There’s a new K-beauty trend going around, but it has mostly negative comments surrounding it. Korea’s beauty culture isn’t shy about plastic surgery and face-altering measures in order to achieve the desired aesthetic. People travel all over the world to get beauty procedures done here. But has K-beauty gone too far this time?
Pupil enlarging surgeries have officially come into the spotlight, also known as “Eye-ring surgery.” Individuals who desire to have the effects of large pupil contact lenses, but permanently, are opting into this trend. The larger pupil effect isn’t a stranger to the K-pop world, with many stars seen sporting these contacts.
The surgery itself is promoted as “simple.” A circular silicone ring is inserted around the pupil to enlarge it. It doesn’t actually involve the pupil itself, but the surrounding area. One clinic claimed it was developed after seven years of research.

An X user posted about the procedure and it accumulated many comments. Here are some of the popular ones:
“South Korean plastic surgeons doing this need to be removed for crimes against humanity.”
“I would do it!”
“WonYoung already got dibs booking that first appointment.”
“Heck no, that looks like a tattoo on the white of your eye! Wearing a circle lens would be safer than this.”
“That sounds scary.”
Korea’s no newbie when it comes to surgery on the eyes. Epicanthoplasty is popular because it makes the eyes appear more open. It involves removing the epicanthal fold–this is the skin at the eye’s inner corner. Double eyelid surgery is also well-known, as it seems to be the most popular eye procedure.
Does this new pupil surgery fit right in or do you believe that this goes too far? Would you consider having this done?
