The Corner Club Returns 1 1024x1024

The not so cool kids in the corner Mike and Sav of the indie pop duo corner club, are back with a new EP. Some of you KCrush readers may remember listening to their interview on Candid Conversations back in August. Following up their 2021 freshman EP “little love lullabies” with “in the rearview mirror.” A beautiful rollercoaster of life’s ups and downs. Sav and Mike are no strangers to writing about experiences and man are they sharing some good ones. In the two years following their first release there has been a cross country move for both of them, losses and hurdles of love. Sav, the vocalist for corner club had this to say on the EP, “With a longer project like this one, we had the opportunity to experiment with new styles while hopefully keeping some of our usual atmosphericness and storytelling.”

The first release from “in the rearview mirror” was “dreaming.” It was inspired by a group chat where Sav’s aunt discussed a dream she had following the passing of her grandmother. It’s a very  heartfelt and gentle song with some beautiful acoustic guitar play. The next track up was  “wherever you’re ready.” I was instantly hooked after playing it. The first night I played it about five times back to back. It tells the story of the aftermath feelings following a break up. When most people part with a partner they sometimes wish their ex well, but not here. The song opens up with the lyrics “I hope you’re not ok. I hope you’re down in the dumps. I hope you think of me when you’re crying to sleep (boohoo).” Then later a really upbeat and powerful guitar riff is played. It’s a really fun song and I absolutely love the tongue-in-cheek attitude the lyrics bring. It was also released with a music video directed by Emily Lin. Mike, the guitarist and producer of corner club says, “The story of the video basically has Sav following around her ex, watching mischievously as he meets a new girl, only for things not to work out (with the help of a little sabotage from Sav). At the end, there’s a bit of a romcom trope, where the new girl meets the old girl and they commiserate over their shared experiences.”

The Corner Club Returns 2 1024x1024

Another standout on the EP is a song called “radiant.” It’s hard for me to pick a favorite track, but it’s certainly between “whenever you’re ready” or this. It opens with “I wish I were radiant. The kind of girl that everybody likes. I wish I were radiant. The kind of boy that everybody wants to be.” Everything about it is executed so perfectly. The lyrics are very poetic, Sav’s vocals are very sultry, Mike’s playing is very soulful and smooth.

The seven track EP comes to a close with “when i die.” A song that was inspired by Sav’s mom who said, “I don’t care if you bury me when I die…cremate me and scatter my ashes so I can travel the world forever. Just don’t throw me in the ocean because I can’t swim very well.” I found it to be a very peaceful track that brings comfort to the thought of our impending deaths. It’s another intimate song with acoustic guitar, but also with cello played by Spencer Shen and flute by Michelle Zarco. I think it was a fitting end to a very beautiful piece of music.

James Lee Announces Engagement 1

On October 30, 2023, former Royal Pirates bassist James Lee announced his upcoming marriage on Instagram.

Lee wrote, ” I have some great news [I] am excited to share with you. I’m getting married!”

A post shared by james lee (@jamesjhl)

In the post, Lee introduced his fiancé, Fafa, but did not provide details about who she is since Lee tries “to keep parts of my life private to remind myself to appreciate the experiences and moments we have [face-to-face,” but he added, “Fafa is a beautiful person inside and out with an incredible sense of responsibility, passion, integrity and loves with her entire being. She is kind-hearted and unafraid to fight and sacrifice for the people she loves. She reminds me that even though there are challenges every single day, it’s worth it to persevere, to get up and fight and be a better person.”

Lee, who is also the dog dad to Jerry the Woolf, was Royal Pirates’ bassist from 2009-2017. In 2015, Lee sustained severe injuries to his left wrist and shoulder when a restaurant’s steel door frame and glass fell on him. The accident nearly left Lee without his hand, but it was reattached during a lengthy surgery. The injury forced Lee to give up bass, and he switched to keyboard during Royal Pirates’ November 2015 “Run Away” comeback.

Lee departed Royal Pirates in 2017 due to the injury. He has been active on social media and in music since.

Lee’s marriage news is joyful news he deserves! Congratulations to Lee and his fiancé!

Mari_Kim_ 12 1024x704

Mari Kim, is a contemporary Korean artist, renowned as a digital fashion designer, music video director and pioneer of the “Eyedoll” style of art. She currently serves as the CEO of Japanese immersive entertainment studio Cocone N.Y, where she is the key visionary of their innovative digital fashion offerings. At Cocone N.Y. Mari leads a team at the forefront of digital fashion and social networking with over 15 years of avatar styling experience and over 16 billion digital items sold.

