The “world of despair and sadness” evoked by the lyrics is represented in the video by endless rain and monochrome imagery, while the group members’ strong desire to overcome that despair and face the future is expressed through their powerful performance and piercing gazes.
The video was choreographed by NOPPO from the dance troupe s**t kingz. Don’t miss the powerful, dynamic dance performance in a scene where all 16 members of THE RAMPAGE stand with unmistakeable pride in their hearts in front of a huge skyscraper with a light show in its windows, boldly overcoming the rain even as it pours on them.

Controversial streamer Johnny Somali received some beating for his provocative actions.
Johny kissing the Statute of Peace at Itaewon
Johnny Somali has been streaming a series of disrespectful and provocative streams that Koreans cannot stomach anymore. Some weeks ago, Johnny had live-streamed kissing and dancing inappropriately at the Statue of Peace, Itaewon.
Johnny escaping from confronters
On October 24, a Korean recognized Johnny during one of his live streams and asked him to apologize for his actions. This is because the said statute symbolized the resilience and suffering of women who experienced sexual slavery under the Japanese military during World War II. During the confrontation, things got physical to the point that Johnny’s friend appeared with a weapon. Nonetheless, he was overwhelmed forcing Johnny to back off.
Johny being escorted out of Seoul subway
On September 30, Johnny was escorted out of the Seoul subway after becoming a nuisance. In this incident, Johnny was live streaming on Ramble while playing inappropriate and loud noises. The streamer later started going through the train while shouting causing the police to intervene.
Johnny’s Korean friend arming himself with a weapon
Johnny Somali, a Somali-American controversial streamer, was arrested in Japan (September 2023) and permanently banned from entering Japan. With the circulating videos and the streamer’s disrespectful demeanor, many agree that the Korean government should also take stern action as a lesson to future potential offenders.
[UPDATE] As of November 2, 2024, The controversial vlogger, Johnny Somali, has been barred from leaving South Korea amidst a police investigation. Johnny, a Somali/US YouTuber, is undergoing a police investigation for his disrespectful series of actions over the last few days. Johnny is being investigated because of his actions at a convenience store in Mapo area, Seoul. During the incident, an employee stopped Johnny from drinking at the store but the vlogger ignored and went on to even pour instant noodles on the table. The vlogger went to the extent of using vulgar language after other people stepped in.

There are plenty of romantic reality shows out there. From Love is Blind to The Bachelor to Single’s Inferno–there’s a plethora to choose from. What makes these shows great? Unpredictability, romance, and drama. Get ready for a twist with Love Like a K-Drama. For fans of both reality tv and K-dramas, this is going to rock your world! Ever wonder if the chemistry between co-stars makes its way into their personal life? Love Like a K-Drama is here to put that to the test.
Concept: 9/10
The show starts by bringing together a group of four single Japanese actresses. They travel to Korea to pair up with four single Korean actors. Together, they’ll audition for and act in mini K-dramas each week. Will true love bloom as they film romantic scenes? The answer is yes! But perhaps not how you would expect. This show had me crying for one girl who developed genuine feelings for a cast mate and wasn’t matched with affection from him. She navigates how to get over him whilst still having to act together, and watch him act with other girls. People you expect to be paired up might not end up together. And that makes this show an easy binge!
Watching their on-screen chemistry translate to real life was definitely an interesting aspect, but so was simply watching them grow as actors! Not everyone finds love in the end, but this show provided them with the opportunity to hone their skills.
Cast: 8/10
I really loved the participants in this. There was a good variety of personality and style. Because they all stay in the same home during filming, it allows you to get a look at them both professionally and as laid-back friends. There are sweet moments, and tension too, that make the stars dynamic and easy to watch.
K-Drama Shorts: 5/10
The actual acting itself was definitely cringe at times! Part of this can be chalked up to the scripts themselves. Very dramatic, they incorporated all of the standard K-drama moments like subtle touches and kissing in the rain. Every episode involves some sort of kiss, whether it was passionate or quick varied. It was definitely intriguing watching actors who had mixed feelings for each other interact in this way. Imagine being paired up with someone you know has feelings for you, while you have a crush on someone else! This happened multiple times in the show, sometimes resulting in personal life leaking into the professional–with poor acting being the result.
Themes: 9/10
Many of the actors involved are extremely hardworking. Some burst into tears when rejected from auditions. It’s clear that their motive in coming is not just to find love, but to follow their dreams. The perseverance involved over the span of the show, with some actors never scoring roles, will tug on your heartstrings.
In Love Like a K-Drama, you also get a firsthand look at developing feelings. Individuals go out on dates, run lines together, and live together. It’s an environment where a crush is hard to keep hidden, especially when multiple people might be eying the same person! This creates a lot of tension (and drama) in the show. It can be difficult to watch when you see someone get turned down by their crush but also shows that there is some realism to this reality show. Despite some moments of heartbreak, there are happy times as well! Some of the couples that developed were genuinely so sweet and fun to watch!
Final: 7.5/10
Love Like a K-Drama is a great watch. It was a little slow for me at first, but then quickly became a binge. I was so sad when it ended, and hope they have another season! The actors were like friends at the end, with several legit couples formed, and I’d recommend any K-drama lover to watch!