Prior to her role as CEO at Cocone N.Y. Mari directed the critically acclaimed music video ‘Hate You’ for Kpop group 2NE1 utilizing her famous ‘doll eye’ style of animation, and has served as the CEO of her own popular fashion and beauty brand MARI MARI since 2018. Mari also boasts a robust background in both traditional and digital art: Her animated piece Missing and Found became one of Korea’s first art-based NFTs to sell at auction, fetching a price of 288 ETH in 2021 ($450k). Her pop art murals are prominently displayed in entrepreneur David Grutman’s premiere Komodo nightclubs in Miami and Dallas and the soon-to-be Komodo Las Vegas. Mari has had solo art exhibitions all over the world including Los Angeles, Miami, Berlin and London.

1. First, when we think of Mari Kim, we immediately think of 2NE1’s “I Hate You,” where your “Eyedoll” character takes the lead. We are really curious about the process of collaborating on the music video as a character artist. Could you share the behind-the-scenes story of how you got this opportunity?

Back when I was still a relatively new artist, I held many exhibitions in various small galleries. During that time, Yang Hyun Suk, who was the CEO of YG Entertainment and heavily involved in its operations, happened to purchase one ofmy paintings displayed in a furniture gallery. This led to him getting in touch with me. From the very first meeting, we had great communication, and he inquired about creating the cover art for 2NE1’s mini-album. Subsequently, I was also commissioned to produce the music video for one of the album’s tracks, “HATE YOU.”

The concept for the music video was brainstormed together with the CEO, and it was an incredibly enjoyable process. In this music video, the members of 2NE1 transformed into bounty hunters in the style of my artwork’s characters, EYEDOLL. They appeared in an animated format, and since then, countless people have watched this music video, which is still recognized as one of the best music videos to date.

2. I heard that you recently entered the gaming industry and assumed the role of CEO at CocoNe’s New York branch, a renowned Japanese gaming company. Were you scouted for the position? It appears to be a rapid transformation from being an artist to becoming the CEO of a Japanese gaming company in New York. We’re also intrigued by the story behind this journey.

A few years ago, I had a successful collaboration with Cocone on their existing service called POKE KOLO. Following that, I had several meetings with Cocone to discuss potential projects we could work on together. Around that time, I achieved significant success in the NFT art auction space, and this experience piqued my interest in the metaverse and sparked many ideas. During one of the meetings with Cocone, I submitted a proposal called “Centennial.” Cocone was highly impressed with the concept and promptly signed a contract.

As the development of the Centennial game progressed, I was actively involved in marketing and PR activities to ensure a successful launch. It was during this time that I was offered the position of CEO for the New York office, as Cocone recognized my ability to handle such tasks effectively. Given that my previous work on Centennial’s success could be applied to launching global games for Cocone, I didn’t find the transition too challenging. Furthermore, I saw this as a significant achievement in my journey as an artist, and the decision to take on this new role felt natural and not difficult at all.

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 2 735x1024

3. As an artist turned entrepreneur, we’re curious about your role at the New York office and your daily life with the team there.

In New York, my mission revolves around successfully launching Cocone’s global services through effective marketing and PR efforts. I engage in collaborations with external companies to ensure efficient work processes, and within the company, I oversee the social media team, operations team, and CX team. As a result, I find myself closely involved in various activities related to Cocone’s current users.

Understanding the preferences and behavior patterns of global users and devising marketing activities that resonate with them is indeed a fascinating aspect of my work.

4. Do you spend most of your time in the U.S. or do you travel between Japan, Korea and the U.S.? What do you find most interesting or enjoyable in each one?

I am primarily based in New York for my work, and it’s my favorite city in the world. I believe it’s an ideal place for getting things done quickly and efficiently, as it’s a hub for global trends and the gathering of numerous professionals. I’m particularly drawn to the diverse personalities coexisting in this city, which adds to its unique charm.

In Korea, I have my art studio, and I’ve built an efficient system to work on art projects, thanks to my long-standing team of studio employees. It’s very convenient for me in that regard. Additionally, Cocone has its subsidiary in Korea, and I often visit to exchange ideas and collaborate.

Japan also holds a special place in my heart as it’s a country rich in tradition, and I often find artistic inspiration there. Cocone’s headquarters is in Japan, and many employees work there, making it another important location for sharing ideas and collaboration.

Overall, I’m quite fond of these countries and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work in such diverse and inspiring environments.

5. Many emerging artists struggle to promote themselves, especially in this era of active social media. It can be even more challenging to gain recognition in such a competitive environment. Can you please provide some advice that could be really helpful for these up-and-coming artists? How did you navigate this process yourself when you had no connections or name recognition?

I could be considered an artist who has grown alongside the growth of social media. At the time, I was one of the early adopters of sharing my artwork on social media, even though I didn’t have a background in traditional art. I didn’t know any better, so I decided to showcase my work on social media, and it turned out to be an excellent marketing tool and a turning point in gaining recognition.

Today, with the abundance of content being uploaded to social media by everyone, the impact may be somewhat diminished. However, what I believe is most important is consistency. When I first started posting my work on platforms like blogs and Instagram, the user base wasn’t as extensive as it is today, and the quantity of content was relatively low. Nevertheless, I persevered and published 700 posts and artworks over two years. Without such consistent effort, I don’t think I would have achieved the same level of success, even during the booming era of social media.

Consistency over the long term is the most effective approach, and I believe this principle applies to all aspects of life.

6. I also saw an interview where your NFT artwork sold for a high price recently. Many people may be curious about what factors determine the price of such artwork. Could you explain what factors come into play when setting the price?

I often find value in artworks not just because they are visually pleasing and beautiful, but more often than not, they carry significant symbolic meaning. It’s important to consider the significance of a piece in terms of representing a trend or a first in a particular era. Additionally, understanding how a work symbolizes a particular period and movement is crucial. For example, the NFT piece I sold had strong symbolic significance as it was the first NFT piece planned by a Korean artist in Korea, representing a milestone in the world of NFT art.

7. Many artists want to create and promote their own NFT artworks, but the NFT market is still unfamiliar to many. How do you go about creating artwork as an NFT, and how does it differ from creating non-NFT art? Additionally, once you’ve created an NFT artwork, could you provide some advice on how to market it in the NFT space?

There are countless tools available for creating NFTs, which involve applying unique identification marks to digital images or videos using blockchain technology. Once these NFTs are created, there are numerous platforms where you can sell them. Platforms like OpenSea, among many others, showcase and facilitate the sale of various forms of NFT art. These platforms are creating markets independent of the traditional art world and are offering artists endless opportunities.

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 3 1024x683

8. At the Komodo Lounge located in Miami, USA, your artwork can also be seen. Were you scouted for the Komodo restaurant’s artwork?

Famous Miami entrepreneur David Grutman reached out to me after receiving my artwork as a wedding gift from a friend. Initially, we collaborated to create a digital wall for KOMODO Lounge in Miami, and it turned out to be a fantastic addition to the lounge. This year, we launched another KOMODO Lounge in Dallas, Texas, and it, too, has been beautifully brought to life.

9. We would love to hear from someone who has successfully built their own brand like you have. What do you consider the most important aspects of building oneself as a brand, and what aspects should one be mindful of?

Anyone with talent has the potential to create their own brand. It’s not about just doing what everyone else does; it’s about finding your unique style and personality. Even if it’s the same thing, you need to do it differently and discover your own distinctiveness.

As mentioned earlier, I believe that consistency is the foundation of success in everything. Nowadays, with numerous platforms available to showcase oneself, it’s crucial to consistently promote and market yourself. Through this ongoing process of promotion, your content will accumulate, expand, and eventually reach a wide audience.

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 5 744x1024

10. While growing up, did you already know what you wanted to do as a career? 양식의 맨 아래

I didn’t have a clear dream when I was young, other than the one my parents had set for me, which was to become a doctor. In many households, children’s future aspirations are often determined by their parents’ opinions. However, I had a strong passion for reading comic books, watching animations, and indulging in rebellious novels. Although I enjoyed these activities, I had no idea that I would end up living the life of an artist as I do now. Nevertheless, I believe that my interests and inclinations during my early years had a significant influence on my path to becoming an artist.

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 6 683x1024

11. There is still a prevalent bias in the cultural and arts sector that it is difficult to establish oneself without the financial support or background. For younger artists who may perceive high entry barriers, we would like to hear your thoughts on this. Especially, if you could offer advice on how to sustain oneself financially in the early stages? 양식의 맨 아래

The arts market can be considered relatively small, and success within it may indeed be challenging. However, nowadays, there are numerous tools for self-promotion and various platforms for exhibitions, which have significantly lowered the entry barriers. While it can still be tough to achieve success, I believe the opportunities for artists have become more accessible.

Many artists often pursue other jobs, especially in the early stages of their careers, to make a living. I, too, taught university classes for about ten years to support myself. However, it’s common to see artists eventually give up their artistic dreams to focus on their day jobs. The key to success lies in not losing sight of your own dreams and goals, and continually moving in the right direction. Balancing another job in the early stages is often necessary, in my opinion.