Rapper Yoon Byung Ho, also known as Bully Da Ba$tard, has been given an additional jail term for using drugs while in detention.
Yoon Byung Ho has been in detention while awaiting a trial for drug use charges. The rapper was convicted in 2022 for methamphetamine and marijuana use at his home. The charges also included the purchase of fentanyl and an attempt to purchase methamphetamine. As a result, Byung Ho was given a 7-year imprisonment in December 2023.
While in detention before the conviction, Byung Ho was allegedly involved in another drug incident. In August 2022, the rapper was reported to have used psychoactive drugs including zolpidem, diazepam, and lorazepam while at Incheon Detention Center. Although Byung Ho tried defending himself terming the incident as a ‘spiking case’, the court brushed his defense citing the lack of a solid explanation for drug traces found during his urine test.
On October 25, the ‘High School Rapper 2′ and ‘Show Me the Money’ contestant was given an 8-month imprisonment and a 2-year parole. Suwon District Court also gave the rapper an additional 40 hours of drug prevention education. The judge highlighted that despite Byung Ho’s severe action of using drugs while in detention, the rapper had no prior convictions concerning similar crimes thus the fair sentencing.

Incheon Airport has pulled out of its earlier plans to create a separate entrance and exit gate for celebrities after criticism of preferential treatment.
On October 23rd, Incheon Airport announced that they would be creating a separate gate only for celebrities to avoid inconvenience and maintain the safety of other passengers, this decision was reached after a celebrity’s security had caused major inconveniences back in July after an overwhelmingly large crowd tried to get a glimpse of the celebrity. As a result, Incheon Airport proposed the ‘celebrity-only-gate’, which was to take effect as of October 28th.
However, the celebrity-only-gate was not well received as many individuals expressed that the move was more of a preferential treatment than a safety measure. With the weight of the matter and the overwhelming criticisms, Incheon Airport was forced to withdraw its plans.
On October 27th, Incheon International Airport Corporation made an official statement indicating that it would no longer be implementing the celebrity-only-gate plans. In the statement, the corporation highlighted that concerning the diverse opinions from the parliamentary audit amidst media coverage, they have decided to do away with special entry procedures for high-profile individuals who attract large crowds. The airport corporation also added that it would work on the crowding issue by reviewing overseas airports’ crowd-management methods.

On October 25, Newjeans group was awarded the ‘Frontier Prize’ for showcasing a pioneering spirit and endeavors of pushing the limits.

In a moment of confusion, Hyein went on to give the speech only to realize they had not yet done a group greeting. Amid the embarrassment, as other members and the crowd wallowed in laughter, Hyein guided the embers into offering an official group greeting.

Despite the raging emotions and some tearful breakdowns, Hyein managed to get through the acceptance speech, thanks to her fellow members.