12. If you have any secrets or tips on how you’ve been able to expand your network so successfully, we’d love to hear them.

I consider myself fortunate to have started my art career during the emergence of social media, which provided me with numerous ways to promote myself. I didn’t have a formal art education, and when I began my journey as an artist in Seoul, I didn’t know anyone in the field. I didn’t have an existing network, but by consistently engaging in social media activities during the era of its growth, I naturally started building my network. This online network has also translated into real-world connections.

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 7 739x1024

13. You’ve always been ahead of trends. If you were to predict the next big trend we should be paying attention to, what would it be? What preparations would you recommend for those who want to lead the way in the next trend?

The current Alpha generation was born into an era where iPhones and digital technology have always existed. For them, the line between the physical and digital worlds may not be as distinct as it is for adults who grew up in a different era.

As the digitally savvy younger generations continue to grow, the digital item market is likely to see significant expansion. In this context, I believe that Cocone’s metaverse and avatar games hold great significance and will contribute to the further expansion of Cocone’s domain. We all need to prepare for this digital world.

14. Could you make some predictions about the cultural and artistic keywords for 2024?

Centennial, digital world, digital items.

15. Do you play video games? If so, what is your favorite video gameto play personally? Also, what sports you enjoy doing?

I’m also a gaming enthusiast, particularly fond of horror games. I used to really enjoy the game “Silent Hill” from Konami back in the day. Recently, I had a great time playing a game called “Dave the Dive.”

While I’m not particularly skilled in sports, I don’t engage in traditional sports activities. However, I love spending time in the ocean, and I occasionally go snorkeling and scuba diving.

16. Can you share “what I love” with our readers? Please pick your top 2 favorites for each category: 1) 2 YouTube channels you’re currently subscribed to, 2) 2 songs from your music playlist, and 3) 2 favorite Korean dramas or variety shows.

Youtube: Ralral, The pet collective

Music Play list: Peggy Gou, La Havane (Sofiane Pamart)

Korean show: Doona!, The Devil’s Plan

KCrush Interview With Mari Kim 8 769x1024

17. If you ever have time for rest and relaxation? If so, when do you take rests and what is your favorite thing to do during the down time?

I watch a lot of tv series and movies, often continuously and without breaks. It’s a way for me to keep my mind occupied with different content and prevent work-related thoughts from entering my mind.

18. What kind of fashion style do you enjoy wearing? Could you briefly describe the clothing items you’re wearing now?

I mainly prefer wearing clothes with subtle patterns. I enjoy adding variety through textures or different shapes in my clothing choices. I gravitate towards chicyet simultaneously sexy styles.

For more glamorous occasions, I tend to express myself through brands like Alexander McQueen or Balmain. On regular days, I opt for casual attire like Alexander Wang or Y3. Additionally, I have a fondness for Levi’s jeans.

19. Do you have anything to add that you might want to share with
our readers?

Cocone’s global project, Centennial, is an exciting challenge for both Cocone and me. I believe it’s a fantastic game that offers a diverse range of experiences, appealing to everyone from the Alpha generation to Gen Z. In Centennial, you can explore my art style, K-pop style, various music, engage in various social activities, and make numerous friends in this new digital world. Your interest and support are greatly appreciated.

In this interview, Carolyn speaks with Park Sun Young, Programmer of Asian Cinema at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), about the importance of promoting Asian cinema at international festivals for local and visiting international guests and industry insiders.

As a programmer Park and her team have a very difficult job of sifting through hundreds of submissions each year to decide on their final selections for platforms such as the A Window on Asian Cinema platform, the New Currents platform which highlights first and second films of up-and-coming filmmakers like Pawo Choyning Dorji (The Monk and the Gun), and Yeon Je-gwang whose film The Guest premiered at the festival.

One other category Park references was the Jiseok platform, a competition program which was created in honor of the late Kim Ji-seok. Kim, who passed away in 2017, was the Deputy Director, an executive programmer and one of the founders of BIFF.

Park also spoke about how the similarities in the history of all Asian countries contributes to the universality and relatability of the stories presented, making them compelling for not only audiences, but also programmers like herself.

Despite her academic background focused on the comedic film history of Korean cinema, Park is especially drawn to films with more dramatic themes as a festival programmer which makes for an interesting perspective, and a great example of how film is a medium of storytelling brings out new sides to those involved in all aspects of the film industry, including festivals.

Set in 2006, a pivotal time of change for the people of Bhutan as they prepare for the dawn of democracy, The Monk and the Gun director Pawo Choyning Dorji’s second feature film is a whip smart comedic drama about the ways westernization and modernization can both negatively and positively impact indigenous communities.

There’s a fine line between satire and pure comedy in film. Satire is used to poke fun at the expense of the subject to reveal the absurdity of their behaviors and even philosophy, whereas pure comedy is about showing the natural humor that arises through the everyday interactions of the characters.

In his second feature film Choyning Dorji (Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, 2019), very carefully ensures that his characterisations of the people of Ura, a small village in the picturesque mountains of Bhutan, are genuinely funny, rather than satirical.

This distinction is important to make as the premise of The Monk and the Gun relies on the most seemingly absurd situation, a young naive monk (Tandin Wangchuck) going on a mission to find two guns at the behest of the Lama, Benji (Tandin Sonam) a tour guide in dire financial straits taking an white American male tourist to find a collectible Civil War era rifle, and Tshomo (Decki Lahmo) a mother who sees the world around her changing, and possibly not for the best.

In our interview during the 2023 Busan International Film Festival, I spoke with Choyning Dorji, Lahmo and Sonam about the ways the film cleverly subverts the expectations audiences would have of the characters, the story, and the country of Bhutan itself. And James Bond. Trust me, the way Choyning Dorji inserts the mythos of this legendary screen character is probably my favorite meta reference to 007 ever.

New Jeans is the newest K-pop act in town that has everyone talking. Barely two years after their debut, the quintet girl band dethroned BTS of a Guinness World Record with their mesmerizing singles. What’s more, New Jeans members are among the youngest in the K-pop entertainment industry which further accentuates their trendy fresh vibe fused in a 1990s girl next door aura. Some of New Jeans’ most popular songs include “Ditto” (over 400 million Spotify views), “OMG” (over 500 million Spotify views), and “Hype Boy” (over 400 million Spotify views).

Screenshot_8

New Jeans debuted in July 22, 2022 under ADOR record label; an independent label under HYBE Entertainment. New Jeans is composed of Minji (19 years), Hanni (18 years old Vietnamese-Australian), Danielle (18 years old Korean-Australian), Haerin (17 years), and Hyein (15 years). New Jeans’ gruesome journey started back in 2019 as all members competed in the 2019 Plus Global Audition before becoming official New Jeans idol trainees.

Screenshot_10

A few months into their debut, New Jeans became a hot global topic for dethroning it’s sunbaes (seniors) BTS; also managed by HYBE label, as their tunes flooded TikTok and other social media platforms. Compared to their seniors BTS who broke the Guinness World Record in 409 days with Jungkook’s song, New Jeans became the fastest K-pop act to reach 1 billion Spotify streams in 219 days. On TikTok alone, #NewJeans has over 14 billion views and counting.

With going viral, came along goodies as the group secured deals with notable luxury brands. Minji secured a brand ambassadorship with Chanel, Hanni with Armani Beauty and Gucci, Haerin with Dior, Danielle with YSL Beauty and Burberry, and Hyein with Louis Vuitton. New Jeans has bagged notable awards including several instances for the Rookie of the Year and New Artist of the Year awards. New Jeans has also been featured in notable listicles including Forbes’s Korea Power Celebrity 40 and Time’s Next Generation Leaders. The “Hype Boy” and “Cookie” hit maker has also partnered with several notable brands, including Levi’s, Coca-Cola, and Apple Inc., on various philanthropical projects.

New Jeans is the newest K-pop act to beat in the entertainment industry. Given that most of the members are still in their teens, expectations are high for the “Ditto” single hit maker whose youth phase has only began. Early this month, Minji and Hanni scooped second and third place respectively in October’s Girl Group Member Brand Reputation Rankings. New Jeans also rocked the world of e-sports after the group collaborated with GODS to release the official anthem for 2023’s League of Legends World Championship. This is just but a beginning for this promising girl band.

Dynamic Duo 1 1024x427

Dynamic Duo is a seasoned Korean hip-hop group. Choiza and Gaeko debuted in 2004 with their album, Taxi Driver. This record became one of the best-selling Korean hip-hop albums of all time. They’ve done many collaborations in their years of music, from IU to Epik High. Their popularity and longevity in the music world is impressive. They recently dropped a mini album, and their song, “Smoke” has become a trending tune. Let’s explore both of these offerings from Dynamic Duo.

“HUNT” (feat. PSICK UNIV): 8/10

For those unfamiliar with Dynamic Duo, some of the rap style in this track is similiar to that of RM from BTS. It has that old-school flavor that is so great to listen to. “HUNT” has a chill beat and smooth groove, with great guitar riffs and occasional singing. The lyrics reflect on the duo’s earlier days as they were getting used to fame. The overall vibe is relaxing and reflective. Some of my favorite elements in this song are the driving bass line and syncopated drums. Gaeko and Choiza’s raps are excellent. You can sense how skilled they are as veteran artists. The hook is catchy, and the variety in instrumentation (chimes, piano, bass–to name a few) makes this a dynamic song.

“Tear drops”: 6/10

The rhythm of the rap on this track is upbeat and energetic. It’s an interesting contrast considering the song is called, “Tear drops.” However, once you know what the song is about, the melody completely makes sense. This is a story of someone treating romantic relationships lightly, being carefree while their partner is left in the aftermath of this nonchalant attitude. Here’s a peek at some of the lyrics: “I wanted something else, I just never said it / Someone younger, prettier, different than you…/ I’ll be okay if you break up with me”. The upbeat tune matches the attitude of the main character. It wasn’t completely my vibe, but I do think it displays great artistry.

“Smoke” (feat. Lee Youngji): 9/10

“Smoke” has been blowing up on the web. With so many dance covers, both formally on Korean tv and via Instagram/TikTok users, Dynamic Duo is reaching a wide audience. And for good reason, “Smoke” is an absolute hype song. It’s the perfect song to be featured on Street Woman Fighter 2. “Smoke” is all about self-confidence, resilience, and empowerment. The #smokechallenge has been circulating since September and has featured Kpop artists such as V, Jungkook, and Jay Park participating. The choreography by BEBE’s Bada Lee, paired with the sheer power of this track, made this the latest craze.

Dynamic Duo 2 1024x650

Final: 7.5/10

Dynamic Duo truly live up to their name. It’s not every day that you see this kind of longevity in artists. The fact that “Smoke” is absolutely blowing up and that they’re ten albums in is incredible. Just because they’ve been in the game a long time, doesn’t mean they still can’t keep up!

Big Fish 1 1024x1024

Celebrate HarryBigButtons’ 12th Anniversary with us!  Tell everyone you know!!

Korean Rock band HarryBigButton celebrates their 12th anniversary with the highly anticipated release of their third full-length album, “Big Fish.” This album, like a collection of ten vibrant movies, draws inspiration from a diverse range of cinematic worlds, infusing each track with distinctive styles and a myriad of emotions.

Despite the challenging backdrop of the pandemic, HarryBigButton overcame the obstacles to deliver a remarkable musical offering. The album’s final track and title song, “Big Fish,” stands as a heartfelt tribute to those who have experienced the pain of bidding farewell to a cherished loved one. It is a poignant dedication to all those who have faced similar struggles and an homage to the Sungsoo’s father, who played a profound role in shaping his identity.

Track 8 “Titane” captures the essence of what it means to be a family, exploring the complex dynamics of blood ties without genuine affection and the transformative power of love within unexpected connections.

V Layover Album Review 1

With BTS members releasing solo projects and singles, I was excited to hear what V had cooking. I personally wasn’t thrilled with some of the past solo releases from other members. Would Kim Taehyung provide a breath of fresh air, or would his EP be in line with the previous themes and style? I sighed with relief that Layover met my hopes. It’s very “V” and c’mon, the album cover with Yeontan?! This is one I enjoyed for sure. Here’s my reaction to each of the tracks.

Rainy Days: 7/10

Such a mellow intro, with lo-fi vibes, ambient sounds, and classy jazz piano. Then the song explodes with V’s deep and smooth vocals. The lyrics of “Rainy Days” focus on heartache and loss. Take a look at the main lyric:

Rainy days

I’m thinkin’ ’bout you, what to say

Wish I knew how to find the way

Right back to you, on rainy days like

“Rainy Days” is a great opener to set the tone for Layover.

Blue: 6/10

“Blue” is another chill track. I can imagine listening to this in a cafe as I type away at my laptop. There’s something about it that will allow it to function as background music as well as being enjoyed via intentional listening. Unfortunately, that means this track isn’t very standout on the album for me, but it is pleasant to listen to! I liked the female backing vocals; they paired well with V’s voice. The moody lyrics continue as he sings: The stars tonight I borrowed from the moon all shine on you/ But baby you’re still blue.

Love Me Again: 7/10

I love how smooth the transition between “Blue” and “Love Me Again” is. The moody vibes are still present with this track as V sings, “I wish you could love me again, no I don’t want nobody else, I wish you could love me again.”

What struck me once I was this deep in the album is how great this music feels in terms of the instrumentals. They’re well-crafted, and glide along from track to track. It makes for an experience, rather than just listening to a group of songs with different vibes. This is what I consider Layover’s strength to be. The overall cohesiveness of the album is great.

Slow Dancing: 8/10

“Slow Dancing” is a more upbeat track in comparison to the others. It’s also optimistic, making the sound bright and cheery. V isn’t singing about heartbreak but the possibility of love! The flute solo in this is a great moment, and makes this track come to center stage as one of the most memorable songs from Layover.

V Layover Album Review 2 1024x689

For Us: 9/10

This opening of “For Us” breaks up the continuous thread of the album and makes listeners pay attention. I honestly loved it. It leads into a great lo-fi feeling instrumental–filled with intrigue after the high-pitched vocals. V’s vocals on this are smooth like butter and addictive to listen to. The key change mid-song was a pleasant surprise, as well as adding in an upbeat percussion. This is definitely the most diverse track on the album and is a great way to close off Layover, as far as already introduced tracks.

Slow Dancing (Piano Ver.): 7/10

Both this version and the original are great in their own ways. The jazz piano is lovely, though I still prefer the flute solo. Either way, I wouldn’t skip this track in a playlist!

Final: 7/10

No track on this album feels like fluff. In fact, I would say they all depend on each other in some ways, making Layover an EP you want to listen to from start to finish. Some might complain that it’s a little sparse, with too many patches of instrumentals. However, for others, that is the greatest appeal of Layover. I fall into this category. V brought us an album that is easy to listen to, tells a story, and has a unique sound. V truly stands out as a solo artist and I’m so proud of this album!

Why True Beauty Is My 1 Favorite K Drama 1

True Beauty has everything I’d ever want in a drama. It’s filled with romance, comedy, suspense, family interactions, amazing character arcs, and an extremely satisfying ending. All of the characters added to the plot and each episode was an absolute joy. Did I watch the entire season twice in two weeks? Yes, I did, because this show is a feel-good, warm hug. It is my go-to drama and here’s why! (Spoilers ahead).

Plot: 10/10

True Beauty centers around a high school girl named Ju-Kyung. She’s a fun character–down to earth, loves comic books, and blasts rock n roll. However, she has one thing in her way–her looks. Ju-Kyung is bullied at school and is at the end of her rope. She ends up learning makeup to create a new identity for herself as she transfers schools. This drama’s plot shows viewers that true beauty isn’t what’s on the outside, but the inside. And I love the ride viewers go on to get to that point! The plot was amazing, with perfect pacing and an easy-to-follow storyline. There are also a few subplots within this drama, and it makes every scene interesting and worthwhile. No filler episodes here!

Setting: 10/10

This show has some memorable spots. The comic book shop, Ju-Kyung’s home, Su-o’s apartment, the tteokbokki shop–I would sightsee all of them if I was ever in Korea! These common areas reflected the characters so well. The combic book shop was a safe haven for Su-ho and Ju-Kyung. Ju-Kyung’s home was chaotic but still had some warmth to it. Su-ho’s apartment was almost sterile, like a hospital. They used cool tones and dark colors to reflect his mood and all the heartache he has kept under the surface. And of course, the tteokbokki shop where Ju-Kyung and Seo-jun had dinner together, where you can feel some of the tension between them. All of the settings were so well-crafted to increase the level of storytelling.

Characters: 10/10

Ju-Kyung’s character is so well-portrayed that I tear up every time she cries, even on my 5th watch of this drama! She is loveable, silly, and sincere. You root for her so easily in this show. I loved every moment.

Su-ho is a great contrast to Ju-Kyung. He’s mellow, moody, and rich–the opposite of Ju-Kyung! And yet they make such a great pair together. It’s incredible to watch him soften as he accepts and embraces his affection for her.

And this love triangle, are you kidding me!? I adored Seo-jun. His character’s arc was so impactful. Choosing to let go of Ju-Kyung so she could be with her true love (and the only one she was actually interested in), was such a bittersweet moment.

The side characters were hilarious and meaningful. Every element of this show comes together beautifully to tell this story.

Theme: 10/10

I love the heartfelt message of this drama. Su-ho has a past he can’t seem to get over, but when he lets Ju-Kyung into that heartache he begins to heal. Likewise, Ju-Kyung, as she shows Su-ho her true face, begins to realize that she can be authentic and loved for who she is. There are other character arcs as well, but the two lead’s progress really sticks with you the most! The themes of forgiveness, moving on, growth, and resilience make this drama an encouraging watch again and again.

OST: 10/10

“Call Me Maybe” and “Love So Fine” would always stick in my head! I love the OST to this drama so much. There’s such a span of moods when it comes to the soundtrack for True Beauty. There are the pop hits and then the heartfelt strings and sad ballets. Can any of us forget the feature of “Okie Dokie”?! The music is used so well in True Beauty.

Why True Beauty Is My 1 Favorite K Drama 2 1024x616

FINAL: 10/10

I have yet to find a drama that tops True Beauty for me. It makes me feel better about myself, gives me a pep whenever I watch it, and reminds me that true beauty is within. I love the cast of characters, the OST, the setting. It feels like home and I plan to return again and again to this wonderful drama.

Rose HEAL 1 1024x576

The Rose presents a unique blend of pop-rock, memorable ballads, and unique vocals. HEAL did not disappoint! Here’s my album breakdown.

~: 9/10

I love a good intro. “~” builds a dreamy soundscape that invites listeners into the world The Rose has built in this album. With whimsical harps, imaginative strings, and natural sound effects, this track drew me in immediately. It’s calming yet the music builds with excitement, leading perfectly into “Definition of ugly is.”

Definition of ugly is: 10/10

Coming from “~” into the reverbed acapella vocals from Woosung nearly sent a shiver up my spine. He has such an amazingly unique voice that his singing alone is a powerful opening to this track. The melody of “Definition of ugly is” is exquisite and beautifully crafted. It was immediately favorited by me as soon as the chorus hit. And as the song builds, the vocals only become more powerful. This was the perfect song to introduce the group. The amazing melody, vocals, huge electric guitar solo at the end…honestly, this is why The Rose is so loved!

Childhood: 6/10

This ballad is touching. “Don’t forget when you were a child. Even when time passes, let it stay in your mind. Don’t live your life like you have a thousand years, ready for you to waste your time on regrets.” The vocals and lyrics are the stars in this track. With soft piano and guitar, it allows both to shine. For some, I can imagine this being their favorite track on the album due to the emotional weight that comes with it as well as the lovely vocals and harmonies. For me, however, the melody didn’t stick very well in my mind and thus it isn’t as much of a standout track on HEAL.

Shift: 7/10

Another chill track, “Shift” is a song I can imagine playing on a car ride. I love the unique feel of the chorus and the way the vocals have been processed. The electric guitar has a special role to play in this track and I appreciated the soundscape created by it.

Cure: 5/10

“Cure” has a strong opening. The drum rhythm in this really carries it. However, I feel like the chorus melody was a bit of a disappointment after such a build-up in the intro and verses. It falls flat for me, which is a shame considering the song has so many good elements.

See-saw: 7/10

“See-saw” is an emotional track. With piano, strings, and expressive vocals, it’ll tug on your heartstrings for sure. Check out the lyrics:

Every time I endure, and endure again, I end up tilting

My center is broken again

It’s gonna be okay

Like a see-saw with different ends

I’ll relieve the weight off you

Slowly

What should I do?

Will I understand your frustration?

You’ll be back

The way you used to laugh

It’s gonna be okay

Like a see-saw with different ends

I’ll relieve the weight off you, slowly, little by little

Time: 7/10

“Time” feels sentimental and with lyrics talking about saying goodbye and time healing relationships, it’s another track that will pull at your heart. I like that this one is upbeat, but worry it might get buried by more standout tracks on the album. However, it adds a great middle-of-the-road sound that is necessary between the ballads and tracks like “Shift” and “Definition of ugly is.”

Yes (feat. James Reid): 5/10

I adore the instrumental in this track. The guitar layers and selective beats really make it! It’s what I paid most attention to in “Yes” as the lyrics and vocal melody didn’t feel very unique to me. The collaborative vocals paired well together, but I overall just wish more was done with the song.

Sour: 9/10

“Sour” makes an interesting analogy between a sour taste and a person’s heart after they lose someone. The chorus feels explosive, and this is the type of melody I was waiting to hit in the album since “Definition of ugly is.” It’s memorable, emotive, and reflects the sound that makes The Rose who they are as a group. “My heart’s so sour without you” is going to be the defining melodic line for me from this album.

-: 6.5/10

I appreciate this bookend to HEAL. It includes nature sounds, like those found in “~” but also adds in little snippets of tunes from the album. I can’t tell if the second half of the track includes the sounds of footsteps in the forest or not. It’s not as well-crafted as “~” in my opinion but I appreciate the soundscape nonetheless.

Rose HEAL 2 1024x683

Final: 6.5/10

Fans of The Rose will appreciate HEAL. With plenty of variety in tracks and themes, it’s a great album to use to introduce someone to the group. After waiting 4 years for a full length album, this is not a disappointment! There could have been a few improvements to specific tracks, but overall HEAL is a good album.
